What's your favourite UK seaside town?

Looking for somewhere for a traditional seaside holiday.

I'd like a nice, safe, sandy beach.
Water warm enough to swim (or at least wade) in.
A few shops, cafes, fish and chips and ice cream within walking distance.
Don't really want nightlife, arcades etc.
What's your favourite?

Saltburn near Whitby. Wonderful beach, the perfect place for a day out with small children. My idea of heaven. Whitby would be next because they have crazy golf.

wichitalinemanswoman · 03/08/2019 10:38

Whitby and Tenby

ohmysoul · 03/08/2019 10:38

Definitely Tenby.

Tynemouth. Though the North Sea ain’t warm! Can paddle though.

Isatis · 03/08/2019 10:43

St Ives. Five lovely beaches all within walking distance, lots of fish and chips and ice cream, and enough adult things to do to keep parents sane.

piglet81 · 03/08/2019 11:02

Cromer

Blubluboo · 03/08/2019 11:10

Tenby!! It does have an arcade but you can easily avoid it. It also has a good nightlife so again that's not what you wanted. But I think it is everything else you want and it is such a lovely place. Yes of course it will be a bit busy but isn't everywhere in the summer?

tinkerbellsays · 03/08/2019 11:11

Sandown / Shanklin - Isle of Wight

paffuto · 03/08/2019 11:30

Looe, no macdonalds or burgerking. Bliss!!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 03/08/2019 11:33

Swanage, avoid Weymouth if you don’t want the nightlife!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 03/08/2019 11:44

Croyde is nice - we enjoyed it but got fed up with the traffic jams getting in and out.

Currently in Woolacombe - we've hired a beach hut for two weeks ( £118 p/w) and it's been brilliant. The beach gets packed during the day so it's nice to have your own little base where you keep your swim stuff and snacks and drinks etc. Then by 6pm the beach empties and you can stay and eat fish and chips or bbq while watching the sunset. Just don't stay in one of the Woolacombe Bay holiday resorts. Hell on earth and a very expensive mistake.

St Andrews, beautiful beach, sun always seems to shine, it can often be windy but even in rain it's beautiful

pisspants · 03/08/2019 11:51

Swanage has everything OP - quaint, sheltered and a lovely beach.

Kez200 · 03/08/2019 12:07

Looes nice as it has a year round community as well and most small town infrastructure (schools to 16, doctor) although no major supermarket.

Woolacombe and, even more so, Croyde are much quieter out of season and more travel for stuff. Ilfracombe has all that but isnt as nice.

Dowser · 03/08/2019 12:09

Yes I was thinking of swanage
Didn’t seem too crowded on the day we went
