What's your favourite UK seaside town?

Looking for somewhere for a traditional seaside holiday.

I'd like a nice, safe, sandy beach.
Water warm enough to swim (or at least wade) in.
A few shops, cafes, fish and chips and ice cream within walking distance.
Don't really want nightlife, arcades etc.
What's your favourite?

Pretty much anywhere in the Outer Hebrides.

Heading back to Tywyn next Saturday, Converse.
We’re going to a house right by the beach. I can’t wait.
Another mumsnetter booked a holiday there on my recommendation. I hope she likes it.

Barry island is fab

Awks · 03/08/2019 18:06

Been to Saltburn today! It was rammed with families but as always, it's just lovely

Guacamowle · 03/08/2019 18:07

Another vote for Cullen in Moray - gorgeous place

NewName54321 · 03/08/2019 18:10

(Old) Hunstanton.

Looe gets my vote every time. Very busy in the day but in the evening transforms into heaven.

CarafeOfTheFinestWine · 03/08/2019 18:21

Port Erin isle man. Glorious beach, no hassle parking, other stuff to do. Kayak, paddle boards and dinghy. Cute steam trains, walks on the headland. Fab fish and chips. Seals near by.

SweetestThing · 03/08/2019 18:27

Swanage but if you're walking on the Purbeck Way near Studland, beware of naked rambling man....

AngelsWithSilverWings · 03/08/2019 18:28

@Propertyofhood I think we've just been so unlucky! It's very busy this week. Just had the police turn up to the camping field too so maybe there is just a large group of dodgy people here at the moment.

We were allocated a pitch not on the camping field but mixed in with the caravans and motorhomea as we need a hook up and I don't think there are that many with hook ups available on the main field.

Perranporth and padstow. Pretty powerful tides at perranporth, be warned (of course be warned everywhere though!). Fistral is nice.

Woolacombe is good fun but quite bonkers busy.

Wasn't impressed with Tenby!

HairyToity · 03/08/2019 18:29

Tenby and Criccieth

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/08/2019 18:29

Mablethorpe(or a walk to village of Sutton on sea along seafront)

RoseMartha · 03/08/2019 18:30

Woolacombe or Perranporth

PancakeAndKeith · 03/08/2019 18:32

Southwold is lovely. And you can get the foot ferry to and from Walberswick.

bingandflop · 03/08/2019 19:05

Swanage or Shanklin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/08/2019 19:12

Lyme Regis, West Bay and The Hive at Burton Bradstock for breakfast. (I once saw Nick Clegg with his family and Carole Malone there on the same day. We wondered if she was following himGrin)

SummerHouse · 03/08/2019 19:14

I love Whitby. Swam there too but I am hardcore. We always go to Saltburn for a day during a week at Whitby. Heaven!

Medianoche · 03/08/2019 19:24

Southsea has traditional seaside with a crazy amount of other stuff to do all within easy walking distance (pier, castle, natural history museum, model village, D Day Museum, aquarium, pedalo lake, several splash parks). It’s the easiest holiday we’ve ever had. It confuses me that it’s not more popular as a holiday destination.
Shanklin/Sandown also very good. Probably easiest to start with your nearest stretch of coastline and choose from the options there though.

Daphnesmate · 03/08/2019 19:30

Another vote for St Ives.

MrsPworkingmummy · 03/08/2019 19:32

Tynemouth, Warkworth or Bamburgh in Northumberland. X

CraftyGin · 03/08/2019 19:33

Musselburgh

RuffleCrow · 03/08/2019 19:44

Cromer, Norfolk. Exactly the right mix of tradition, natural beauty, peace and quiet and fun stuff to keep the kids happy.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 03/08/2019 19:44

Another vote for Robin Hood's Bay, Tenby tick all your boxes too but is much bigger. Aberdaron or Abersoch are nice too. I guess it depends where you're travelling from.

BestIsWest · 03/08/2019 19:45

Tenby
