So far this morning we've had:

  1. Why Brexit is a great thing.
  2. Why Europe hates us.
  3. Why all social problems are down to "the ethnics".
  4. Why education isn't really that important for girls.
  5. Why Donald Trump actually has a lot of good ideas.

We're here until this time tomorrow. I'll be a quivering wreck by then.

This will blow your mind

Sounds grim, OP! Strong drink and a pillow to scream into? I’m grateful for my dear old, rad’ fem’, leftie, europhile mum (85 soon).

Also PILs are immigrants. I'd forgotten that! They're the right sort though. Apparently

Poor DH got cornered by someone the other day and got ‘lectured’ about immigration etc. This was in the U.K. this guy was from New Zealand. He honestly couldn’t see it.

Come to my house .Hear my elderly Aunt regale me with the life stories of people I don't know, or want to . The stories often go back 3 generations.
Often try to tell her that I am not interested but she just keeps talking.

Ferfeckssake. Ah yes, that’s the frustrating side of my mum! The endless repetitions of the same stuff, every time I see her. The people who died years before I was born but get spoken of as if they just nipped out to the shops. I think maybe as we age some things just get ‘cemented’ - be that reactionary views or memories anchoring us to a sense of who we are/how the world is. Bloody annoying for people listening, of course, and can lead to a feeling of not really being ‘with’ the person in the present.

I wonder if I will be considered a reactionary bigot one day. I'm not having a pop at anyone on this thread at all, and I my father is a climate change denying Trump supporter which is v different to my own views. But my grandchildren may think my views are disgraceful in some way. Maybe I will have story about my childhood best friend that I think is relevant and then I will just have to say it, just have to tell someone about this person who was so important to me, even if I know full well my listener doesn't care.

Or maybe they'll think I'm lovely, who know.
