At what age did you buy your first home?

And did you buy a home before or after kids?
How much ‘help’ did you get or did you raise a deposit alone?
I’m 29, no dc and renting, curiously wondering if I’m one of many or am I unusual!?

Bought a doer upper in 2013 age 24 with my husband for 103k. Sold 4 years later for 180k and now bought our forever home. 3 children

imarocketman50 · 01/08/2019 16:57

Got the keys 2 months before my 21st birthday and bought with then boyfriend. Married 2 years later, still married and still in the same house 18 years later.

Glitterfisher · 01/08/2019 17:27

22 before kids. Saved for small deposit and fees. Now you need a much bigger deposit so definitely wouldn't have got the same sort of house and definitely not as soon.

I'm 39, dh 42, and we have no hope of ever buying! We have help from parents but they don't have enough money to fund a home for us, even if we wanted them to. We live in a lovely housing association house in a reasonably nice area so it's not a massive problem.

LiveandBreathe · 01/08/2019 17:54

Quite depressing how much has changed. I did shared ownership in 2015, aged 35. On 24k. Bought 45% share. Had to put down 45k deposit, 37.5k was gifted.

Now have mortgage on 70% share of the property. I'll never be able to afford it outright, not soon anyway, but I could now afford open market just about. Its tough on your own.

sonjadog · 01/08/2019 17:58

Age 31, bought with 100% mortage, no deposit. A friend tried the same three years later and couldn’t get a bank to give her the money. She is still renting 14 later. I was really lucky I bought when I did.

  1. Bought flat on my own. Parents helped with deposit. Needed 8%
Squiff70 · 01/08/2019 18:48
  1. Parents helped by lending £5k towards the deposit which I paid back over 5 years.
glitteringfishy · 01/08/2019 18:52

35 and stuck renting, probably forever. Forced out of London and will probably be forced out of Bristol next if our landlord ever decides to sell. Depressing, but not a lot we can do about it. Love our rented house and the area we live in but would be so nice to feel safe, especially as DS approaches school age.

mossmurray · 01/08/2019 19:07

21, joint mortgage with DH, 5% deposit but house was only 35k so tiny deposit. We had both just graduated and had a good incomes. This was 1993

Orangecake123 · 01/08/2019 19:23

I'm 27 and still haven't bought yet, but have started a small fund.

No babies and I'm still studying for my second degree.

Mills2976 · 01/08/2019 19:25

19 with a 95% mortgage

Jaz994 · 01/08/2019 19:34

25.. All my own money, saved for 3 years for a 5% deposit and used a help to buy ISA which meant the government added 25% to our savings Smile

Pengweng · 01/08/2019 19:35

Bought first (and current) house in 2012 with DH when i was 27 and he was 30. No dc but i was pregnant at the time. Had 10% deposit to put down (loan from DH's parents). No banks were giving 100% mortgages at the time so we were extremely lucky that we had someone to help us out.

Bumper1969 · 01/08/2019 20:21

36, Shared owner ship, ten years later had 100% mortgage.
No help funded by teaching job and done ten years in London but reasonable rent.

Earned 189 when I sold. Moved out of London now mortgage free.

Bought a 3 bed starter home aged 24 (25 by the time it was finished). Got a loan from DAunt and DPiLs towards deposit (we had the deposit for the 2 bed style - they all felt the 3 bed was far better), which was paid back about 2 months after we took possession.

We lived with concrete floors for 9 months, did a lot of painting and tiling ourselves, slept on a mattress on the floor for 6 months, that sort of thing.

We moved 2.5 years later, taking advantage of a bump in the market and a promotion each, to get the same size house with a smaller garden but far closer to the city, with good local services and near the coast. Which we are still in, 17 years later.

BiddyPop · 05/08/2019 04:27

90% mortgage, and the same when we lived, but even after extending twice, we are just about paid off (less than 6 months to go) 8 years early.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 05/08/2019 04:34

24, 10 years ago. No help, no kids then. Husband has a well paid job though.

Kerjohn · 05/08/2019 05:40

20, bought with partner Smile

Ilovesweatybollocks · 05/08/2019 19:04

I was 22 and back then you could get a 95% mortgage. I bought a one bedroom flat with a garage for £32,000 and I sold it 4 years later for £52,000

Stompythedinosaur · 05/08/2019 19:47

I was 28, and I could only do it as I had money from an inheritance for the deposit.

applesauce1 · 05/08/2019 20:08

I was 25 and my husband was 27. We had a 20% deposit which we'd saved ourselves. Looking to move and buy our forever home now, five years later.
