At what age did you buy your first home?

And did you buy a home before or after kids?
How much ‘help’ did you get or did you raise a deposit alone?
I’m 29, no dc and renting, curiously wondering if I’m one of many or am I unusual!?

I was 33, deposit borrowed from mum. Already had 2 kids.

TwoBlueFish · 31/07/2019 10:22

24, no kids, bought with my ex partner.

cocomelon23 · 31/07/2019 10:23

I was 19. I'm now mid 30s.

TwoBlueFish · 31/07/2019 10:23

Oh and no help from anyone but was 20 years ago!

Nellamelia · 31/07/2019 10:25

27 in 2013 with dp who was 25. No children then.

Family member provided most of deposit (8k) on the understanding that we paid it back when we sold the house, which we did a few years later to go to a bigger house. It was a total refurb job so we were all confident that the resale value would cover the repayment of the deposit as well as leaving enough to put into the next property.

Aged 24. 110% mortgageShock. Made a good profit to put towards larger home 5 years later. Had DC 9 years ago. No desire to ever move again.

shadowloveragain · 31/07/2019 10:26

25 whilst pregnant with my first.

Singleandproud · 31/07/2019 10:26

28, single parent to one DD, my parents used inheritance from sale of my grandparents house to buy my council flat for me (controversial, I know), they bought it cash and I am paying them back.

rubberduckyyouretheone · 31/07/2019 10:28
  1. 10% deposit.
Pineapplefish · 31/07/2019 10:29

28 with my fiancé (now DH)

limesoda · 31/07/2019 10:29

24, 6 months after we got married.

DH used profit from his investments for the deposit. That makes us sound way richer than we are 😂

Millie2013 · 31/07/2019 10:29
  1. DP was 27, in laws paid the deposit (motivated by worrying they’d never get rid of DP Grin)
OakElmAsh · 31/07/2019 10:29

28, with DP (who is now DH), before we got married or had kids. DH had a 20K inheritance from a grandparent that went towards the deposit.

We since sold that place and moved somewhere bigger but much less expensive (moving from very expensive city to very cheap countryside)

Gorganzolabrie · 31/07/2019 10:29

I bought with a friend aged 32. That was back in the early nineties when property was cheap. I first bought on my own when I was 40.

Ellabella989 · 31/07/2019 10:31

House was my DP’s when I moved in but I put 15k towards the mortgage as my share of the deposit and I own 50% of the house now.
I was 30. He was 34. Both of us got 20k each inheritance from grandparents dying so we both used part of that. We probably could have bought without inheritance help though as we have some savings.

KnifeAngel · 31/07/2019 10:32

21 with a 100% mortgage.

ChillyB · 31/07/2019 10:33

35 (this year) with DH saved the deposit ourselves and we each had a lifetime ISA so ended up with a 4K top up on our savings. 1 baby DS he was 6 months when we completed.

notacooldad · 31/07/2019 10:35

First house at 19 with a not a not so DP as it turned out.
A couple of years later at 22 I bought a house by myself. Unbelievably I was working on temporary part time contracts at the time!

Ariela · 31/07/2019 10:36

18, working 3-4 jobs a week (basically all hours to save a 20% deposit). This was 1979. Have rented out rooms, worked 2 jobs etc to stay on the property ladder, pay down mortgage and improve the properties I owned. Sold last 3 bed detached to provide large majority % deposit on current property in 'nice' area. Did not have kids until 1999, so had plenty of time to pay off the mortgage/renovate properties etc. No parental help whatsoever but it was not needed.

notacooldad · 31/07/2019 10:37

Ha! Double 'a not a not'DP! Clearly it wasn't a great relationship!

MrsMoastyToasty · 31/07/2019 10:37

24 - I was working for a high street bank at the time and got a cheap mortgage. Although I was taxed for it in my salary.

yogafailure · 31/07/2019 10:40

I was 26...we'd been married for almost 4 years but had been living in forces married quarters before then. We didn't have dc until I was almost 30 so we only had two dogs when we moved in 😀.

We got a 95% mortgage on our 2bed main door front and back garden organically features flat - which cost us just under £30k. Those were the days!

TheLime · 31/07/2019 10:40

We were 28 and 29, bought a two bed cottage in zone 5 for £365k. Had a 30k deposit lent to us by DHs mum. We paid interest to her every month and have the capital back when we sold. DH was a solicitor 5 years PQE and was on about 75k and I was on about 26k.

TheLime · 31/07/2019 10:41

That was in 2010.

skippy67 · 31/07/2019 10:41

I was 27, no DC, in SE London. I saved the deposit myself. My mum helped by putting the rent I'd been paying her for 7 years into a savings account for me. I had NO idea she was doing that, and obviously it was a huge help.
