At what age did you buy your first home?

And did you buy a home before or after kids?
How much ‘help’ did you get or did you raise a deposit alone?
I’m 29, no dc and renting, curiously wondering if I’m one of many or am I unusual!?

  1. Two years after finishing uni. 100% mortgage. Saved to pay off all non-student loan debt and enough for fees first. Almost No help. Gran bought my Sofas.
BenWillbondsPants · 31/07/2019 19:28

Bought my first flat at 19. Pre kids, no help.

BogglesGoggles · 31/07/2019 19:30

18, bought with DH. Bought a cheap new build. Realised pretty quickly it was a mistake and have sworn off buying until we can buy in cash/very low mortgage.

Sewrainbow · 31/07/2019 19:32

26 with dp, no help and no kids

Ginandgingers92 · 31/07/2019 19:33

Bought my first at 24, 3 years ago, just moved into our second place :)

Auntpetunia2015 · 31/07/2019 19:33

I was 23 exDh was 28 way back in 1991 when deposits were minimal and the interest rate astronomical!

bigpawsnopaws · 31/07/2019 19:35

19, the interest rates were 15% at the time
Had a 100% mortgage.

ReginaGeorgeous · 31/07/2019 19:38

24, nine years ago.

Bought a new build and 25% of our deposit was given to us by the builders as an incentive. My dad gave me £2,500, DH and I saved the rest.

Marinetta · 31/07/2019 19:40

I was 25, bought last year with a deposit I had saved myself while working. Didn't have kids at the time but was trying to concieve and by the time I moved in I was a few weeks pregnant.

SalrycLuxx · 31/07/2019 19:40
  1. Saved up the deposit with DH. Paid off the mortgage 9.5 years later. Had kids while we had the mortgage.
Fizzytonicplease · 31/07/2019 19:46

Currently in the process of buying my first home, I'm 37!

cookieoclock · 31/07/2019 19:46

23, pre children, no help.

Longdistance · 31/07/2019 19:46

I was 25 and bought on my own house on my own with my own money. Met dh when I was 30, he had his own house. Sold mine for silly money, invested in dh’s. Mortgage nearly paid off now. Though we lived in Oz for a few years and extended our house, we’ll be moving soon to a better town.

Beautiful3 · 31/07/2019 19:55

Aged 24, 14 years ago. No help. Just my husband and I. We got a fixer upper, sold it on after 5 years. We made enough profit for a bigger home in a good area.

DENMAN03 · 31/07/2019 19:58

I was 21. Bought a 3 bed flat with my sister in 2001. Mortgage rates were very high and I used to work 7 days a week in three jobs to pay for it. No help from family but only needed a £2,500 deposit back then ... but I only earned £8k a year so it was a lot for us.

DENMAN03 · 31/07/2019 19:58

1991!! Not 2001!

QueenOfTheKibble · 31/07/2019 19:58

23 with a 90% mortgage (early 90s). I turned down the opportunity to buy the tiny flat I was renting at the time, which was in a fab area, which was only a bit more expensive than the house I bought in a crap area. I have done OK on the property ladder, but if I had sucked up the space issue at the time and bought the tiny flat, I would have made a fortune! Still, at least I didn't end up killing OH with an item of the sports equipment that took up most of the floor space of the tiny flat Grin

ToTheLetter · 31/07/2019 19:58

We bought 2 years ago, I was 23, dp was 26. We had a 4yr old and I was pregnant with dc2. We saved a deposit ourselves, a shed load of overtime came up which do took so we saved all of that money and cut back on what we were spending. We were also renting at the time.

Pebbles16 · 31/07/2019 20:08
  1. DH was 21. We saved £5k for deposit. Central London. 1996! We were Lucky at the time
huggybear · 31/07/2019 20:33

23 and £5k I think which was very kind but represented a very small percentage of the deposit.

huggybear · 31/07/2019 20:35

No children.

autumnleaves15 · 31/07/2019 20:39

We bought this year aged 29, no children, 25% deposit all from savings over the past 4 years. No help from parents.

MillicentMartha · 31/07/2019 21:02

22, on my own, 95% mortgage of £24k which was 3x my salary of £8k. No help from parents but it was 1988. It was a tiny, basic 2 bed starter home. Took out an endowment mortgage which only paid off £16k in 2013, but I’d moved twice since then and changed to a repayment and kept the endowment going as a savings plan, slightly better return than a savings account.

MillicentMartha · 31/07/2019 21:04

Oh yes, and my monthly repayments on a £24k mortgage were over £250 which was around half my take home pay.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 31/07/2019 21:07

21, saved a £5k deposit on a £65k house with my fiance (24yrs) whilst we were still at home. The house is worth double now though despite being in a rough area.
