At what age did you buy your first home?

And did you buy a home before or after kids?
How much ‘help’ did you get or did you raise a deposit alone?
I’m 29, no dc and renting, curiously wondering if I’m one of many or am I unusual!?

Age 28 and single, £5k deposit from my mum

ncweds · 31/07/2019 21:28

Just bought our first house and are currently renovating!

I'm 22 and DP is 25, we have no children.
I've worked since 16 and between college and uni managed to save well, my graduate job gave us the final boost.

My parents contributed £4K as my 'living inheritance' - a lovely but kind of morbid gesture. Very much appreciated either way😂

DP contributed about 3k.

22, 90% mortgage, no help

StylishMummy · 31/07/2019 21:54

20 with £35k deposit from inheritance- 3 bed semi, now houses me, DH, 2 DDs & 🐰

oopsididitagain1 · 31/07/2019 22:01

29, pre kids, no help from family, but did take advantage of the help to buy scheme which really helped us!

turtlewax · 31/07/2019 23:20

Bought a flat with DH aged 33 in 2012. London area, so expensive for a FTB. No help from family, and DH paid pretty much the whole deposit as he'd saved loads since getting his first job after graduating. All of that deposit was from his earnings, no inheritance or windfalls. I'd been on a much lower income and not able to save much.

GeneandFred · 31/07/2019 23:55

Liverpool suburbs, 31, we got 5 grand off his parents and rest of deposit was both mine and dh savings. New build house but didn't qualify for help to buy so put 25% down. No kids, not planning.

bluetongue · 01/08/2019 11:09

I didn’t buy until I was 38. Houses are VERY expensive here in Australia.

Paid about a 18% deposit of $80,000 plus stamp duty and other costs. Only possible due to help from my parents as I was buying on my own and not on a huge salary.

ohcanada · 01/08/2019 11:56

I feel you @bluetongue, where i live you need at least a 40% deposit plus an extra 10% for tax! It's so so difficult to get on the property ladder. Most people are just waiting to inherit, even those with great jobs.

Grumpasaurus · 01/08/2019 11:58

35- one DS, live in London, DH and I both middle earners so deposit was gifted and mortgage is ours!

galvantula · 01/08/2019 11:59

19! Was cheaper than renting in mid 90s.

buttertoasty · 01/08/2019 15:08

23, was 3 years ago

echt · 01/08/2019 15:18

A one-bedroom flat in London at 31. This was in the mid-80s and I was the last of my circle of friends to buy without assistance. No-one I knew bought in their 20s, all graduates in decent jobs. But then renting was less of the problem it is now.

Starlight2004 · 01/08/2019 15:39

I was 20, We had 1 ds who was just months old. No help needed at house prices were really low back then and 100% mortgages were still available. We would really struggle now if we hadn't got on the ladder back then.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2019 15:44

I'm one of the generation that apparently had it easy. I was 32, interest rates were astronomical and I had to move 200 miles to a cheaper area and budgeted every penny.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2019 15:46

That was in 1987.

MsMarvellous · 01/08/2019 15:47

I bought my first flat when I was 23/24. My mum gifted me a deposit. DH and I now own our family home and kept his flat which we rent out and sold mine to get the deposit.

FookMeFookYou · 01/08/2019 15:49

Certainly not unusual. I was 35 and husband 38 and that was only because someone died and I inherited enough for a decent deposit so we could afford the repayments. Otherwise we'd still be up shit creek without a paddle.

FookMeFookYou · 01/08/2019 15:51

Oh and we had to move 60 miles out of London to afford the house we wanted (3 bed semi) with a large garden. Left everything behind, friends, jobs etc.

Still hoping it'll be worth it 😬

clottedcreamoverjam · 01/08/2019 16:07

I think the answers are not very relevant without knowing when people bought them.
Buying one in the 1970s is very different to buying one in 2019

Totallybamboozled · 01/08/2019 16:16

I'll be 30 by the time I have £8k saved which will be enough for a 5% deposit for a decent 2 bed house in my area. I've been saving alongside renting.

TheRedBarrows · 01/08/2019 16:23

No kids, single, a tiny one-bedroom flat with huge windows.
My uncle bequeathed me £5k for a deposit.

dinkystinky · 01/08/2019 16:33

23 - pre kids

fernsfordays · 01/08/2019 16:37

24 on my own. Well my dad lent me 8k for the down payment but I replayed it back to him within a year.

dinkystinky · 01/08/2019 16:41

Bought a 2 bed flat in dodgy area in Shoreditch - helped out on deposit by parents and had to have my dad as guarantor....
