At what age did you buy your first home?

And did you buy a home before or after kids?
How much ‘help’ did you get or did you raise a deposit alone?
I’m 29, no dc and renting, curiously wondering if I’m one of many or am I unusual!?

45 but for 10 years prior to that I lived in DC's home.

21 I had my first mortgage. No help. Didnt need depsits back then

Justmuddlingalong · 31/07/2019 10:08
  1. Back in the 100% mortgage days.
dudsville · 31/07/2019 10:08

I was 27, pre kids, and we were helped by family who gave us a third of the cost of the home thereby reducing our mortgage to something reasonable. That was a long time ago and I benefitted massively from the hike in housing prices. I feel for people now. I make a good wage but wouldn't be able to get into the same quality of property I have now if I was starting from scratch.

I was 24 bought 10 years ago with my husband. We both couldn't have got a house without a both our incomes working full time and with no dc. One of us had an inheritance & we both had savings. We were in the south east, UK.

I think it is unusual to buy young now. Lots of work colleagues my age haven't bought or bought in the last 5 years as a couple (no kids again)

hsegfiugseskufh · 31/07/2019 10:10
  1. bought jointly with dp. no help at all (this was 2014)
madeofstarlight · 31/07/2019 10:10

I bought mine last year, i was 24. My parents gifted me my deposit. I've got no children and live on my own.

Bluntness100 · 31/07/2019 10:11

23, pre child. I suspect having kids is what makes it difficult to get onto the property ladder as kids are expensive, particularly due to childcare. Unless finances are very good, then it's normally best to try and buy before hand.

WednesdaySpinner · 31/07/2019 10:12

31, prior to that I lived in DP’s home for 5 years.

qj17 · 31/07/2019 10:12

23 before kids and we saved all our money ourselves for the deposit.

WednesdaySpinner · 31/07/2019 10:12

I raised my own deposit from savings, his deposit came from selling his house and we have no children.

Penners99 · 31/07/2019 10:12

I was 34

Aria2015 · 31/07/2019 10:13

23 in the 100% mortgage days.

anonymouse · 31/07/2019 10:13

27 joint with DH. No DC at the time. We raised the deposit ourselves. My Dsis did it alone aged 29 through shared ownership. 2 years later she bought them out. Rent and mortgage was still far lower than private rent which meant she could save quite quickly.
For us first time was relatively easy, its upsizing that is tricky as there's such a jump from 3 to 4 bed and we have DC now.

Chilledout11 · 31/07/2019 10:13
  1. I took out a car loan for the deposit of 5000. Twenty years ago.
Penners99 · 31/07/2019 10:13

I funded the purchase myself

lanbro · 31/07/2019 10:14

24, no deposit 100% interest only mortgage.

Mintypea5 · 31/07/2019 10:15

26 (single mother to 1 DC). Moved away from where we rented / worked As it was too expensive to a cheaper town still within commute distance. Deposit was funded by inheritance from my dad.

Charm23 · 31/07/2019 10:16

My DH bought his first home in 2013 aged 25 having saved up for the deposit himself. Sold it and made enough profit for a deposit for a family size house which we bought last year ages 28/29.

gubbsywubbsy · 31/07/2019 10:17

23 with no help ... we got a cashback mortgage and used that for the deposit .. lovely loophole that isn't allowed these days

TravellingSpoon · 31/07/2019 10:18

Just me and DS1. I worked full time and had a small deposit from an inheritance. (£3000). House was £34k and I bloody loved it. This was in the early 2000's

MsRinky · 31/07/2019 10:18

28, no help, but houses were much cheaper in 2001, so only needed £5k for the deposit.

Enb76 · 31/07/2019 10:18

28, before having children. Ex local flat in Central London, 50% deposit off a large work bonus in 2005.

Kenworthington · 31/07/2019 10:21
  1. Ds1 was 18 months. Deposit of £2.5k ! Leads than two years later the prices rocketed. We were very very lucky to buy when we did
