At what age did you buy your first home?

And did you buy a home before or after kids?
How much ‘help’ did you get or did you raise a deposit alone?
I’m 29, no dc and renting, curiously wondering if I’m one of many or am I unusual!?

22 when DH and I got sick of renting. Still in the same house, about 7 years left on the mortgage but hope to pay it off in next four.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 15:09

Mid 30s

LBOCS2 · 31/07/2019 15:10

26, with DH, the deposit was an inheritance from my late grandmother. Found out I was pregnant with DD1 between exchange and completion... 😁

JesusHRooseveltChrist · 31/07/2019 15:15

Late 20s, bought with DP in late 2018.
No help from family as such, but lived rent free with parents to save deposit. Took us just over 2 years of hard saving and frugal spending to get 5% deposit together.

bengalcat · 31/07/2019 15:18

Age 32 - sole owner . Put down a 5% deposit . Had kid 5 yrs later .

MadamePompadour · 31/07/2019 15:19

21yo. 1997. On my own. Was earning 10k a year in a junior admin role. House cost 32k.

Best decision I ever made.

DramaAlpaca · 31/07/2019 15:20

I was 24, DH was 26, we had no DC then. Our deposit was a much appreciate gift from my parents to help us on the property ladder. This was the late 80s. The mortgage will finally be paid off, after a few house moves, next year. I hope we'll be able to help our DC with deposits when the time comes for them to want to buy.

hoolahoolahoop · 31/07/2019 15:23

26 no help at all but was bought with DP. This was 4 years ago and pre kids!

AwkwardPaws27 · 31/07/2019 15:24

25 (5 years ago), 9k deposit (plus about £1.5k legal fees) & a 94% mortgage on a one bedroom flat.
My dad very kindly gave me £3k towards my deposit, I had saved £7.5k over two years by living in a house-share.
I had planned to buy a shared ownership place alone, but DP (now DH) & I decided to buy together. I paid all the deposit, but I couldn't get that big a mortgage without a second income. It worked well for us, we sold the flat and bought a house after three years.

Oliversmumsarmy · 31/07/2019 15:25

18 with DP. Place was very very cheap but needed loads of work but then we never moved in because dp moved jobs to London so we sold up. Bought again at 21after a year of working multiple jobs

gabsdot45 · 31/07/2019 15:28

I was 26, DH was 24 we'd been married for a little over a year. No kids at the time. We bought our house through the Shared ownership scheme with the council. We owned part and rented part from the council. We only needed £1000 deposit.

About 2 years later we remortgaged and bought out the council so we owned the house fully ourselves.
We've been in our house for 23 years. We've remortgaged twice for an extension and a new business.
We have about 9 years left to pay and have a very cheap tracker mortgage. Last year we only paid £500 interest.

currentlyoutoftheoffice · 31/07/2019 15:32

24, 95% mortgage on a £85,000 house. My parents gave me most of the deposit.

JollyAndBright · 31/07/2019 15:34

23 - bought with DP, our DS was a toddler at the time.
No help, we both worked FT and saved for the deposit ourselves.

We moved to a bigger house a few years later and are now mid 30’s and mortgage free, although we are considering moving to a bigger house and taking out a small mortgage in the next few years.
(We paid off our mortgage with a settlement after a car accident)

LimitIsUp · 31/07/2019 15:39

29, bought on my own. Was worth £100,000 and was in Winkfield Row near Ascot - back in 1997

Struggled a wee bit with the mortgage and had to get a lodger

Panda761 · 31/07/2019 15:40

23 with my now DH. We saved for our deposit for 2 years after finishing uni and bought it together without help from anyone else. We stretched ourselves at the time to get a property we could stay in and still love it now we have our DC

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/07/2019 15:41

I'm almost 29 and a single mum renting. No hope of buying as I can't afford to. Grin

icebearforpresident · 31/07/2019 15:52

Bought at 21 with my now husband, who was 22. We got the keys the day before I graduated from uni. I inherited some money when my dad died and my husbands grandparents gave him what would have been his inheritance early as they wanted to see him enjoy it (though they both fell into poor health not long after and were never well enough to come see the flat). In total we had about a 50% deposit as we were buying in a lower than average value area. Northern Rock, who we got our mortgage from, went tits up before we even made the first payment.

Wearenotyourkind · 31/07/2019 15:52

I was 32 and H was 37. It took years to save for the deposit. Finally did it last year.

LoopyLu2019 · 31/07/2019 15:53

23, last year. Shared ownership in SE. Deposit was 30% childhood savings (yep those £20 notes from relatives), 20% money left over from university internships, 40% 1 year of me and dp saving hard (whilst renting in the SE) and a 10% top up from my parents to buy 6 months earlier than our estimate. Own 50% of the house. Full price would have been just shy of 400k!! Still I mortgage + rent is less than private rent in our area. We also stretched to a 3 bed semi so that if anything happens to mean we can't afford to sell (house price crash, No salary growth etc ) we can afford it, and it is suitable for when we have dc's and be able to buy the other half.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 31/07/2019 15:54

23, after getting married at 22. We then spent 3 years renovating the old hovel cottage we'd bought before DS1 arrived when I was 26.

GiggleMcDimples · 31/07/2019 15:55
  1. I'd just turned 23, DH was 22, we had a 100% mortgage.
Elmo230885 · 31/07/2019 15:55

22 and it was around 11 years ago. No children and bought alone. Saved up the deposit by moving home with parents for 6 months following renting with friends for 3 years. I currently rent out that home and have a second property mortgaged with my husband and two children.

mrsm12 · 31/07/2019 15:56

27, 1 dc, deposit from sale of dh house and my parents helped with fees.

thaegumathteth · 31/07/2019 16:05

I was 23 but only because dh had a wellish paying job and was 27, he’d bought a flat at 24 and by pure luck made a lot of profit on it which funded our family home.

Gingerivy · 31/07/2019 16:07

23, 1dc, single parent. No help with deposit, but my parents helped with some of the DIY in the house after the purchase. That was many years ago, and I've moved numerous times since then and now am renting. Couldn't afford to buy a house now (am in London).
