How did your waters go?

Dd1 was born in her waters and it occurs to me that I don't actually know how it happens otherwise.

In TV / films it sometimes gushes out like a huge puddle unexpectedly, but I've never heard a story of that happening in real life. Does it happen? Are people kind about it if it happens in public? How does it get cleaned up?

How did your waters go? Should I start carrying a big towel around with me in case?

Had mine broken in hospital with all three of mine.

53rdWay · 28/07/2019 21:28

DC1, hind(?) waters went after about six hours of contractions, then midwife broke the main waters in hospital.

DC2 I had one of those unrealistic TV-style births Grin Waters breaking with a huge gush with no warning, then contractions starting right after and going straight to really intense.

The really gross thing was that because they carried on trickling and I was at home essentially going mad and throwing myself around the place during transition (again, midwives wouldn't believe me, told me repeatedly over the phone to take a paracetamol and not 'waste my time' by coming in and told me off when I did come in because 'it's shift change now'), when we got home with DS the next day we realised that there was amniotic fluid kind of everywhere... Envy Given I was a few hours post partum that was all DH's job to deal with, lucky him!

Shortly before DS was born. I think he was crowning when they finally burst. It's all a bit of a blur, but I remember being at the pushing stage and the midwife told me she could see my waters.

Celebelly · 28/07/2019 21:32

Dramatically on the sofa in DP's man cave. There was a small pop and then my waters just gushed out. It was such a weird feeling. I shrieked and jumped up and it was just pouring out. I just started crying, not sure why, shock I suppose, while DP ran to get a towel and the poor dog looked petrified Grin

PhantomErik · 28/07/2019 21:34

1st - went when midwife examined me, I was already in labour

2nd - In the bath, slow trickle that I couldn't stop with clenching. Was already in labour.

3rd - In bed, it woke me up, sounded like a pop. Managed to waddle to the loo, no gush just a steady trickle/flow. Labour started about an hour later.

SallyLovesCheese · 28/07/2019 21:39

I had a period-type bleed so went to the MAU in a panic and they tested and then told me my waters had broken too. No gush at that time.

The next day I was induced and I gushed loads of water three times before and during my epidural. The midwife said she hadn't many births with so much!

troppibambini · 28/07/2019 21:44

1st the broke them when I was about 8cms
2nd I was induced and had polyhydramnios and the doctor broke them water poured off the bed and into his crocs he had to go and change themBlush
3rd another induction broken my doctor but much less dramatic
4th they went when I was about 5cms massive pressure then a small gush was only my hind waters though the rest went when midwife examined me at about 9cms.

Goneback2school · 28/07/2019 21:44

It was the start of everything for me, sitting on the couch helping Ds1 with homework and felt the pop and gush. It trickled substantially so I was stuck on the loo for a while while the contractions started. In the shower they ramped up quite quickly. I sat on towels for the 45 minute drive to the hospital and ds2 was born 6 hours from first gush.

TowerRingInferno · 28/07/2019 21:50

Had to have them broken for me in hospital both times

Shelbybear · 28/07/2019 21:51

When the midwife broke them when I was getting induced. A lot of liquid came out then I stood up and it kept coming at a slower pace, gross!

My poor mum had the enormous gush of water when in a supermarket when she was having me. In the good old 80's they had no customer toilets and wouldn't let her use the staff ones to try n clean herself up. Very nice of them! She also had my sister with her who was only 2 and saying mummy Uve peed urself 😂

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 28/07/2019 22:06

During transition when I was in that panicky "I can't do this, I can't do this, I don't want a baby, I want to go home and forget this whole idea" really weirded out stage. Thought I'd wet myself and was apologising to very young, seemed quite inexperienced midwife but she was telling me it was my waters. I was off my head with pain and literally couldn't hear her so kept saying sorry (and lots more I can't do this). She went and got someone else Grin
(I did do it btw, DS was fine!)

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 28/07/2019 22:10

I was in the bath at home! I was trying to get some relief from my early labour pains. I actually watched it happen and was surprised at the force of the gush 😳.

absofuckinglutley · 28/07/2019 22:23

First with a giant pop that woke me up at 4.30am......bit of a trickle, got up had a wee and got back in bed then a giant gush. 2nd time with a midwife and a massive knitting needle type thing......which she didn't even do properly and they went an hour later all over labour room floor. Much prefer the first way!

nandaandm · 28/07/2019 22:33

DS - I was in the bath in the hospital, a big whoosh
DD - has booked into hospital as I'd been in labour all day, we were waiting for the midwife to come and examine me. My DP was making me laugh , and I was laughing so much my waters went. It was a fair amount.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 28/07/2019 22:33

Ds1 broke in bed, gushed on the carpet and had to stand in the bath for ages. No labour for 36hours so had to be induced.

Ds2 had to be broken for me in hospital when being induced.

notso · 28/07/2019 22:40

DC1 with a tiny popping sensation and a little trickle of water.

DC2 broke during labour.

DC3, in bed at around 4 in the morning and was woken by a loud squelchy pop. Was polyhydramneous and leaked through all my maternity pads, clean pyjamas and knickers. The relief from the pressure of all the fluid was immense though, I could breathe properly.

DC4 exactly the same as DC3 except I wasn't polyhydramneous so managed to keep some pads and pj's for after the birth!

BillyAndTheSillies · 28/07/2019 22:41

What I know now were my hind waters broke on my due date as I walked to the toilet. Impressed I got to the bathroom to the tiled floor as we'd had new carpet put down the week before.

They continued to leak all day and I was booked in for an induction because no sign of labour.

When I arrived, the midwife said I could pop my bags down in the room and then go down for a coffee as it might be a while before the consultants came around to do the pessary, cue massive movie style flooding of the lift as my actual waters went. Wasn't expecting that! 28 hours later DS arrived.

Letthemysterybe · 28/07/2019 22:42

Mine went very late in labour, there was a big pop noise, it made my husband and the midwife jump!

Munder · 28/07/2019 22:44

Went to the loo for a pee when I woke up early one morning.

When peeing commenced it went on for a long time before I realised it wasn't pee Grin

emwithme · 28/07/2019 22:47

It was 3.40 am, Monday morning, DH working a night shift. I was due to be induced on the Thursday. I went for a wee, stood up to flush, turned to wash my hands and pop all over the bathroom floor.

Went to get checked out but nothing happened. They moved the induction up to the following day and it took a further day and a bit for DD to make an entrance. In the end it was 60 hours 20 minutes between waters going and birth but officially I was in labour for less than 4 hours.

Almostfifty · 28/07/2019 22:56

Mine were broken for me at the hospital all four times. I do wonder if they'd all have been born in the caul otherwise.

Spaghetticarbanana · 29/07/2019 14:49

dc4 waters broke like niagra falls at 2am.
I'll never forget the thud of the totally full size 5 nappy I had in my knickers hitting the floor when we arrived at hospital when a doubtful midwife asked to see my pad to check if my waters had actually gone.
Everyone told me waters didnt go like the films and my dc4 was the only time my waters broke without help. They had said I didn't have polyhydramnios this time but it was pouring out for hours.
Dc4 was transverse though, so there was no head to block the water I guess.

SeaEagle21 · 29/07/2019 14:53

Mine were broken by the doctor - they gushed out like a fountain, straight into his expensive leather loafers. Whoops !

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/07/2019 17:30

Mine went in bed, I’d just been to the loo and when I got back I felt a big gush and thought I’d weed myself Blush Then it kept coming and I knew what was happening so called the unit for advice. My little girl was 2 weeks early.
