How did your waters go?

Dd1 was born in her waters and it occurs to me that I don't actually know how it happens otherwise.

In TV / films it sometimes gushes out like a huge puddle unexpectedly, but I've never heard a story of that happening in real life. Does it happen? Are people kind about it if it happens in public? How does it get cleaned up?

How did your waters go? Should I start carrying a big towel around with me in case?

I was watching Sherlock and thought I'd wet myself! Just trickled out - but then trickled on and on. That was my first sign of labour. DD was born 2 hours later. That was intense!

Instagran · 28/07/2019 19:55

Mine went at about 5am as I was getting back into bed after going to the loo. The carpet was very wet! We went to the hospital who confirmed my waters had gone and sent us home. I then spent the next three days walking around constantly leaking until I was induced three days later!

HippyChickMama · 28/07/2019 19:56

I had polyhydraminos with first dc, was induced so was on antenatal ward, waters went about 18 hours after contractions started and flooded the floor of the 2 bedded bay. I was practically paddling in it and the midwife had to run for a mop and bucket, every contraction after that there was more trickling out. Second dc was much less dramatic, I asked the midwife if she could break my waters at 10cm just before I started pushing to relieve some of the pressure. She barely touched me and they went but it was just a trickle, like having a wee rather than a gush.

With dc one I was having some twinges and was sat on my big ball, I went to stand up and whoosh - it was like a water balloon bursting!

With dc 2 I was in the hospital on bed rest due to high bp. I was just trying to go off to sleep, went to move and whoosh - flooded the bed!

With both dc my waters went on my due date.

Skyejuly · 28/07/2019 19:58

1st 2nd and 3rd was all broken by midwife just before pushing. 4th broke naturally and were quite a gush.

MeadowHay · 28/07/2019 19:58

Mine didn't go until I was fully dilated and suddenly got the urge to start pushing after they went. So I was on the labour ward (where I had been for hours) laying on a bed dozing. The midwife said afterwards that she was glad they went then as otherwise she was going to suggest she break them.

MeadowHay · 28/07/2019 19:59

Oh also it did gush out everywhere out of the blue!! I think I yelped as I was half asleep and suddenly soaked so I got a shock! Haha

BigMamaFratelli · 28/07/2019 20:01

No idea with dd1

With a bang all over the midwife when I was starting to push with dd2Blush

Queenofmyownheart · 28/07/2019 20:02

With DD1 I had them broken and because I was numb due to the epidural I've no idea what it felt like.

DD2 had them broken again 😂 felt like a sort of random warmness between the legs, I gather it was quite a gush though from the midwifes reaction 😂 The smell though was kinda like diluted bleach?

Silversun83 · 28/07/2019 20:03

Mine were broken for me after two days of labour in an attempt to get things moving quicker (it didn't work Hmm).

From what I remember it was a trickle to start with, but then literally every time I stood up or had a contraction for ages afterwards, I would get a huge gush. Even the midwives were shocked at how much fluid was coming out of me! Grin

LER83 · 28/07/2019 20:04

I had to have mine broken with all 3 dc's. All when I was about 7cms. With my dd there was a pop and I literally felt her fall down, waters must have been stopping her coming, she was born about 10 mins later. With my 3rd I had polyhydramnios, that was a flood!

DramaAlpaca · 28/07/2019 20:04

I also soaked the midwife with DC2, just as she bent down to examine me Blush

Myshoesarenew · 28/07/2019 20:04

Two spontaneous ruptures here! DC1 I was at home on my own one Saturday evening (DH had just popped out for a few minutes). I was sat on the sofa and heard/felt a pop and a gush. I leapt up and dashed out into the hallway where I clung to the bannister waiting for DH to return home and trying not to slip over.

DC2 I was chatting to a friend in the car park of a local supermarket on my due date. I had just been for a nice lunch with DH and was just popping out for some milk. I was busy saying that there was no sign of baby and I guess it would probably be another couple of weeks when whoosh, there they went!

Silversun83 · 28/07/2019 20:05

I think I read somewhere that your waters going before you start having contractions was quite rare, possibly around 15 percent?

PlinkPlink · 28/07/2019 20:07

Mine went at 10cm and exploded over the poor nurses Blush was quite spectacular.

DS born with one push.

Placenta delivery was equally explosive.

ParkheadParadise · 28/07/2019 20:07

Dd1 broken by the midwife

Dd2 water's broke in the car park of my mum's care home. DH and my sister were with me. DH's trainers were soaked. Dd2 was born 40mins later having just made it to the hospital.

thesuninsagittarius · 28/07/2019 20:08

The first time I was in labour, around 4-5 cm, I'd been lying on the bed and got up on my knees because I felt sick. I was retching into one of those cardboard bowls they give you, there was an audible pop that I felt as well as heard and I was kneeling in what felt like gallons of warm water! The second time, also in labour, about 7-8cms, I was sitting upright against pillows, out of it on gas and air; again an audible pop and whoosh! ExH said it was like watching the tide come in, he may have said 'surf's up!' Third time waters were broken by very rude, heavy handed doctor while 'labour wasn't progressing.' DD2 had got herself into a weird position inside me and was eventually delivered via emergency CS.

BobTheFishermansWife · 28/07/2019 20:08

Midwife broke mine as he came out as he was tearing me front and back, otherwise he'd have been born in them, it was a gush onto the delivery suite bed.

Warmhandscoldheart · 28/07/2019 20:10

Midwife did it to help progress my labour because DC's heartbeat was erratic. Out gushed a mixture of water and baby poo, gross 🙈
All hell let loose and DC was delivered safely by ECS within a short space of time

PixieLumos · 28/07/2019 20:13

I was asleep and it woke me up - I felt a ‘pop’ (and was sure I heard it too!).

Rainbowknickers · 28/07/2019 20:22

1-in the middle of the night
2-midwife broke them
3-3 seconds before he was born
4-at home sitting in the sofa
5-midwife went to break them-just as they went
6-stood up at home and they just gushed out-I was stood in a massive puddle

BitOfAKerfuffle · 28/07/2019 20:23

DC1 they broke movie style but luckily I was in the hospital standing in the ensuite of the birthing room awaiting the pool being filled and there was a massive pop and splash and the midwife who had just came on shift and had just came in to introduce herself to me but hadn't yet got the words out got soaked !
DC2 they were broken by midwife and there was just a tiny little trickle she wasn't even convinced she had got them broken there was that little came away

GinUnicorn · 28/07/2019 20:24

I went for a lie down on the lovely freshly changed bed and then whoosh with no warning water everywhere.

Luckily I felt well enough to put them on the wash and put the spares on the bed especially as a few hours later I vomited all over the bed!

sourgrapes1 · 28/07/2019 20:24

Something woke me so I went for a wee, came back to bed and thought I was still peeing until I realised it was my waters! It was a shock at 36 week with no other signs of labour. DS came 5 hours later!

Thesearmsofmine · 28/07/2019 20:26

With ds1 mine went with a huge gush like you see on TV. I was in bed, turned over and boom they went.
