How did your waters go?

Dd1 was born in her waters and it occurs to me that I don't actually know how it happens otherwise.

In TV / films it sometimes gushes out like a huge puddle unexpectedly, but I've never heard a story of that happening in real life. Does it happen? Are people kind about it if it happens in public? How does it get cleaned up?

How did your waters go? Should I start carrying a big towel around with me in case?

I had the typical trickle then gush and contractions started pretty much straight after (at home after a long walk to asda and back) if you feel more comfortable taking a towel with you when you're out and about then do so, although they do say if you're in a supermarket you get free nappies if your waters break whilst shopping Haha!

Well I for one am glad we don’t idolise the rich here, especially not those who live high on the taxpayer funds.

For those saying she’s not extravagant, and Harry has his own money from Diana inheritance (20 million pounds), where do you think Diana’s money came from? She didn’t have 20 million of her own.

Nearly all Diana’s wealth came from 1) the British taxpayer via Charles whilst she was married to him 2) her divorce settlement from Prince Charles ( public funds once again!).

Mine went in the toilet on the ward when I was just being admitted at 8cm. Second time around they went all over the floor and my shoes as I wasn't admitted fast enough!

DC1 in the pub having a Sunday roast with ALL the in-laws. Luckily more of a trickle than a gush.

DC2 in bed in the middle of the night. Disappointingly, no exciting pop.

With my second baby, a week or so before my due date my friend came down to visit before the baby arrived. We spent the day walking around town doing touristy things (I lived in a tourist town at the time) and that evening we’d just made dinner, I crouched down to get the plates out of the cupboard and my waters gushed. I hadn’t expected there to be so much or for it to be so hot. My friend panicked so my ex sent her off to get snacks for the midwives (planned home birth) and called the midwife. I went into full labour immediately and dd was born half hour later. The midwife arrived as her head was crowning and my friend got back after she was born!

1st - popped on the couch thought I had wet myself
2nd - MW popped them
3rd - popped in the night in bed baby 45 mins later
4th - MW popped then baby born 4mins later

Wow what a great thread

I’m 38+5 with dc2. Dd was induced by this point so I don’t know what going into natural labour feels like. I’ve heard that once your waters go it can be up to 24hrs before anything happens, is that true?

It would be very convenient if baby decided to come this weekend 😆🤞🏻

I was lying on the hospital bed after the midwife had declared me 8cm dilated. I just sat up a bit, felt a lot of pressure, and the water just exploded out, going quite a way off the end of the bed. It was quite dramatic. Not what I had been expecting at all, I'd been in labour 14 hours before they broke, I thought your waters broke then contractions started.

NoWordForFluffy · 31/07/2019 10:23

I think the stats are that only 5% of labours start with waters breaking. And only 5% on the due date. DD was both (though it was our due date which we were certain of, not the one given by scan!).

After two days of slow contractions I was at the hospital to be checked. They decided I should stay but were just getting the delivery room ready...so in the middle of the hospital Costa Coffee on their fabric chairs my waters gushed, all over the floor, all over the chair and soaked in.

My DH just calmly got a wheelchair and whisked me off to the delivery room

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 31/07/2019 11:20

First time mine popped whilst I was alone with a huge pile of bags and coats in the hospital foyer. I had been in early labour for about 12 hours, examined and sent home until waters broke or contractions progressed. We decided to hang around at the hospital as it was a faff to get a taxi home. DH disappeared to find some sandwiches or something as we hadn't eaten and pop, there they went! I left a puddle in the waiting area! Receptionist could see my panicked look and offered to watch the bags while I used the staff toilet, DH aged about ten years when he returned and I was gone! Back up to labour ward and baby was born about an hour later! Good job we didn't go home!

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 31/07/2019 11:22

Second time I was in active labour, almost ready to push, on all fours high up on a bed with a midwife at the business end and waters exploded in her face. Literally drenched her like she'd had a shower Blush

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 31/07/2019 11:23

Both times as soon as waters broke labour went into overdrive and babies were born very soon after!

YouJustDoYou · 31/07/2019 11:26

I can't give birth normally due to shit uterus so had to have it done for me each time. It never happened naturally.

Damntheman · 31/07/2019 12:58

First time the midwife had to burst the sac so they didn't go on their own. I had an epidural with that one so have no idea if they gushed :)

Second time they broke on their own, there was a very small puddle like as if someone had knocked a water bottle over and immediately set it up again. Then I just ... slowly leaked for the whole day until labour set in. It was nasty! Had to wear heavy duty pads to catch it, very uncomfortable.

Damntheman · 31/07/2019 12:59

With baby 2, waters broke at about 8am, early labour didn't really start until maybe 2pm? Not even a tiny cramp. Set in pretty fast after that and she was born at about 10pm.

jackernanna · 31/07/2019 15:26

My daughter's waters went when we were out in the park trying to tire out the 2 year old. She was in total panic as with DGC1 it had all happened in the birthing pool. She got a huge round of applause from the other Mums as we squelched slowly back to the car. My beautiful grand-daughter arrived 3 hours later in the bath at home Grin
