Packing cubes

Are they worth getting? Being very grown up and buying suitcases this week - usually everything for into a kit bag when we travel in my van to Europe. This year, we're flying so suitcases are a must.

My friends swear by packing cubes - are they worth it? Best place to buy?

Yes . Absolutely. Get them on amazon

Accountant222 · 28/07/2019 09:38

Yes they are really good, I think mine were from Groupon

lljkk · 28/07/2019 09:51

I do see the appeal, but... I would rate them as extra clutter & expense & something else to damage. I reckon I can achieve same thing with careful folding into cloth shopping bags that are also useful to have on holiday (self-catering).

I only discovered them last night from another mumsnet thread. I'm not convinced. It would take me longer to decide which cube I am going to use for what!

Reluctantbettlynch · 28/07/2019 10:07

Yes, make life so much easier! Each person has a different colour in our house!
They are tidier, give more space and you can find everything really easily

Pinkvici22 · 28/07/2019 10:08

Yes they’re great - eBay. They’re also brilliant for dividing washing on the way back!

LittleCandle · 28/07/2019 10:09

Yeah, just ordered us some from amazon yesterday. We had cheap ones to try out last year and they were great, but the zips weren't fantastic, but they were cheap! We've gone for better ones this time and colour coordinated to our suitcases, for we are sad old bags and don't care Grin

miaCara · 28/07/2019 10:14

Definitely worth getting. I have 2 sets which bring joy to my heart when I open my carefully packed suitcase.
I loaned both sets to my sister who is now a convert. Her DH scoffed mightily as he packed his stuff in carrier bags but he changed his mind once they arrived at the hotel and her things were simply transferred, still in their cubes, from case to drawers and back again at the end of the holiday. No scrabbling round at the bottom of several bags looking for one sock.
He's asked for some of his own for next time.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/07/2019 10:18

Yes definitely. I used them this year when we were on a holiday where we were on a different hotel every night and they were godsend

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 28/07/2019 10:18

Love mine! Have different coloured sets for everyone.

bionicnemonic · 28/07/2019 10:21

they're useful for a weekend away too, when you don’t bother with a suitcase, just pop clothes in one, toiletries in another and off you go

pontiouspilates · 28/07/2019 10:26

I love ours. Great for camping. We've also just returned from a family holiday with everyone using different coloured cube sets. Makes unpacking a joy as many clothes can just stay in the opened cubes. My DD also used them in her rucksack when interrailing and they worked like a dream.

NoLeopard · 28/07/2019 10:30

Don't people use underwear, toiletries, books etc to jam in the edges and corners of a case? If they have a special cube there must be tons of wasted space. Why can't you find a sock? It's only a suitcase not a haystack. Grin

BurningTheToast · 28/07/2019 10:39

The compression ones are really good too - I use them for bulkier things like knitwear. Mine are made by Eaglehawk or Eaglecreek (something like that - can't check as DS is away with them) and they're brilliant.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 28/07/2019 10:52

No wasted space NoLeopard I can bizarrely fit more in. We often check in a large bag, so on arrival it's easier to split up everyone's stuff.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/07/2019 10:55

burning I'm thinking of the compression ones for my hols, does yours come with a pump thing or are they rolled?

NoLeopard · 28/07/2019 11:32

Interesting Doc

burnoutbabe · 28/07/2019 11:33

Very handy for a multicenter trip where you can just keep items in the cubes and then put in drawers.
Got ours off eBay for £6. Get 3 cubes and 3 bags.

mummmy2017 · 28/07/2019 11:36

DD bought some, took up too much room.
We went with the roll an outfit thing.. YouTube.
You roll socks knickers top and bottoms and fold it over, so each roll is an outfit...
Amazing will do it again...

MardAsSnails · 28/07/2019 11:42

I find them awesome for hand luggage only trips. No risk of your pants falling out of your case when getting liquids and electronics out.

Murinae · 28/07/2019 11:44

I love mine but I fly every two weeks. I have the pro packing cubes in multi colours from Amazon. They are great and make packing and unpacking so much easier. I also get more in my suitcase with them and everything stays neat and organised.

Murinae · 28/07/2019 11:46

Yes also great for hand luggage trips when you have to open your case for security. Your knickers are safely in a cube and falling out when you open the case. Also much easier if you change your mind about taking something. Just find the cube and take it out rather than resorting the whole case.

bruffin · 28/07/2019 11:49

They are great, i bought them for a road trip where we changed hotels every few days. Really good for organising underwear etc

WelshMoth · 28/07/2019 11:55

I didn't expect so many responses. Thanks!

So you just place cubes opened and straight into drawers?! Even better!

A pp mentioned wasted bag space - I understand what she means - when you buy your cubes for say a large suitcase, do they fit perfectly into that space? I'm guessing you shove shoes and flip flops (e.g.) into unused space?

Off to google best deals.

I love them too.

I tried to pack my case with and without them, just to see. I found that they don't help me to get more in the case. But, they are great for organising and make unpacking and using your clothes etc easier. They're also good for privacy when travelling, as pps have already said.

I paid about £3.99 for a cheap set on eBay.
