Packing cubes

Are they worth getting? Being very grown up and buying suitcases this week - usually everything for into a kit bag when we travel in my van to Europe. This year, we're flying so suitcases are a must.

My friends swear by packing cubes - are they worth it? Best place to buy?

OP, I bought some natural cotton, drawstring bags on eBay for shoes. (To keep the bag and everything clean.)

Murinae · 28/07/2019 12:01

I just place them unopened into the drawer and just open one and take out what I need when I need it. Then zip it up again. I put dirty clothes then separate and then at the end of the holiday I pack some cubes with dirty clothes and one clean (always have somethings I’ve not worn!)

I have these in the multicoloured 6 pack set.

I love that you tried that out SandAndSea! Do you roll or fold? I roll and i can definitely get more in (or find it easier to close the case!) with them. Still pop shoes in corners too actually.

SandAndSea · 28/07/2019 12:05

Just to add that if you're buying on eBay, you'll want to check the delivery date is soon enough for your travels.

zonkin · 28/07/2019 12:06

I've never heard of these until this thread. They sound great - I'm off to have a look. thanks for the tip!

SandAndSea · 28/07/2019 12:07

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo - Yeah, I was really packing things in tightly, as much as possible, so lots of rolling and squeezing. Grin

ThePhoenixRises · 28/07/2019 12:14

I found an easier way to pack children's clothing

I put pants, socks, top and trousers/shorts rolled neatly into a sandwich bag and sealed.

That way no matter which bag is grabbed, a full outfit it ready to be worn.

I have also written on the front of the bags with what's packed in the bag.

Then the worn outfit can be returned to the bag so clean and dirty clothes don't get mixed up.

I also did separate labeled bags one with spare socks and one with spare pants.

Made things quicker and easier to find

I’m intrigued by this, but as we go away maybe once in 5 years it sounds like just something else to store when not away (ie most if the time). I can see the attraction for frequent travelling (as I used to before kids), but only if you sensibly take just what you need for the break - I tend to take most of my wardrobe ‘just in case’ so need every mm of suitcase space.

WelshMoth · 28/07/2019 12:47

Defo going to get. Thanks loads Thanks

I bought my husband some cheaper ones and the netting was really rough and the zips are rubbish. I much prefer my slightly more expensive ones.

Trumpton · 28/07/2019 13:32

My suitcase ready to go !
When I get there I just lift the cubes out . Place in drawers or hang dress etc in wardrobe .
This is for 2 week working holiday . Case weighs 16kg .
Cheap as chips set as the zips don’t really matter if they are in a case .
But I will treat myself to some better quality ones one day .

I've not used these particular ones but ikea sell them 6 pieces for £6.

SaintEyning · 28/07/2019 14:57

I have the IKEA ones and did two weeks in Thailand with DS hand luggage only. Amazing what we managed to fit in! Also go away a lot with DP for weekends and able to squeeze tons in if we are going somewhere with unpredictable weather.

plunkplunkfizz · 28/07/2019 15:36

YY to compression packing cubes. They are amazing.

fedup21 · 28/07/2019 16:23

These look like such a good idea!

How many do you need for one person for a week?!

HouseworkAvoider10 · 28/07/2019 16:35

Nah, cant be arsed with them.

But then I travel a lot, so I've got packing down to a fine art.

Trumpton · 28/07/2019 16:36

Because they are soft it doesn’t matter how many you use .

  1. Underwear and sleep stuff
  2. Shoes
  3. Double sided one trousers in one side, tops in the other side.
  4. Toiletries and bits and bobs.
But you could have another for dresses .
Yogagirl123 · 28/07/2019 16:41

I have just brought some, in the hope it will make holiday packing easier, just plonk the cube in the drawer when we arrive.

RubbingHimSourly · 28/07/2019 16:43

I just use carrier bags and pop a full outfit including undies in each one. It works the same way.

SaxxedtotheMax · 28/07/2019 16:47

Sorry to dampen the mood Hmm but does anyone worry about bedbugs, is it better to leave everything in your own case rather than decant?

Born worrier here Blush

elrider · 28/07/2019 16:49

Can you post any good deals you find, please?

SageYourResoluteOracle · 28/07/2019 17:25

I discovered these a few years back and they're brilliant. What we do is each have our own colour and then- if flying- pop a few of each person's cubes into each piece of luggage. That way, we've all got some clothes to wear if luggage goes missing. And yes- brilliant for unpacking, rolling bags into drawers and then repacking at the end.

Besides, the neatness of a suitcase packed with these pleases me greatly! Grin

BurningTheToast · 28/07/2019 18:15

@AndNoneForGretchenWeiners

I'm thinking of the compression ones for my hols, does yours come with a pump thing or are they rolled?

Neither. They have a special zip so that you close them and then carry on pulling the zip round again and it squashes everything down.

This video shows how they work: (If the link doesn't work, just google - loads of videos)

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/07/2019 20:12

Thanks!
