Heatwaves - do you like them or loathe them?

I have to say that as much as I hate winter, I just can not tolerate excessive heat. The older I am getting the less I seem to handle these humid, extra hot, sticky days. I feel completely worn out, weak and shaky, really nauseous and down right moody. I can’t sleep so feel shattered too. Dh on the other hand (who also works outside) loves it, whilst I seem to be roasting And wilting from the inside out, he is calm and mellow and says if you pace yourself it’s great!
Mine you, I shouldn’t moan as it’ll probably be pissing it down when we go on our hols to Somerset in two weeks!!

HATE them. The UK is also not set up for them at all - lack of open plan housing, no screens on windows, no ceiling fans or A/C.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/07/2019 18:22

I probably stink.

Spent a lot of time in the Tube and the only thing worst than the Central Line was the Northern.

Deodorant is a very useful invention but sadly not a miracle.

Have a horrible headache, and somehow I also managed to acquire a cold.

The dogs are miserable as fuck as well. The heatwave can fuck off right now.

HeadintheiClouds · 24/07/2019 18:30

Summer colds in the middle of a heatwave are like one big cosmic joke, aren’t they? Sympathies

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/07/2019 18:34

Thank you.

ExpletiveDelighted · 24/07/2019 18:36

Hate them. I like summer when it's cooler, below about 22°C as I like wearing sandals, sitting outside and the long hours of daylight, but hate it once it's over 25°.

Roussette · 24/07/2019 18:39

Love it! Hasten to add, I'm retired, and might feel differently if I was still working.

I wake early, I have lots of energy, the early mornings are just beautiful here. Washing is hung out by 9am and dry by 11am. I'm awake far more hours than ghastly grey rainy winter. The warmth just brings me alive. I don't get sweaty. I sleep with a fan if it's very hot. I wish this could go on for weeks.

Dowser · 24/07/2019 18:40

I love them

Today the north East has had a kick at the ball...and yesterday 👍

elprup · 24/07/2019 18:49

Commuting into central London to an office with no air con is absolute hell on earth. I don’t understand how anyone who commutes and works in London can enjoy this weather?

Of course if I were on holiday by the pool it would be a different story, but there’s really nothing to love about it when you’re stuck in 37C London.

Fortunately Friday is going to be considerably cooler and Saturday even more so, with rain! Hurrah.

awaynboilyurheid · 24/07/2019 19:12

Love them , we have sunshine today!, however Scotland’s idea of a heat wave is quite different temps from London and the south but last year we had a heatwave, it was fantastic.

shinynewapple · 24/07/2019 22:31

I don't like any extremes of temperature. I'm happiest between around 18-22*.
I only go on holiday to hotter climates out of season. Think my problem is my age (menopause) and also weigh more than my ideal.

shinynewapple · 24/07/2019 22:33

To be fair though, I'm loving sitting outside in shorts and a vest at 10.30

TildaKauskumholm · 24/07/2019 22:42

Vile, hate summer, what's to like about being sweaty, clothes sticking to you, not sleeping, flies, ants etc etc. Roll on autumn.

Crunchymum · 24/07/2019 22:53

Loathe heatwaves. I have arthritis as per a PP and to be honest I prefer the arthritic pain (I say this somewhat flippantly as I'm currently in a period of good health / remission. The reality is, during flare up, I'd rip my own eyes out to stop the pain!!)

Roussette · 24/07/2019 22:54

I'm not sweaty, clothes don't stick to me, I sleep fine.... flies, yes they're annoying!

Hadenoughofitall441 · 24/07/2019 22:56

I like heatwaves if they stick in the 22/23 regions once it starts going past that I’m fucked. I can’t tolerate the heat well.

lljkk · 24/07/2019 22:58

Love Love the heat. Meals outside. Blazing sun. My hands never cold. Bring it on.

Singleandproud · 24/07/2019 23:03

It depends whether I’m at a work or not and where I am.

Last year we visited London during the heatwave, the air on the tube was stifling and could feel the sweat dripping down my back.

If I’m working I teach science and my classroom is freezing in the winter and really hot in the summer so very uncomfortable during a heatwave, particularly if the Bunsen burners are on.

This year, I’ve broken up from work and live on the coast, so can pop to the beach or stay in. I cant imagine it is very fun for anyone living in a city centre or without a garden though.

Bloodybridget · 24/07/2019 23:21

I was thinking earlier this year that I wouldn't mind another summer like the last one (I live in London), but this is too much. Up to high 20s, I can cope, being retired so not having to do rush hour travel etc. But 30s, just no.

TapasForTwo · 24/07/2019 23:37

I love it, but I'm not in London. I also drive to an office with aircon in a car with aircon.

Where has it been over 30 degrees for the last month?
We seem to have had 19 - 21 degrees for about 3 weeks before it ramped up. We have 34 degrees forecast for Sheffield tomorrow.

Knittedjimmychoos · 25/07/2019 00:07

Used to like them, now I just see them as major washing opportunity eg tomorow we wash feather duvet, sofas covers and thick stuff. Followed by sitting inside with fans and keeping cool.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 25/07/2019 04:21

@Afternooninthepark

When winter rolls round, start drinking grated ginger in boiling water with lemon and honey. I had dreadful Reynaulds for years and this cleared mine up in a couple of weeks.

And yes, I am spiritually Of The North - summer heat can do one.

Janista · 25/07/2019 04:34

Watching from Australia. They say 39 degrees on Thursday in London area. And people's houses have no air con, flyscreens or fans. You have my sympathies! It gets hot here in summer but we manage as houses are often fully air conditioned for that season.

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 25/07/2019 08:28

I prefer winter weather to heatwaves. I hate how clothes stick to me and I feel gross until I can get to a shower.

Tumbleweed101 · 25/07/2019 08:38

I enjoy short bursts of heatwaves and even more so if they occur when I’m off work (like this week).

Hate having to work in the heat though. Overall I prefer this weather to freezing winter weather.

MegaClutterSlut · 25/07/2019 09:06

Bring on winter!
