Unusual City Break

Looking for a city break (around 3 nights) for me and DP, were not romantic so we won't enjoy Rome/Florence but we did enjoy Naples.

I want to find a hidden gem Grin

Dubrovnik
Barcelona
York
Edinburgh
Bergen
Reykjavik
Rome...putting Rome in because so much to see and do, not because it may be romantic (I didn't find it so)
Athens
Stratford/Warwick

Porto or girona or San Sebastián or Biarritz or Valencia or cordoba or Cadiz (slightly complex travel). None are off the beaten track but depending on time of year can be quieter. Have fun !

timetomoveon · 19/07/2019 14:01

Budapest
Hamburg
Sarajevo
Brussels
Krakow
Copenhagen

Not necessarily off the beaten track but all lovely for a weekend away.

baddaboom · 19/07/2019 14:10

Since when did you have to be romantic to enjoy Rome or Venice? I would recommend Lisbon, Porto, Seville, Madrid, Bruges.

StCharlotte · 19/07/2019 14:17

I've been to probably half the places listed above, including Lille.

Don't go to Lille.

WickedGoodDoge · 19/07/2019 14:31

Moscow - if you can be bothered to get/pay for visas

Ribrabrob · 19/07/2019 15:54

Istanbul or Tel Aviv, both unique and beautiful Smile

donquixotedelamancha · 19/07/2019 15:58

I think you have to be in a coma, not to enjoy Rome. Naples is fun but Rome is magnificent, you don't need to be romantic to enjoy it.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 19/07/2019 16:15

Istanbul and St Petersburg (as previous poster, if you can be bothered with visa), I have also been to Prague more than once and although quite small I find something different each time.

TheCatThatDanced · 19/07/2019 16:25

StCharlotte - I agree with Lille - horrid! Also whoever mentioned Marseille... it can be a bit rough, as my DM says 'it's a sailor's town!'.

Quite liked Seville but hot in summer.

Copenhagen, Oslo etc nice.

La Rochelle very pretty and relaxing marina town. Much prefer it to Bordeaux (nearby) which I find very humid in summer, the newish Wine Museum isn't all that and its spread out.

They’re doing trips to Chernobyl now.

Isthebigwomanhere · 19/07/2019 16:36

We did Chernobyl earlier this year.
It was fantastic. Such a good trip.
It was so cheap.
The food was amazing.
The people were amazed that people wanted to visit.
We got Uber's everywhere and it never cost more than £2
The actual Chernobyl trip was fascinating and included a guide and lunch.

PolarBearOnARaft · 19/07/2019 16:36

Third Istanbul if you don't mind the flight for a weekend.

Also, Rome, nothing to do with romance. It's a brilliant city packed full of history.

WarmSausageTea · 19/07/2019 16:47

Riga - has a really interesting mix of architecture.
Ljubljana - beautiful, compact, chilled.
Kiev and Chernobyl - fascinating and thought-provoking.
Skopje - possibly awkward with flights, but jaw-dropping.

Personally, I’d avoid Istanbul, but DP loves it.

Chune · 19/07/2019 17:27

Isthebigwomanhere

Sounds brilliant, my husband really wants to go.

Isthebigwomanhere · 19/07/2019 17:46

Honestly @Chune I would highly recommend it

MrsGrindah · 19/07/2019 17:50

Tallin
Baden Baden
Krakow
Valencia

Although I have to say I live in fear of hen and stag parties these days. Whilst you can avoid them with judicious choices re hotels and bars etc. It’s not so easy to avoid them on the flight

Dollywilde · 19/07/2019 17:54

Vilnius in Lithuania! We had a thread about it on here a few days ago, will find it...

Awrite · 19/07/2019 17:59

I loved Antwerp and Helsinki.

Budapest worth a visit but I believe is a bit seedy underneath.

Lots to see in Athens.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 19/07/2019 18:00

We're just back from Copenhagen. A really lovely city with lots to do.

OneThreadOnly0101 · 19/07/2019 18:04

Speaking as a very non-romantic person, you are foolish to bypass Rome and Florence! 😱 Packed full of glorious history and ancient sites; wine; pasta... I love Italy.

Paris - again, you aren't vetted for romantic notions on arrival.
I love Istanbul.
Krakow?
Reykjavik - although it's a crime to spend so little time in Iceland.
Didn't particularly like Brussels, Amsterdam or Madrid.
Edinburgh is lovely.
Dubrovnik.
Munich.
I yearn to go to Seville.
Marrakech?

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 19/07/2019 19:55

Sarajevo

LaLemonLa · 19/07/2019 20:24

Finally sat back down from work and ready to look into all these suggestions. Thanks everyone.

I love Italy and we've done Milan and Naples and Lake Como, id just like to try somewhere a bit out of the ordinary.

Chernobyl trips?! That's right up our street!
