Unusual City Break

LaLemonLa · 18/07/2019 21:32

Looking for a city break (around 3 nights) for me and DP, were not romantic so we won't enjoy Rome/Florence but we did enjoy Naples.

I want to find a hidden gem Grin

Stavanger

Sofia

Both places DH and I have been and loved.

My daughter went to Oslo with Guides and loved it.

PolarBearOnARaft · 18/07/2019 22:51

Yes, Belfast, Brilliant for a city break.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 18/07/2019 22:54

Oh and I live in Aberdeen. Very unusual.

Dundee is pretty accessible and up-and-coming. V&A has a mind blowing exhibition if you are into video games and gaming. I’ve been twice already

TheWashingFairyatemyhamster · 18/07/2019 23:16

Aarhus. Good if you like modern art, Scandinavian design, jazz and food. It is also not far from the Danish Lake District.

Do not bother visiting the ‘highest point in Denmark’. Unless you are from Norfolk or the Netherlands it is underwhelming.

midsomermurderess · 18/07/2019 23:40

Not that hidden, but maybe Lyon. Or Zaragoza, Murcia? All good for a few days mooching, eating.

TreaterAnita · 18/07/2019 23:54

Amused by the idea that you have to be romantic to enjoy Rome or Florence, but anyway:

Copenhagen
Madrid
Bologna
Lisbon
Brussels

A friend went to Riga and her pics of it were beautiful, looks like a lovely place.
I think Glasgow's already been mentioned but I'll mention it again. Loads to see and do, some great architecture and friendly locals.

Wrocław- lots of bridges like a mini Venice, pretty cobbled streets, really good food, and during the summer there’s lots of hidden outdoor bars in parks, river banks etc. Better, you don’t get the abundance of drunken yobs as it’s just not tolerated so people drink responsibly. We often stroll back to our apartment at 2am, perfectly safe. Krakow is very touristy, Gdańsk is lovely and if you’re there during summer or early autumn, you can also visit Sopot or Gdynia which are pretty.

I really like Budapest and Prague, if a little overdone. Belfast is nice closer to home (recommend the Black Cab tours but skip the GoT exhibition which is there until September 1st; do a location tour instead if a GoT fan). Corks also lovely but accommodation is pricey. Brugge is lovely, romantic but not enough to do. If either of you is into cars, Stuttgart’s nice (like the Christmas markets, and they’ve got lots of car museums).

Bristol. Fabulous city with loads of interesting stuff to do.

Rivkka · 19/07/2019 00:22

Is there much to do in Porto?

scaryteacher · 19/07/2019 00:24

Loved Lisbon, Vienna (superb cake in both), Copenhagen, Prague and recently Stockholm.

Leuven is pretty and although it doesn't do it for me (probably as I've lived here too long) Brussels is quirky, and has some great Breughel stuff on at the moment.

CherryPavlova · 19/07/2019 00:35

Annecy
Biarritz
Montreaux (stunning)
Bucharest
Strasbourg
Gothenburg

Heratnumber7 · 19/07/2019 00:39

Toulouse
Marrakesh
Bruges

BlueSkiesLies · 19/07/2019 07:43

Belgrade. Fab city, very safe and very affordable. Interesting mix of architecture and history. River cities are always a beaut in summer.

PolarBearOnARaft · 19/07/2019 07:53

@rivka. My in laws preferred Porto to Lisbon. Said more to do, more relaxed.

londonloves · 19/07/2019 07:58

Gdańsk in Poland is fun - you could stay at the seaside in Sopot and train into the city.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 19/07/2019 08:00

Bologna (Italy)
Plovdiv (Bulgaria)

GeneandFred · 19/07/2019 08:01

Tallinn

beanaseireann · 19/07/2019 08:29

Belfast.
Titanic exhibition.
Bus tour or Black Taxi tour.
The North Antrim coast is lovely for a day out.

Jsmith99 · 19/07/2019 13:44

Toulouse is great if you have an interest in aviation. You can do the Airbus factory tour!

hanahsaunt · 19/07/2019 13:49

Hamburg is brilliant.

DieCryHate · 19/07/2019 13:53

Geneva then take the train that goes to Gruyere, past the lake into the mountains. Check out the Giger bar and museum in Gruyere. Eat all of the cheese and chocolate and drink the beer.

Daffodil2018 · 19/07/2019 13:56

Tel Aviv is great and you can do a trip to Jerusalem too.

ShatnersWig · 19/07/2019 13:57

I really liked Brussels, thought Bruges hugely overrated.
