How long do you leave cards on display for?

It was my DD's birthday on 25 June and her birthday cards are cluttering up my mantelpiece. I really want to chuck them out but would I be mean to do so?

What's a "normal" / "acceptable" amount of time to leave them on display?

One week here.

TarragonSauce · 18/07/2019 17:00

One week. Unless they are addressed to me in which case they last about 10 minutes. I hate cards birthdays and mother's days. I only tolerate Xmas because of the food.

Love,
Grumpy

Whatsyournameagain · 18/07/2019 17:06

A week maximum for me. My parents used to throw any cards out (apart from Christmas cards) the day after, because the occasion had been and gone!

sue51 · 18/07/2019 17:12

A couple of days for birthday a day for mother and father's day. If I had my way, I wouldn't bother with christmas cards at all. I'm not a lover of cards and would much prefer to call, email or see someone in person on special occasions.

Kathulu · 18/07/2019 17:14

I leave them up 2-3 days at most. I recycle the generic "Happy Birthday from Granny etc" but my Husband, Kids and myself always write something special, funny or poems in ours. For those I now take a photo of the inserts before chucking them. I moved house last year and had to when I found a box of cards piled high. Too much clutter for me.

ScreamingValenta · 18/07/2019 17:16

About a week.

TeenTimesTwo · 18/07/2019 17:27

Up to a month. Smile Minimum of 2 weeks.
You're all grumpy!

TheRLodger · 18/07/2019 17:44

2 weeks on this house unless especially nice

CakeNinja · 18/07/2019 18:29

My cards come down 5 days after my birthday (then it’s my brothers birthday so as a kid mine were all down then and I hate cards and clutter so it suits me to keep this up!).
My dcs cards stay up for a week. Dp doesn’t get many cards (family only) and he reads them and leaves them flat on the side.
Christmas cards get read and recycled instantly after we have ten up on the mantelpiece. I’m ruthless.

PolkadotLollipop · 18/07/2019 18:31

About a week here too

lorn195 · 18/07/2019 18:32

A week at least, any longer they go into the recycling.

Oblomov19 · 18/07/2019 18:34

4-5 days? A week? I collect them up the night before the recycling bins are emptied! Grin(Every other week)

imsuchagrump · 18/07/2019 18:37

3-4 days I also think it's odd longer than a week , the occasion has been and gone plus they get a on my nerves falling down etc .

pregnantncnc · 18/07/2019 18:38

For birthdays: Up to two weeks, unless it's a big birthday where celebrations carry on throughout the month and new cards keep arriving etc (a month in that case). I hate getting a belated card and putting it straight into the recycling though.

Xmas cards will be up until decs come down.

If a friend sends a thoughtful card if I'm having a hard time etc, I may keep them "up" forever. I have one in the kitchen from a couple of years ago because it meant so much when I received it.

MaximusHeadroom · 18/07/2019 18:40

About a week here. Kids can keep special ones (which they rarely want to do) then I cut off the fronts for DD to use for endless art projects

Animum2 · 18/07/2019 19:05

1 week then they get put in a box to be kept as I have never thrown away any card I've been sent, even when I left home I took all my cards with me

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/07/2019 19:07

Birthday cards stay up a week. Christmas cards come down on Boxing Day so that DH's birthday cards can go up.

Geekster1963 · 18/07/2019 19:09

A week.

Justkeeprollingalong · 18/07/2019 19:10

A week.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 18/07/2019 19:14

waves to @LemonTreeLemon, I may actually be your mother.

we have dh's Father's Day cards up, and they replaced our Anniversary card (april) and before that Mothering Sunday cards.
next up is his birthday, BUT we have visitors before that so I will take down his FD cards when I dust.

I am a terrible housewife.

wendz86 · 18/07/2019 19:15

I usually leave them 3 weeks . Seems a shame to take them down so soon .

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/07/2019 19:15

1 week for mine and dh

Up to 9 months for the children...can’t be arsed to take them down til the next birthday

They are on a piece of string in the playroom/diningroom

Having said that its just occurred to me that ds1 has moved out...his cards won’t go up anymore

TheSmallAssassin · 18/07/2019 19:16

About a month here. I'm in no rush to get rid of them, generally.

DuesToTheDirt · 18/07/2019 19:16

Gosh, it's weeks in our house.

qazxc · 18/07/2019 19:17

2 weeks
