@GrouchyKiwi Gutted for you and the NZ team - they were amazing. But am so pleased and relieved that England finally managed it. I'm exhausted too!

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer - legends forever

howwudufeel · 14/07/2019 19:42

That was truly amazing.

mbosnz · 14/07/2019 19:43

Sobs. Both ways. Happy for England, sad for Aotearoa. Proud of both. Sportsmanship matters more than the win. And both sides have exemplified this.

@MotherTime3

In general terms, cricket is often exciting at the end especially in T20 (where the teams bowl 20 overs each) where the batting team need to get a set amount of runs off a few balls.

This was exceptionally exciting though - it's not normally so stressful. Partly because it was for the World Cup at Lords and England have never won and partly because off all the madness in the last over leading to a tie. And it going down to the last ball of the super over.

This was TURBO-exciting

User10fuckingmillion · 14/07/2019 19:43

That was unbelievably stressful

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 14/07/2019 19:47

This just in - Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer never have to buy themselves a beer again...

BretonDinosaur · 14/07/2019 19:48

Why is Ben Stokes a legend? He played test cricket in a one day match. His 50 was off 81 balls which is really substandard for one day cricket, let alone World Cup final one day cricket.

As much as I’m delighted England won I think we did it by the skin of our teeth and mostly down to luck, not skill. Dot ball after dot ball is not what we need when chasing more than a run a ball.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/07/2019 19:49

@kiltedsheep Thanks. I finally understand why people cry at sport. I never have before but I feel like it now!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/07/2019 19:49

I'm just come off the phone to her. She's absolutely delighted — she said she jumped up and down for the first time in twenty years (with two replacement knees too!).

Both teams played well and should feel very proud. But Lady Luck was smiling on England today.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 14/07/2019 19:50

Nice to hear the crowd at Lords singing its coming home.

DorothyParkersCat · 14/07/2019 19:51

@namechangedyetagain

Flowers I was going to post earlier I hope they do it for your granddad but didn't want to jinx it!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/07/2019 19:51

If they bring their wives/children out I'm going to be a complete wreck.

DorothyParkersCat · 14/07/2019 19:54

@BretonDinosaur

Because once they ended up in a car crash situation losing wickets, Stokes was under pressure and had to hold it together and then even being totally knackered went out to bat in the super over.

I agree that the NZ total wasn't high and I was expecting England to win easily - but NZ were bowling well.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 14/07/2019 19:54

Ah Stokes, what a man.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 14/07/2019 19:54

Ben Stokes is a legend because he won us the match. Without his 84 we'd have been fucked. The pitch was turning to shit, time was ticking, he kept his head. He was great.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/07/2019 19:54

Channel 4 have pushed the news across to More4. I'm so so pleased I could watch it today.

RandomNameChange415 · 14/07/2019 19:56

Let’s not forget Jos Buttler. Definitely the third of the three heroes (am biased as am also from Somerset, but I think his work in both Super Overs was crucial).

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/07/2019 19:56

If Stokes was playing test cricket, so was Grandhomme. I don't like defensive bowling (or batting) at ODIs, I like more peril!

BretonDinosaur · 14/07/2019 19:56

If he’d not played dot ball after dot ball then we’d have actually won it rather than sent it to (admittedly a very entertaining) super over. He did keep his head but he was far too conservative for one day cricket. Looking forward to seeing him in the ashes though.

Have spent most of the afternoon being frustrated by him.

BringMeTea · 14/07/2019 19:57

So happy for Polka's grandma. The BEST!

namechangedyetagain · 14/07/2019 19:58

Ah but they did. He'd be delightedSmile

I'll be here for the Ashes (except when I'm at the Oval).

Can't wait.

Bloody love cricket🏏

BretonDinosaur · 14/07/2019 19:58

Absolutely, Polkadots

GrouchyKiwi · 14/07/2019 19:59

I don't think the wicket allowed for more explosive play. There was a lot of turn, and though it dried out more later on, it dried out in a way that made it tough for the batsmen. Which is why Williamson chose to bat. He is a brilliant captain and reads the conditions so well.

That England got to the super over at all was down to luck, in the end.

JacquesHammer · 14/07/2019 20:04

Because on a bowler’s pitch with a batting collapse threatening he played a superb innings. A truly great international innings isn’t just about the runs, it’s about the impact on the game.

TypsTrycks · 14/07/2019 20:05

I just realised Ben Stokes is from NZ and his parents live there, the irony 😯
