Yes, I think they said earlier it was hard underneath but soft on top.

He played so well to just hold it steady and calm everyone down.

(I do think that there was a bit of fate though!)

BringMeTea · 14/07/2019 20:10

Fate indeed. A very special match.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/07/2019 20:15

Ah, I'm so proud of the boys, and Kane Williamson especially. It's a special feeling of pride when people love your team because of their sportsmanship and playing spirit.

Aw, GrouchyKiwi they were incredible. It was an amazing game because it was so evenly matched. It could've gone either way and they were unlucky, but they were absolutely amazing opponents. Brilliant match.

burblish · 14/07/2019 20:18

Kane Williamson is a class act - he has captained NZ superbly in this tournament.

MockerstheFeManist · 14/07/2019 20:19

Awwww, Kiwis. The fingle ficker of fate and all that. True sports, unlike some down under we could mention.

mbosnz · 14/07/2019 20:21

I'm genuinely impressed with the graciousness in victory being shown.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/07/2019 20:24

Both teams have been wonderful.

ClashCityRocker · 14/07/2019 20:25

Aw man that was amazing!

Really gutted for New Zealand though, I think it was pure luck coming down on England's side rather than us playing better on the day.

Some great spirit and resilience shown from both sides.

Bluebluered · 14/07/2019 20:44

Omg I completely forgot about this thread!!! Super Overs?! Ties? It was like football worldcup penalties!! Fantastic game!! My phone has been on fire the past hour from friends and family!! Wicked day!! So happy!!

And have the utmost respect for Kane, he is a fantastic sportsman. What a brilliant bunch of sportsmen the New Zealander’s are.

I do have to say that I agree a lot of it was pure luck, but it's about time some pure luck went England's way!

Ginnymweasley · 14/07/2019 21:37

Totally forgot about this thread. I am so happy. I couldn't watch the final ball at all. Well done England and well done New Zealand who played well and are fantastic sportsmen. Ben Stokes did brilliantly under pressure.

ajandjjmum · 14/07/2019 21:56

What a fantastic game!

A new generation of cricket fans will have been created today.

Amazing game and one which will remain in our memories for a very long time. The power of sport hey!
Must have a gentle nod of thanks to Sky for letting channel 4 show the match - in a none Sky household it was very much appreciated.
Cricket in every park over the summer i reckon.

ForalltheSaints · 15/07/2019 07:23

I have a mixture of happiness that England won, and a feeling that New Zealand were very unlucky and have been a credit to sport.

Now comes the even more important cricket- England regaining the Ashes.

Very strange feeling to watch cricket on tv as opposed to being there, given it is the first match on tv in 14 years. If you have never been to watch cricket and live anywhere near Lords, go and take your children, even if it is for a county match.

ajandjjmum · 15/07/2019 09:07

You're right outofnothing - good to see Sky doing that.

Apparently one of the NZ players has tweeted 'Kids forget sport, take up baking or something'. Bless them, they must be sore this morning. We were very lucky.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/07/2019 09:49

That was Jimmy Neesham. Apparently his Twitter is very amusing. Almost makes me wish I still had my account. There's a nice article on the Beeb about him.

This is the tweet: "Kids, don't take up sport. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy."

DoctorTwo · 15/07/2019 12:14

@GrouchyKiwi I feel for you and all the other Kiwis. Kane Williamson was magnificent throughout the tournament.

What got me were all the men, women and children wearing Asian team shirts and all were cheering England on.

@DorothyParkersCat

You're right, that was the best white ball game ever, more twists than The Cresta Run, and to finish level after 51 overs, for New Zealand to lose on boundaries scored is just cruel.

mbosnz · 15/07/2019 12:24

DoctorTwo, don't feel for us - enjoy your victory! Grin

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/07/2019 13:42

There are some bitter people out on Twitter today! Not the Kiwis, they all seem lovely. It's mostly Indian and Pakistani people.

One particularly charming man thought the "most boundaries" rule must have been decided by a woman who doesn't understand cricket.

Ginnymweasley · 15/07/2019 13:50

I noticed that polkadots also a few people stating that Stokes cheated and such. Like you said it's not the kiwis it's mainly people from other countries. Very odd.

mbosnz · 15/07/2019 14:31

Ae, well, let them chew on their sour grapes. Fat lot of good it will do them!

Obviously with such a tight, close game, there will be calls that will be debated for ever after. Fact is, England won, they played a damned good game, the luck was with them, and they won. Good on them. (Wonder when/if I'll start saying/thinking 'we'?!)

MockerstheFeManist · 15/07/2019 16:29

Hang On, Hang On, Hang On.....

Seems there's been a recount and we didn't win:

Ginnymweasley · 15/07/2019 16:36

One ex umpire stated that he believed that england should have got 5 not 6 runs off of the overthrow that hit Stokes bat. The ICC disagree and say that it is down to the umpires on the field to decide and they are not commenting further. New Zealand players think it's just one of those things that sometimes happens in sport and tbf the rule is quite vague to interpret in a pressure situation without the choice of slow mo and camera angles. Total nom story picked up mainly by Australian and Indian news.
