Who’s watching?!!

Looks like cricket might be coming home!!

We did! There is just a bit of debate about how many runs should have been awarded when the ball hit Stokes bat when he was on the ground. It is all about if the batsmen had crossed at the point the ball was thrown. The Kiwis are not complaining and the ICC says its happy about the decision the umpires made on the field. There are a number of highly marginal decisions which are not referred upstairs and this was one of several. Not every tiny detail can be examined by the umpires. It was a great day and everyone is going to accept the result. It was also a fine day for sportsmanship and sheer determination to win.

BadLad · 15/07/2019 23:59

I agree. After this game only 1 team will remain who haven’t won the wc.

New Zealand and South Africa, if we are not counting Bangladesh or Afghanistan.

legspinner · 16/07/2019 06:18

Oh, my heart. Black Caps supporter here, despite being English-born. I've been watching cricket for 40+ years now and that was the most exciting, crazy, insane game I have ever seen. Congratulations to England, and kudos to both teams for a brilliant game - for me, after two ties, it's immaterial who won (although I know I'll be in the minority here!)

Feeling very emotional for Kane W and the team, and ridiculously proud of the way they played. And kudos to Eoin Morgan for his classiness. The main thing I remember about NZ losing to Australia 4 years ago was having our faces rubbed in it by all the Aussies. Didn't happen here, and I still feel quite choked at that photo of an inconsolable Guptill being consoled by Neesham and Woakes.

Let's face it, England needed this win - we don't have Brexit chaos in NZ thank heavens!

@legspinner You're right - it's a welcome distraction from all the Brexit madness. And I'm not a fan of Theresa May, but even I was glad to see her enjoying herself at Lords (and at the No 10 reception afterwards).

I wasn't really into cricket at all before this WC, but I became increasingly obsessed as the weeks went past. And what a finish!

But the thing that I particularly love about my new favourite sport - as opposed to football, which I also follow - is how it places an emphasis on being a decent human being. I loved how Kohli indicated to the Indian fans that they should stop booing Steve Smith; I love how all the supporters stand to applaud a century, even if it's for the opposing team's batsman. And Kane Williamson and his team were so incredibly classy in defeat, even though it was obviously devastating for them.

New Zealand and South Africa, if we are not counting Bangladesh or Afghanistan.

Actually SA didn’t play their first ODI until 1991. I’m talking about the original countries who have been playing the WC since the start. Afghanistan, Bangladesh and SA are newbies in comparison.

I love this too. It’s not called a “gentleman’s game” for no reason. Or gentlewomans game! The clapping for centuries and 50’s are great. Even great fielding is applauded by the opponents and players.

But my dh and Eoin Morgan aren’t so forgiving of Smith! If you cheat, you won’t be welcomed back immediately and although Kohli did an admirable thing, it wasn’t needed. People have their own opinions about cheaters.

BadLad · 16/07/2019 11:57

SA have played in 8 out of 12 world cups, so hardly newbies, and even in their ban they produced some of the best players in the world, which is why they were immediately competitive in both forms of the game when they returned.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 16/07/2019 12:08

@MotherTime3 what a tournament and what a final match to start with 😁

Just learn the very basics. It’s much easier than the uninitiated think. Then accept there are obscure laws and even more obscure laws and the debates are all a part of it.

We had Wimbledon on a lap top, channel 4 on the tv, thanks Sky, plus TMS as their commentary can’t be bettered. It was weird that the picture lagged though.

Was beside myself and didn’t even take a drink, god knows how.

Huge commiserations to Williamson and NZ who were extremely sporting. Two finals in a row. Their time will come.

ajandjjmum · 16/07/2019 12:50

I was at the England vs. Australia match at Lords. The crowd had certainly not forgiven Smith or Warner!

Bluebluered · 16/07/2019 14:18

SA aren’t one of the original teams. All of the original teams have all won at least 1 WC now, apart from NZ. It’s just the way it’s regarded in the cricket world. Not disagreeing they’re a great team.

OP posts:
Bluebluered · 16/07/2019 14:30

Exactly, @ajandjjmum! I think it’s hard to regain a good reputation in cricket. Once it’s gone, you need to be a really really good player to win people over again. My dh is a massive cricket fan and he won’t forgive them, so Kohli telling his fans to quieten down was a bit “meh”....also, it’s really shitty how if it were a player from one of the south Asian countries, they would’ve been hung drawn and quartered. Yet these 2 were allowed back so quickly.

OP posts:
ajandjjmum · 16/07/2019 14:36

With smirks on their faces.

Interesting comment upthread about the NZ players remembering the 'unsportsmanlike' behaviour of the Aussie team when they won the last world cup, which didn't happen on Sunday. Hope we would have been as magnanimous in defeat - which could have so easily been the case.

FrancesFryer · 16/07/2019 20:16

ajandjjmum

I should think so, we've had plenty of practice at defeat

BadLad · 16/07/2019 22:49

The way it's regarded in the cricket world? Lol. It's cricket trivia.

It's correct now that you have said "original".

legspinner · 17/07/2019 06:28

@ajandjjmum just to make the distinction, I don't think the NZ players said anything about the Aussies being unsportsmanlike last WC in 2015 (Brendon McCullum was far too classy for that) It's just my memory of what the Aussies were like afterwards.

And how about this, I've just read that Ben Stokes immediately asked for those four overthrows to be taken off. If that's true, even more kudos to him:

MockerstheFeManist · 17/07/2019 06:34

All of the original teams have all won at least 1 WC now, apart from NZ

And East Africa, who were in the 1975 CWC.
(An entirely white and Asian squad.)

RedBullBlood · 17/07/2019 06:45

Is it that hard to regain a good reputation in cricket? The Australians suspended for ball tampering were pretty harshly dealt with, unlike England's Mike Atherton (fined only), du Plessis of South Africa (fined only), another South African, Philander (fined only) among quite a lot of others!

BadLad · 17/07/2019 07:35

It was rife in the early 90s, as pace bowling moved from endless bouncers to deceiving the batsman with swing. Pakistan did it throughout their tour of England in 1992. England complained like mad, which makes Atherton's doing it two years later even more ill-advised. He claimed he was using the dirt to keep his hands dry rather than alter the state of the ball.

FrancesFryer · 17/07/2019 07:40

I think because it was premeditated between three of them rather than a spur of the moment thing that most ball tampering incidents are.

FrancesFryer · 17/07/2019 07:43

And the fact that their attitude was oh shit, we got caught rather than ok we shouldn't have done it

Ginnymweasley · 17/07/2019 08:11

I think a lot of people didn't like the premeditation of it all and the fact they didn't exactly apologise straight away.
I live in Wales normally no one cares about cricket. Yesterday someone told me that England are cheats that fixed the world cup, so it looks like all the Asian voices on social media are been listened to by some people. Of course when asked to explain how they cheated they had no answer cause they have never watched a cricket match at all. Seems such a shame when people try to take a win away from a team for no reason other than their nationality. Just waiting for the english scum comments to start cause that's always fun to deal with. I think a lot of people could learn a lot from New Zealand players and fans tbh.

Bluebluered · 17/07/2019 21:15

🙄 Are you done? You know exactly what I meant and you’re being petty on purpose just to make sure you’re right.
I really hate people like you. Patronising, and rude, always nitpicking on what people say to make themselves look better. Just go away.

OP posts:
BadLad · 17/07/2019 22:46

And I despise people who stubbornly refuse to admit that they were wrong. All you had to say was "Yeah, I meant the teams who had played in all the world cups". Instead you tried to be patronising with some guff about how the cricket world would have known what you meant.

Take orders from you on how to post on here? I don't think so.

Bluebluered · 18/07/2019 09:42

Just get lost, you’re pathetic.

OP posts:
BadLad · 18/07/2019 10:15

Talk rubbish and you'll be picked up on it. Tantrum or not.
