Summer dresses with bras showing

Is this a thing now?
Over the last couple of weeks I've seen dozens of women wearing dresses which show their bras.
Not just straps but strapless or low backed dresses with a giant m&s boulder holder with the straps, top of the front and most of the back showing.
When I were a lass Wink that wasn't something I saw anyone do. Is it normal now or do I live in a weird fashion microcosm?

I'm glad it's not just me!!
It used to be the height of trampiness to show your bra straps etc and now they're fucking everywhere!!

Soola · 11/07/2019 21:00

I can remember crying when I was 15/16 and ready to go out of the door because my bra straps could be seen!

Mother got two tiny gold safety pins and pinned the straps under the straps of the dress and thus I couldn’t go to the ball!

My how times have changed!

My husband picked up a paper flower that was on the floor whilst my daughter was at ours and the look on his face when she told him it was hers and was a nipple cover worn under halter/strapless tops that had fallen off!

Where I am it has been really humid. I would imagine they are just wearing something comfortable in the heat rather than to look nice for others.

Bignicetree · 11/07/2019 21:07

Yup it's a thing !

LolaSmiles · 11/07/2019 21:09

I have the old fashioned view that underwear is to be worn under things and isn't seen (except bra straps on shoulders if worn with a strap top).

I equally hate the boxers on show look, leggings as trousers stretched so thin that knickers are on show and so on too.

Pipandmum · 11/07/2019 21:10

It’s been a thing for years. I think it looks terrible. There are plenty of different bras out there that could be used (halter neck, strapless, crossed).

Nautiloid · 11/07/2019 21:15

I feel very old now! I used to spend ages finding bras that wouldn't show.

It is totally a thing and has been for a long time !
I still hate my bra strap showing - can’t get past how it was viewed when I was younger.
I think it looks ok particularly when the colour works. A dirty white strap isn’t great but I’ve seen some pretty coloured straps where it works. Or black with black top etc.

EggysMom · 11/07/2019 21:19

Like previous posters, I was brought up in a time when it was not the done thing to show a bra strap; so this latest trend of it not being a problem, jars with me.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 11/07/2019 21:21

I don't mind a bra strap....I wear a lot of slash neck t shirts or baggy jumpers so it's pretty inevitable

I do think all this fancy bra strappage/harness/bridle/whatever the hell they are, are a bit evening wear in a club, so not really suitable for everyday wear

And as for a foosty looking thousand-wash white bra under a backless dress/deep scoop neck line is just not decent!

And those see through plastic straps are no help either...nasty. and sweaty

OpenYourEyes · 11/07/2019 21:26

I hate this! I wonder if some people look in the mirror before they leave the house. It totally ruins the effect of the clothes.

CORSACORSA · 11/07/2019 21:43

No need to show your bra. My 15 yr old DD has shownme phitos of girls the same age as her in lacy toos with bras and boobs on show. Common as muck. They are 15☹️

My DDs would not be allowed out looking like an extra out of Pretty Woman.

namechanged2000 · 11/07/2019 21:44

God I remember buying those really uncomfortable bras with the see through strap at the back so I could wear my dresses "up the dancin" and it wasn't in sight.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 11/07/2019 21:47

I think the straps are fine as long as they are delicate or a pretty colour that matches the outfit

But thats it...you shouldn’t see the band

In my opinion obviously

SolitudeAtAltitude · 11/07/2019 21:49

It can look ok, or it can look awful, depending on the bra and the clothes over it

Remember back in the 90 it was a thing to just wear a (wonder)bra under a blazer?

This is tame by comparison Grin

Dizzywizz · 11/07/2019 21:52

Oh yes @solitudeataltitude, that makes me think of the girls from All saints!

Loveislandaddict · 11/07/2019 21:53

It’s been acceptable for ages, although it can look awful.

However, i’m also of the generation where one-ddn’t-show -their=bras, and to do so was slut-tish.

I still don’t show my bras

Grimbles · 11/07/2019 21:59

OP, do you mean the whole wearing a racer back vest with a standard bra type thing (as an example)?

Nautiloid · 11/07/2019 21:59

These bras have all been of the greying white or grubby nude, industrial strength variety.
If they'd been delicate, I probably wouldn't have noticed.

OP posts:
Nautiloid · 11/07/2019 22:01

Sorry Grimbles, cross posted.
I mean wearing a standard functional, no frills, heavy duty white or nude bra, 2 inch band type of thing with say a strapless crepe maxi dress, with the full band showing at the back, the straps obviously, and an inch or two of the cups visible at the front.

OP posts:
Grimbles · 11/07/2019 22:04

Yeah, I've seen a lot of people doing the racer back with standard bras before so I think we are talking about similar things!

Auldspinster · 11/07/2019 22:05

A woman in late middle age got on my bus yesterday wearing a very low cut maxi dress with about 3 inches of bra cup showing, I did raise my eyebrows a bit.

Passthecherrycoke · 11/07/2019 22:08

If it’s what I’m imagining, I don’t think it’s a trend. It’s just that the dresses aren’t made in a way that makes bra wearing possible. I have large boobs and sometimes you just can’t hide the straps, and strapless bras can often be seen and are usually uncomfortable anyway. Honestly I struggle because my boobs are big but I’m not very (30F, size 10) so my bras are huge scaffold type things but the clothes I wear don’t necessarily cover them. It’s a head scratcher that’s for sure

Passthecherrycoke · 11/07/2019 22:12

“These bras have all been of the greying white or grubby nude, industrial strength variety.”

It doesn’t sound as though the people you describe would be the type to be following a trend 🤣
