Summer dresses with bras showing

Is this a thing now?
Over the last couple of weeks I've seen dozens of women wearing dresses which show their bras.
Not just straps but strapless or low backed dresses with a giant m&s boulder holder with the straps, top of the front and most of the back showing.
When I were a lass Wink that wasn't something I saw anyone do. Is it normal now or do I live in a weird fashion microcosm?

Hahaha the dresses are nice though. And some of my bras leave a lot to be desired...

I don’t like seeing bra straps. Just think it looks slobby. And wearing those see through plastic bra strap
things that were in a couple of years back doesn’t look much better!
It also seems to be a thing to wear coloured bras under white vests. I saw someone the other day with a turquoise one clearly showing.

Ohyesiam · 11/07/2019 22:22

Isn’t it b cause dresses have got skimpier, but people still like to wear a bra?
I used to be a real show off as a youngster Blush, and I really had to search for skimpy clothes. Now my dd has to search for stuff that isn’t revealing. ( so glad she’s not an attention monster like I was).

Yes yes yes. It is offensive On the eye if a grubby grey one but I can’t get upset about a black strap under a black top etc

TinselAndKnickers · 11/07/2019 22:26

Only with common tarts.

😴😴😴

I'm similar to CherryCoke. I have big boobs and going without a bra is not an option. Not found a working strapless bra in my size - actually trying the corset route (surprisingly comfy) in the hope of supporting them without showing a bra. But even then the backs are probably going to be too high - the current cut of clothing is for a low back, even if not obviously so.

I guess what I'm saying is that while I agree it doesn't look nice it may be the only way they can wear the top. Trying to find something that hides bras can be really difficult, I have no doubt that on occasion I've shown more bra than intended. Although I do at least try to have a nice colour if I think I may flash someone!

TescosFinest · 11/07/2019 22:37

I wouldn’t mind delicate bar straps in matching colour. But it does look ugly having the reinforced wide straps of the bra that has long seen better days on show with the supposedly floaty dress. It instantly spoils any summery outfit, sorry. If you don’t own a decent bra/ right sort of bra to go with the dress, then the dress isn’t suitable for wearing. It’s a basic style requirement IMO.

I agree the greying straps or a wide band showing just look wrong poking out of the summer dress.

I don’t see a problem with an ordinary sports bra paired with a racer back.

This is just my opinion, obviously.

IlluminatiConfirmed · 11/07/2019 22:39

I think it's great that we don't need to have a panic attack over bra straps anymore! It's possible of course to create some terrible mismatch of the layers but just wearing bras in a confident, 'to be seen' kind of way like on this picture attached - I think it's wonderful and liberating!

I barely wore bra at all when I was younger, but now that I do, I fully appreciate the more relaxed fashion!

What @Binglebong said
I don't mind my bra straps showing because at a 34K I'm not going braless and strapless don't exist in my size! But I draw the line at grubby bras or showing loads of it, I don't mind the straps being on view, or a harness/cage bra that's designed to show (wore one the other day)

GCAcademic · 11/07/2019 22:43

I agree with PPs who have said that this is an issue with the way a lot of dresses are cut now. I'm really struggling to find summer dresses that you can conceal a bra underneath at the moment.

YesQueen · 11/07/2019 22:44

I've been wearing this a lot recently, the dress is designed so you can't really see bra straps but I was in a harness bra mood Grin

CaptainBrickbeard · 11/07/2019 22:46

I have to wear really big bras with wide straps so I just don’t wear strappy/low back tops or dresses. Even if my bra is a nice colour, the wide straps just spoil the look! I have so, so many little cap sleeve bolero type things to put over tops or dresses to hide bra straps! And I have different colour boob tubes to put on under deep v necks as a modesty band to hide bra cups as well. I think a delicate, pretty bra on show looks great but not a work of engineering like I have to wear!

Chochito · 11/07/2019 22:46

Literally don't care if people see my bra.

HATE it when other women try to touch the straps of my top or dress to cover up my bra. They are always women who annoy me for other reasons too.

BIWI · 11/07/2019 22:46

@Auldspinster

A woman in late middle age got on my bus yesterday wearing a very low cut maxi dress with about 3 inches of bra cup showing, I did raise my eyebrows a bit.

What difference does the woman's age make? Why mention this?

negomi90 · 11/07/2019 23:07

I wear pretty dresses because I like them. I wear reinforced nude/black bras because I'm big and need the support - not wearing them is painful. The delicate pretty bra things, don't support me enough.
I will sometimes wear strappy dresses and ignore the bra straps, or side cuppage.

PurpleCrowbar · 11/07/2019 23:28

I think black, or bold coloured, bras under corresponding coloured tops/dresses are fine. Especially if tshirt bras or crop tops. It's just layering.

Dainty oyster coloured silky nothings which are definitely underwear probably don't need to be on display. Best saved for bedroom antics.

Grubby but sturdy white bras under a pastel coloured strappy dress probably does ruin the vibe a bit.

All of this is why I'm a goth. We just wear moar black & moar straps & all is well 😆.

DogsLoveLakes · 11/07/2019 23:37

Who can even muster up enough energy to have an opinion on someone else’s underwear or whether or not it can/should be seen?

HeronLanyon · 11/07/2019 23:48

dogs you just have ! Confused

TheRLodger · 11/07/2019 23:50

I was dress shopping for a party yesterday. And before price the thing that went through my head was not price but what bra can I wear which won’t show. Ended up buying a lovely dress and this

Not tried the whole outfit on yet but looks promising

myrtleWilson · 11/07/2019 23:55

am not sure I understand what the issue is here... why are we policing women clothes in such a way...

Are you horrified at the sight of underwear - we all (usually) wear it

Are you aghast that it doesn't match the outer clothing - in which case am sure the wearer doesn't really care for your opinion

Are you saying women should meet a certain standard of dress - in which case wtf?

TescosFinest · 11/07/2019 23:58

Illuminati, is it me or does the model in the picture look ‘undressed’ (for want of a better word)?

TBH it borders on uncomfortable level of exposure for me, and that is most definitely outside good taste.

TheJellyBabyMadeMeDoIt · 11/07/2019 23:59

Lovely language being used by some on this thread to describe other women.

"sluts"
"tart"

Delightful.

myrtleWilson · 12/07/2019 00:00

She's on the beach tesco seems quite overdressed to me... Hmm

TescosFinest · 12/07/2019 00:04

Men should also meet some standards of dress. I don’t particularly enjoy the shirtless bare-chested look during the warm weather, for example. Women are free to dress in a slap dash way if that’s what they want, but it doesn’t make such dress pleasing or stylish. I thought that was the point. It grates on the eye, it is not ‘ideal’ objectively. But I guess the wearer doesn’t care, so whatever?
