Can you do a push up?

Just idly wondering how many women can. I’ve been pretty fit in other ways but they’ve always eluded me!

OP posts:
inthebackground · 06/07/2019 22:32

Yeah, I don’t actively train them though

Bezalelle · 06/07/2019 22:33

I can do about three before I collapse spectacularly on the floor in agony.

AlannaOfTrebond · 06/07/2019 22:35

Yep, took me a year of practice though. I can do 10-12 in a row now. Mind you I can also bench press 50kg now too, so that'll help!

Ohdearthefootball · 06/07/2019 22:35

A few but I'm ridiculously crap at them yet can run a marathon!

Tigerbandage · 06/07/2019 22:35

I can do 20, possibly not the best technique, I don’t go to the gym or train
I used to go to the gym about 4 years ago for around 6 months
I seem to have kept the strength so just practice maybe once a week

Ohdearthefootball · 06/07/2019 22:36

Alanna how did you get to that point?

Rystall · 06/07/2019 22:37

No!!! And I’m really strong ! ( can lift v heavy weights etc). Can not do even one proper press up ( arms in the correct position, nose to the ground, body straight). Drives me mad. So I have to do them on my knees 🙄

Can’t be just strength, can it??

ShowOfHands · 06/07/2019 22:38

I can do lots of them. And pull ups.

Took me a while to work out how but it takes practice but also realising they aren't purely an arm exercise. If you're relying solely on your arms, you won't nail it.

Ohyesiam · 06/07/2019 22:38

Yes, but they’re not v impressive. Better with my knees down.

My oh is heavy and much less fit than me , but he can do press ups. I’ve always put it down to his massive shoulders.

EskewedBeef · 06/07/2019 22:40

No. I can't cartwheel either. My arms are the puniest bit of me.

Cobblersandhogwash · 06/07/2019 22:41

No. Can't do them at all.

Pathetic.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 06/07/2019 22:42

Yes I can get to about 6/7 before I splat on my face. Grin I don’t do any exercise and am the heaviest I’ve ever been but I’ve always had arm strength. Had to do lots as a teen for jujitsu and I think my body just remembers.

LakeFlyPie · 06/07/2019 22:45

I proudly quadrupled my previous press up record by pulling off 4 during a PT gym session this week. He tried to get me to do some more in the next round of exercises but the arms / body were neither willing nor able!
My DC (11+8) are astounded that I can't do 30+ non stop like they can

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 06/07/2019 22:47

I have no idea why but I am randomly amazing at push ups. I can do about fifty proper ones. I am shit at everything else in life though.

soulrunner · 06/07/2019 22:48

Yes, and pull ups.

Shenanagins · 06/07/2019 22:49

I can do about 14 in a row, used to be able to do 100 but that was when I was 17!

I built up through planks and half press ups before moving up to full ones.

limesoda · 06/07/2019 22:50

Yep, thanks to body pump classes.

Trees2905 · 06/07/2019 22:50

30 or so before I have to make a lot of noise along with them Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 06/07/2019 22:51

Yes. I can do one.

That’s probably it. I can do more with my knees down, but actual proper full-length ones - not very many. I can’t seem to work out how to engage my tummy muscles properly when I’m doing them.

Runningonempty84 · 06/07/2019 22:52

Yes. Lots. I'm not great at pull ups though.

TheNoodlesIncident · 06/07/2019 22:52

Yes I can. I can also do a bridge (or crab, whatever it's called). DS was impressed but he can do backward rolls, which I can't.

I demonstrated to him how I can touch my toes and made a startling discovery: 1) my legs are only slightly longer than my 10 year old's and 2) I have unfeasibly long arms, thus I can touch my toes without any effort at all, probably as I am built like a baboon.

I had a physical job for a number of years so have muscular arms and shoulders, even years later.

AlannaOfTrebond · 06/07/2019 22:53

Ohdear the press ups was a combo of doing them on my knees and on the kitchen work surface whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. Plus all over strength training so all the supporting muscles can do their part too.

I started doing Body Pump and then got a PT to show me round the weights room and write me a programme. I'm in awe of your running ability, I love a good hike but no way could I do a marathon.

imsuchagrump · 06/07/2019 22:55

Yes a few more with my knees down big I work out a couple of times a week .

fussychica · 06/07/2019 22:56

No but I'm old, mind you I couldnt do them when I was young either!
Can't cartwheels or do handstands but like to think I'm pretty fit for my age and lift weights every morning.

DuesToTheDirt · 06/07/2019 22:56

No. I'm fairly fit and do weights and stuff, but can't do a push up. Years ago DH was trying to help me achieve one, advising on position and stuff...I fell flat on my nose!
