Can you do a push up?

Just idly wondering how many women can. I’ve been pretty fit in other ways but they’ve always eluded me!

Yeees? I usually just do a plank, though, and push ups with my knees down, or against a surface other than a floor, but I can squeeze a few pathetic, shaky "proper" ones.

Soola · 07/07/2019 11:16

Yes I can and I’m in my fifties. I used to be able to do more but am not as fit as I used to be so could probably do 15/20.

As I’ve got older I also prefer a softer look, still slim but not a muscly look as it looks too hard when you’re older.

I concentrate more in being flexible.

JWrecks · 07/07/2019 11:19

Absolutely not. I don't think I've ever managed a single one.

SimonJT · 07/07/2019 11:21

Male, I can do 100 in correct form.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 07/07/2019 11:22

Zillapilla has arms like a Greek statue of a deity!
I can't do proper sit ups. I can do a few if I'm using my knees. And then I collapse in a heap of pain viewing never to be so stupid again.
Bloody fibromyalgia.

lorn195 · 07/07/2019 11:24

Yes. I can do full press ups, but this morning I did about 60 on my knees (as told by our instructor).

BuntyCollocks · 07/07/2019 11:25

Yes, but prefer to do them on my knees because I’m lazy

SamStephens · 07/07/2019 11:28

Yes I can easily do about 10-15 in a row, I can also plank for 3 mins before I buckle and bench press nearly double my weight at 110kg but can’t do a pull up to save my life. Odd how the body works.

ReturnofSaturn · 07/07/2019 11:46

Just one? Yes of course Confused

PlinkPlink · 07/07/2019 11:47

Yes... about 20 maybe, then I start to lose form and have to do the knee ones.

Tricep push ups are the killer though. I can only do about 4 of them before I need a break!

topcat2014 · 07/07/2019 12:59

I can do about 30, in 10's.
male, as it happens

DD has tried to teach me how to do cartwheels, which I would like to be able to do - disaster so far.

Cannot do one pull up though.

topcat2014 · 07/07/2019 13:00

@SimonJT impressive

Crinkle77 · 07/07/2019 13:11

Nope can't do even 1.

Crinkle77 · 07/07/2019 13:13

I think I must have weak wrists though cos I couldn't play tennis one handed either.

bumblenbean · 07/07/2019 13:19

Nope, not a single one on my toes and even on my knees I struggle to do more than 10 or so. Even when I was 7.5 stone I couldn’t do the bloody things (though weirdly could do a pull up) so have no hope now!

cyclingwith3 · 07/07/2019 13:28

I haven’t tried one for years, I was watching a video which prompted it. I’ve been exercising through planks, yoga etc daily and was watching a new video to consider it.

Stupidly after starting this thread I actually tried, I did 3.

Funny how we get things stuck in our heads and don’t try. I had such a strong image of past failure and it felt more recent 😧

SophoclesTheFox · 07/07/2019 13:31

Yep, can do about 20 in a row, good form and on the toes.

I do them every day, though. Waiting for the kettle to boil? 10 press-ups. Ad break? 10 press-ups. Been sitting down for too long? 5 press-ups.

The key is using your whole body- chest, shoulders, core, butt and legs all contribute.

My latest favourite is Spider-Man press-ups, which look v impressive. And I want to be able to do clap ones too, but a ways off that as yet.

But am also incapable of a single crappy pull up 🤣

I can do six in a row. Just six. Nothing more, but I'm happy with those six!

Cecilandsnail · 07/07/2019 15:01

About 15 at a push (pardon pun!), about 25 on my knees. I bought a pullup bar and can do about 15 pullups easily now, couldn't do a single one when I bought it. I climb though so used to pushing and pulling my body with arm and core strength. Could do a lot better though!

ShowOfHands · 07/07/2019 18:29

@SophoclesTheFox I love spiders and can do 2 pitiful clap press ups. My next challenges are a dragon flag and walking on my hands.

Missillusioned · 07/07/2019 18:41

Nope. Not with good form anyway. It is much more difficult for a woman to do press ups and pull ups than a man, as men have much stronger arms and shoulders, even when body weight is accounted for.

An average untrained man can usually do a few press ups or pull ups, but a woman usually has to train to be able to do so. Although there are some women with a more muscular body type that this doesn't apply to.

Stravapalava · 07/07/2019 18:45

I can do 3 "proper" ones (on my toes, with my arms in the correct position) or 5/6 with my bent knees on the ground & feet in the air. I find them really really hard!

SophoclesTheFox · 07/07/2019 21:02

Very cool, showofhands Grin

I can get my hands off the floor, but not for long enough to clap...too afraid of a face plant!

shitpark · 07/07/2019 21:06

Yes
I've been able to do them since I first tried aged 10. Did a lot of sports through out childhood including gymnastics, athletics, volleyball etc. so probably have always had good upper body strength
