Just seen on the news that Harry and Meghan will not release any details of Archie’s godparents

What does everyone think? The papers seem really annoyed by their decision to keep Archie’s godparents secret. I’m not sure what to think. I don’t think it would hurt to let the public know these details and to see the christening party arrive at church.

If they release the names of the godparents, and it’s not William and catherine, then it will be made into a huge ‘thing’ by the press. I suspect they know that.

Their baby, their choice.

He won’t because anyone giving up their place in line would cause a major scandal that would seriously damage the monarchy. Harry’s had loyalty drummed into him since birth

Oh please. He enjoys the fame/status. No he would not be a huge star if he abdicated. The only reason he’s so revered is precisely because he’s a Prince. No one would care if he wasn’t.

Maybe it's the godparents themselves who wish not to be all over the press? Presumably they are adults who may well have decided that for themselves?

Can't remember who it was but there was someone who knows them well who summed it up for me the other day.

They have to be very careful how they continue to play this line. Lectures on the environment and then aeroplanes to Birmingham and then this on the back of the release of tye cost of the renovations (which are ongoing). There has been a bit of hypocrisy coming from the Sussex camp recently. It is seeming they want their cake and eat it.

They could have had the christening then released the pictures, rather than announcing they are having it, guests are secret, godparents are secret and a couple of pictures will be released later.

I like them, but I think they have been getting a bit of bad advice recently.

No one. But it provides an occasion for today’s round of Meghan-bashing. You can see the glee with which certain people indulge above. Of course, if the names were released, that would be seized on as such an opportunity too.

I'm American and I genuinely find it hard to give a damn about Meghan. I had no idea who she was before she dated Harry and I find the entire debacle boring. The Cambridges are infinitely more interesting and accessible. Let Harry and Meghan alienate the public. Who cares?

People saying 'become a private citizen' ... Archie is a private citizen. He's not titled and he won't be funded in adulthood or a working Royal

Are you sure? Aren’t the minor royals still funded in part by the tax payer? I know Beatrice and Eugene are but aren’t the others as well?

@Hithere12 Well Zara etc aren't funded at all. They have their own incomes. Nor do they carry out royal duties.

The assumption is that Archie will be the same, as he's not titled and far down the line of succession.

Why money Zara makes is due to her fame as the granddaughter of the Queen. She trades off it at every turn. Bit of a well-worn myth that Anne’s children are private citizens who have made their way on their own.

I think the ''trying to have it both ways'' assessment is a little unfair because while the papers are mad for whatever they do right now, they are probably looking at Andrew stamping his foot looking for Beatrice and Eugenie to have roles. They see how quickly you go from right there at the royal trough to peripheral and asking your brother, and then your nephew for a piece of the pie.

They are smart enough to protect their child from being the new Andrew.

Zara Tindall and Peter Philips aren't. Too early to say on Edward's children as they are too young but likely the answer will be that they aren't.

Beatrice and Eugenie exist in some sort of middle zone as Andrew wanted them to be Princesses and have royal protection - which then turned out to basically prevent them from having jobs, a problem he hadn't thought of as he had wanted them to be Royals.

Beatrice supposedly works fulltime in New York but it's the sort of fulltime job that allows her lots of holidays and to go to all the royal engagements. Eugenie's job is similarly accommodating - the rest of us can only dream.

They have come in for their own stick for being endlessly on holiday or being photographed at parties but this seems to have eased off now Meghan has taken over as the favorite hate figure.

I don't care one way or another. It will be in the news after the Christening. Maybe it isn't actually a secret, merely they haven't announced the names of Godparents yet. When we do find out who Godparents of royal babies are, do we remember their names down the line? I'd certainly have to be reminded.

No problem, hope they're paying their own security, oh whilst they're at it, pay back the £2.4 million of taxpayers money to do up their house. They don't want the public to have fuck all to do with their lives. Stand down from office immediately. Most normal folk will not wish to pay for their private luxurious lifestyle. I'm amazed that some people think this is acceptable behaviour from people whose very lives are funded by hard working taxpayers.
