Does? I'm in a few facebook groups and in nearly everyone, " dose anyone know a recipe" or " dose anyone know a good film" I so want to correct that one word, but that doesn't make you many friends Grin

Maybe it was all about eating lots of chocolate?

ImpracticalCape · 04/07/2019 20:27

I had to slam on the breaks just to get a sneak peak. Que me telling him the heals were not to be put on the dinning table

Lovestonap · 04/07/2019 20:44

probably because of my line of work, but you go and see a counsellor to get some counselling. A councillor will only be useful if you have a town-planning issue.....

Accountant222 · 04/07/2019 21:47

Gawgus hon, just gawgus ..... grrrh

midsomermurderess · 04/07/2019 21:50

Not spelling but basic grammar, the God awful 'myself'. I always read it in Hyacinth Bucket strangulated tones of refinement.

flossie86 · 04/07/2019 21:54

I have a cousin who once messaged me because she knows I love fish/seafood and asked me were 'sour deans' nice Hmm it's probably my all time favourite spelling mistake to this day

HoobleDooble · 04/07/2019 22:05

I 'defiantly' blame Girls Aloud for people not being able to use the word 'allowed' correctly. I also have a friend who spends a lot of time 'wondering' around her garden.

littlebillie · 04/07/2019 22:12

Dumbing down of language

Pavlova31 · 04/07/2019 22:49

Aswell rather than as well.
Referring to a woman in the singular as women.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 05/07/2019 09:01

Here here 😀😀

moonpiggle · 05/07/2019 09:32

Shouldn't take the piss really but it is annoying! I hate it when people spell suede as 'swade' on selling sites! Or 'pacific' instead of 'specific' arrrrrghhhh....fucking annoying!!

LaMarschallin · 05/07/2019 09:43

Been said so many times on here, but the "would of" "could of" "should of" etc thing kills me.

Partly because I have the horrible feeling it will become the norm as so many people use it. And it makes no sense!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 05/07/2019 09:53

I have seen "upmost" on MN a lot recently, instead of "utmost".

edwardcullensotherwoman · 05/07/2019 10:14

I had a booklet from DS's new school this week, with a list of support staff. They have 2 "councillors" onsite if students need someone to talk to Hmm

Also went to a popular tourist attraction recently where there was a section closed off, because "our wizard's are working their magic" Confused

I don't buy the poor education argument - people are on social media every day and seeing plenty of correct spellings so there's no excuse.

bigKiteFlying · 05/07/2019 11:00

I don't buy the poor education argument - people are on social media every day and seeing plenty of correct spellings so there's no excuse.

I have a tendency to pick up mistakes - so mistakes being so common doesn't help me at all.

Though reading so much as a child probably has helped me pick up many common saying with reins come from horse references so I could pick correct one there other areas like spelling it made little impact on.

I do wonder how I got through uni not knowing about could of being wrong - it sounds same in my accent but it’s more no-one pointed it out to me – probably silently judged.

As an adult I've improved my grammar and spelling - grammar as I became aware of big holes in my understanding.

But the main reason my kids know that it’s wrong is because I’ve sat down and done spelling and grammar work with them.

So I do think it’s an education issue where we are at least – maybe it’s improved in England since I was young.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/07/2019 11:03

There's a huge amount of spelling and grammar work going on in schools now (maybe too much too young ) so we'll see the results of that very soon.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 05/07/2019 11:22

I do quite often cringe when scrolling through social media (Facebook tends to be the worst). I think people just don’t proofread anymore.
Although I do confess that I often get in a muddle between affect and effect. I know that in the noun sense it will usually be effect (like special effects) but I can never remember in the verb sense, so normally give up and use impact instead.

DarlingNikita · 05/07/2019 11:26

God, I hate basically all of these.

I work with books and it fucks me off royally when I have to correct the spelling and grammar of so-called professional editorial people who've been EMPLOYED and PAID to know how to spell and to know some grammar and then get it wrong.

aposterhasnoname · 05/07/2019 11:29

Oh god, my Facebook is full of people getting as and has mixed up. Dozens of posts along the lines of “has I’m going on holiday tomorrow as anyone got a taxi number”

If it was one person, or a one off, fair enough, but it’s several people doing it all the time.

I’m largely not bothered about spelling and grammar, I’m far from perfect myself, but that one makes my eyes hurt.
