Fucking Ryan Air! FFS!

Email from Ryan Air yesterday at 1pm - did you know our hold baggage allowance is absolutely miniscule so if you want to bring a standard sized wheel-on case you have to book priority booking and pay an extra amount starting from £8.00?

Ok, so I logged on to do that tonight at 5pm. Website says No - Sold Out.

What the frig am I supposed to do now?

I flew recently with Ryanair, they couldn't have been clearer about the bag dimensions and restrictions, we received several emails in the weeks before our flight to let us know. For our trip in October I have booked 10kg bags in the hold for £12 each way - I'm very happy with that.

Sodding flybe charged us £50 for a bag that seemed ok one direction but not the other.

Raylas · 03/07/2019 07:06

It's not really Ryanairs fault if you didn't read the bag info when you booked. It's all there, plastered across the website and confirmation emails.

AgathaF · 03/07/2019 07:07

I can't see how you'd have missed this either. The information is there in black and white all the way through the booking process then on countless emails afterwards.

We recently flew with them and I'd say 95% of the passengers had booked priority for the baggage allowance, and also to get on first so that there was space in the overheads for their luggage. Just a few passengers non-priority.

We also flew back with them from Greece a couple of years ago, when they had to go around people at the departures gate requesting that people booked their cabin luggage in as hold luggage because the flight was full and there wasn't enough room in the overheads for all of the cabin bags. They didn't charge people for this though, and they easily could have done.

Personally, I think those people that try to get away with bringing larger bags on as cabin luggage are amongst those who have made them take this decision. If people just followed the instructions regarding bag size there would be less of a problem. Really annoys me when I see people with oversized bags in the cabin when others of us have paid to put similar sized bags in the hold.

mathanxiety · 03/07/2019 07:15

Gonna cram it all in a 30l fucksack. They aren't getting a penny extra out of me the fekkers.

Can I just say I really admire your fighting spirit Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/07/2019 07:17

Ryanair are upfront about their baggage allowance at the booking stage, you skipped the important information. It's the price you pay for really cheap tickets I'm afraid.

There are ways round it. Have you tried vacuum packing your stuff? You can massively reduce the volume by doing this, Poundland sell vacuum bags if you need on cheap and in a hurry, they aren't brilliant but will get you there. Otherwise Lakeland for more robust options. If what you're packing is mainly clothes you'd be surprised how much this will squash down.

If you're flying back with Easyjet there won't be a problem although remember you can only carry one bag on which has to include your handbag, but there's no weight limit.

DonkeyHohtay · 03/07/2019 07:20

We flew with easyJet on Friday and they were similarly strict about bags. £50 to check one in. Employee at the gate announced to everyone that there wasn't enough space for everyone to have a cabin bag, anyone with more than one bag would have one taken and charged £50 for checking it in and that once the overhead lockers were full, all other bags would be taken and checked in ( without paying). No discussion.

People take the piss. They won't pay to check luggage so try to get away with as big a case as possible. They argue with gate staff. They dint think the rules apply to them.

EasyJet were clear - if your bag doesn't fit into our little metal cage thing for size, you're paying. Or not flying. Your choice.

Oh and we didn't pay to choose seats. They were automatically allocated when we checked in online. (And we got 5 all together)

LadyRannaldini · 03/07/2019 07:21

You had the opportunity to buy it originally, I find that reading the thing properly when I'm booking avoids problems later!

Karwomannghia · 03/07/2019 07:22

I’m flying in 2-3 weeks and haven’t had a single email since booking! We’ve got one checking in bag and plan to take the rest in the allowable hand luggage but I’m panicking now.

No, it's the price you pay for not paying attention when you were booking! Passing the buck for one's own mistakes seems to be a national sport!

AguerosAngel · 03/07/2019 07:29

We always fly with RyanAir and have never had any issues at all, even once we were a kilo overweight flying out we were nice to the check in staff and we weren’t charged, follow their rules, check the costs and sort your baggage/seats etc out at the time of booking and you won’t have issues.

It’s been well documented since last year that their cabin bag policy has changed.

Millie2018 · 03/07/2019 07:29

Definitely stuff it all into a fucksack.

rookiemere · 03/07/2019 07:36

Actually just thinking my friend bought a load of handbags when we were away and had an extra bag. When she asked about it at the airport it was only £20 more and this was Ryanair - I was pleasantly surprised as thought they would gouge her on costs

AllBirthdaysMatter · 03/07/2019 07:37

As much as I try to avoid RyanAir when possible, but sadly they have exclusivity on some lines, I salute any airline who put a stop on ridiculous hand luggage allowance!

I am sick and tired of people dragging a flipping suitcase and try to take all the space in the overhead lockers and the crew try to make you put your reasonably sized bag on the floor.

rookiemere · 03/07/2019 07:40

I agree allbirthdaysmatter and it's so much more relaxing flying if you can get rid of your case as soon as you get to the airport and makes security less challenging.

bellinisurge · 03/07/2019 07:43

Get what you pay for. I'm old and have flown loads. All flights are pretty utilitarian these days, some more than others. Check the not very small print; Pay for the extras if you can; stop whining.
Whine about delays etc by all means but not the comfort of a cheap short haul flight.

chipsnmayo · 03/07/2019 07:44

I always feel sorry for the cabin crew trying to cram everything into the overhead lockers.

I flew with Air NZ recently where its pretty much free reign when it comes to hand luggage, so many bulky suitcases, bags of alcohol from duty free, weird ornaments etc. Times like that I support Ryanair.

And I like Ryanair in that you can get cheap flights by avoiding in-flight meals, extra luggage etc.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 03/07/2019 07:44

Does the airport Boots offer click & collect?

Karwomannghia · 03/07/2019 07:54

I just went to our booking to add a 10kg bag but the only option was to add it for all 5 of us, costing £200 extra. So I think we’ll just take a 10kg hold one on the day and pay the £20 for it to go in the hold.

sacope · 03/07/2019 07:57

I think all airlines should restrict cabin baggage to small handbags only (unless medical needs obviously) that way in the event of an emergency people could just leave the aircraft instead of dicking about and putting others at risk.

LizzieLookAtTheFlowers · 03/07/2019 08:01

I was once at an awards do and the guest speaker was Michael O'Twatface and he was literally the vilest thing I've ever seen. Gloating about making his fortunes "people ask if we carry rich people on our budget airline, and yes we do all the time. I flew on one today and I am loaded." and regurgitating his hilarious jokes about it not mattering whether the customer is right they still aren't getting a refund 'so fuck off' and considering putting coin slots on the toilet doors. Pretty sure he would if it wasn't a legal requirement to provide toilet facilities for people.

Anyway. We are also flying Ryanair later his year. A hold bag is £15 each way if booked in advance which is cheap compared to other airlines. It was £16 return for the cabin bags we booked but they were only 10kg.

Priority boarding means nothing if you have prebooked seats anyway.

Frazzled2207 · 03/07/2019 08:01

I'm curious how you didn't notice it when booking. It gives you the various options then.

It was a few months ago but when I took a rucksack on board they didn't bat an eyelid. The problem is everyone turning up with wheely suitcases, there simply isn't space for them all on board so they have to limit.

Squishy rucksacks that can go underneath the seat in front aren't so much of an issue. Can't guarantee you'll get away with it though. You might have to prove that it can be squished into a special box.

Sexnotgender · 03/07/2019 08:03

I just flew with Ryanair and they were great. They’re totally upfront about all their costs. If you didn’t read them then that’s hardly Ryanair’s fault.

Karwomannghia · 03/07/2019 08:04

Our hold bag was booked way in advance and a 20kg bag was £40 not £15.

MrsGrindah · 03/07/2019 08:08

@GilbertA@ I can afford to pay, I just think it’s nonsense that certain soft drinks are free from the “free” trolley but not when they are doing the alcoholic drinks round...even if you get the same thing.
