I got fat shamed last night

To be fair, I am fat, so they weren’t wrong but do I really deserve to be shouted at in the street for it?

I had such a fab night out last night with a new group of friends. I walked home by myself around 11pm and some horrible people driving past shouted nasty comments to me and really spoiled my happy mood.

Now as well as nursing a hangover, I feel miserable about myself. I am already doing slimming world and have lost 1.5st.

It's horrible but don't feel bad...I'm not fat but have been shouted at fat and ugly etc. As pp have said some vile creatures will say anything to hurt or upset others.

It’s nothing to do with you being overweight. You should try to not worry about it. Unfortunately there are plenty of nasty people about who get a kick out of upsetting people. They are some on Mumsnet. 😕

I like to think there are more nice people about than horrible people.

Yup, as many others have said, you can cure pork, but you can't cure stupid.

I don't feel sorry for them - I feel contempt for them. It's the sense of entitlement of sunburnt "Lads" who haven't pulled that night and the world hasn't treated with the deference they think they deserve, I suspect - looking to pay it forward.
Knobs, in other words.
Lose weight because you want to, but not to appease wankers.

My comment was aimed at the poster who raised the question about it being men.

It was pretty obvious it was men. We are all familiar enough with this type of abuse to know who is doing it. Why shouldn’t that question be asked?

Whilst I think women on the whole can be far more critical and nasty about other women's appearances, they tend not to shout out of car windows.

It makes me so angry that people think it's ok to behave like this.

Just be glad you're you, and not the kind of wankers who find it funny to shout abuse at lone women at night. I know which person I'd rather be.

Sorry to hear about your evening being tainted by that abuse. However, toxic males will scream standard abuse at women out of sheer misogyny, often regardless of your actual appearance. I have had men shout similar abuse at me for refusing to acknowledge their advances despite being average size. Despite their Neanderthal brains, they know that the vast majority of women have some kind of hang-up or other about their bodies and often use an indiscriminate scatter gun approach of insults, hoping something will 'hit home'. And sadly, it often does. But these sad sacks really do not matter. You are a tall noble tree and they are just dirty pigs trying to piss on your roots. @Soola street harassment is almost always men, let's face it.

I'd echo pp who said that it's often not actually about you. I had people shout 'fat slut' at me as a skinny teenager. It's about trying to get control and power.

@Soola we’re not talking about men or women being nasty overall - but it is men who shout abuse from cars and not women.

I’ve been catcalled and shouted at from cars/vans numerous times over the years at it is is always from men, no exceptions.

OP, be sad for those men that this is the best they could do to make them feel better about themselves. What sad, pathetic little men they must be. It’s no reflection on you - just them.

If it wasn't your weight, it would be something else. These sad fucks have nothing going on in their lives so they need to act the big man to feel like they matter.

I've had shit shouted at me in the street too and I'm slim. They will just say anything.

I know it hurts more when it feels personal but just imagine how much of a pathetic arsehole you need to be to think that is somehow cool behaviour. It's really sad.

It's a horrible feeling, I'm sorry they were such arseholes. Try to forget about it, twats that shout things out of cars/vans or whilst crossing the street are just twats, I've had horrible comments and been honked at before when I used to pick my son up from school, we went past a busy road so I guess made it more likely to go past idiots!

I'm nearly 50 years old and in the almost 40 years I've been obviously female it's been SOLELY men who have yelled 'nice tits/smile love/sit on my face' and every other version of street calls.

HUNDREDS of times over the years - literally hundreds

The most I've ever had from a woman was an addict trying to start a fight with me ONCE!

It's horrible when shit like this happens. I've had various shit shouted at me over the years. Always seems to be when you're obviously on the way out for the evening though for me.

There was one occasion I was off out, fresh out the hairdressers, make up had gone on perfect and some bloke slowed his car down while I was waiting to cross and his passenger spat a load of liquid into my face. I would like to say I fronted it out and carried on with my night but it crushed me and I went home. I felt vulnerable.

This is nothing to do with you OP and everything about them Flowers

A friend and I had this happen one day when we attempted a jog, but these were cheeky wee whatevers going past on their bikes. Quick as a flash my friend shouted back, "I ken yer mam" and the look of horror on their faces made us roar.
But they were still schoolboys, it's pathetic grown men get their jollies like that.

People are just dicks in groups and/or drunk as well and showing off. I've been shouted at by a group of guys in a car because of my disability. Was absolutely humiliating what they said. I hope you're okay op, don't let a few fools affect you.
