Sweet or savoury. I'm fascinated by the different foods that are available in the U.K and Ireland(or elsewhere) and being a greedy guts I'm keen to sample them.

What delights are specific to your area?

Regarding pea wet a colleague when I was working asked me to get her chips, gravy, scraps and pea wet from the chippy when I was doing a chippy run I live in Bolton so not far from Wigan buy I don't think it's a thing here?

Al203 · 30/06/2019 11:29

In my Sainsbury’s Local I can get -

Kendal Mint Cake
Cornish pasties
Argentinian corned beef
Swiss Toblerone
Rice from Italy

SingingLily · 30/06/2019 12:05

x2boys, my DH is a proud Boltonian and remembers asking for pea wet, although he pronounces it "pay wet". He says Ye Olde Pasty Shoppe sells the finest pasties in the world. If only they delivered...

He's homesick now as well Grin

x2boys · 30/06/2019 12:35

Yes right @SingingLilly I went last week actually , the cheese and onion pasties are my favourite Grin

x2boys · 30/06/2019 12:35

He,s right*

SingingLily · 30/06/2019 12:37

Stop boasting, x2boys! Next time you're in, could you ask they'd do mail order? 😂

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/06/2019 12:40

The only one I don't think has been mentioned are peach melbas, in the north east.
I live near Glasgow now and love pizza crunch and Munchy boxes

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/06/2019 12:40

Chicken boxes
Turnover buns
Chips cheese and taco

Just a list of things my family in England miss from home lol

SingingLily · 30/06/2019 12:50

I just have to ask, Tryingtoworkitoutagain - what are tobacco onions???

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/06/2019 12:51

I want to know too, and chicken boxes

Lessstressedhemum · 30/06/2019 12:53

Ah, pizza crunch! My kids (all adult) think this is a tremendous treat food. They love it. I find even the very idea of it completely revoltingGrin

I love a mother's pride outside slice toasted. It's the Queen of bread, much better than the plastic Donny T bread the kids like.

My Ds1 and his wife live in England. Every time they one home, I have to cook slice, proper black pudding, Ayrshire bacon and potato scones for them.

Other well known local food would be
Beef
Lamb
Beer
Whisky, particularly arran single malt. Johnny Walker used to have a distillery here but it closed. Grants still make whisky and gin here.
Stovies
Shorts pies
Award winning ice cream
Fish, straight from Troon harbour fish market
Game meat

But probably the best known food phenomenon would be the munchie box. You either love it or hate it, but it is renowned in this area and all take away places have their own version.
There's a farm very near here that makes its own chocolates and ice cream from their own milk and runs classes teaching folk how to do it themselves.

stucknoue · 30/06/2019 12:55

It's mostly Stilton and pork pies around here, I'm an incomer and haven't come across any full meals that are local.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/06/2019 12:55

New year's day steak pie is a big thing here too, I put links in mine but lots of people don't

homeless1234 · 30/06/2019 12:55

SpanielPlusToddler · 30/06/2019 13:20

@homeless1234 I think we must live near each other! I posted at the top of page 5!

Tryingtoworkitoutagain · 30/06/2019 13:33

I have actually never made them however eat them out all the time - I googled them and this is as close as I can get - allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/17305/tobacco-onions.aspx

Chicken box - it’s a box from the chipper with chips, chicken, onions, peppers, cheese & 3 sauces - usually I get taco, garlic and chilli. You can also get rice in them. They do it with steak too except you get tobacco onions and pepper sauce in it - might get that tonight actually

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/06/2019 13:39

I know what haslet is, Asda sell it, but what is stuffed chine?
The tobacco onions sound delicious, as does the chicken box if you leave the peppers off, I hate peppers

SingingLily · 30/06/2019 13:44

Oh no! DH is dreaming now of sizzling steak and tobacco onions. In this weather? Seriously? Smile

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 30/06/2019 13:55

Oh my word yes! Parmo! Food of the Gods. A good pork pie, will just say petches do the best. I'm going to have to Google some of these 😁
