What have you splurged on that has been worth every penny?

Recently bought a MacAir which is a thing of beauty and wonder. Am also gradually replacing cheap crockery with lovely Denby stuff.

I now buy good quality bras instead of M&S and more 'high end' makeup.

So I'm not talking houses, cars, horses etc. What have you bought/upgraded that you love so much more than the cheaper version and has been good value?

Dyson cordless vac

Thequaffle · 02/07/2019 19:32

And a tummy tuck!!

DoveOfPiss · 02/07/2019 22:31

My bassoon. I bought it on a whim about 15 years ago and it took me 5 years to pay off my credit card from it. I don't play it as often as I'd like but sometimes I get it out of the case and stroke it lovingly...

Nesti Dante Il Frutteto soap - smells divine, costs a fiver a bar but they're so massive they last for ages. I keep one in my pants drawer like my mum used to have lavender bags!!

Always buy the kids Clarks shoes, properly measured, in late August for back to school. They usually last until about Whitsun half term then they get a cheap pair until they break up in July.

My brother bought me an Anya Hindmarch handbag a few years ago which when I googled it, was worth £500!! I hate it, it's massive and garishly coloured. I'd love to sell it but haven't worked up the courage yet.

Oh, and I'm about to spend an obscene amount of money on a tattoo sleeve from an artist I've admired the work of for years and I know will look phenomenal. Am leaving instructions in my will for it to be flayed off me, framed and pinned out like a butterfly in a collection when I'm dead!!

Beamur · 02/07/2019 22:34

My cat. He was a bit pricey but is worth it. His lovely fluffy kitty chum was from a rescue and was a bargain.
Both of them make my life better.

soupmaker · 02/07/2019 22:44

Our king size mattress, cost a four figure sum. Still like new after 10 years.

My Bose headphones. Love them.

MissingDietCoke · 02/07/2019 22:58

Mulberry Bayswater. Only handbag I've carried daily for the last 8 years. Cost per wear must be pennies by now.
Microbladed eyebrows, as others say.
MacBook Air. Had one from 2006, eventually died in 2017, bought a windows laptop as just couldn't justify a new one. Loathed it, bought a new MacBook this year even though I still couldn't justify it really. Love it.

Absolutely love this thread, persuaded me to step up my search for a new mattress!

longwayoff · 02/07/2019 22:59

I've just bought a 'country, wide wingchair' which is an armchair a few inches wider than most. My dog will be able to sit alongside me, instead of on me, and we will live in mutual bliss. Even better, £95 off in the sale. Arriving soon, hurrah.

MissingDietCoke · 02/07/2019 23:07

Oooh, also a reclining sofa. Tacky, maybe. Evenings spent it total comfort and sofa naps on a Sunday mean I couldn't care less.
Moved into our house 8 years ago and lived with the old lady lounge while we prioritised kids rooms, kitchen, bathrooms etc. After years and years of saving hard and 3 months of living in chaos it is EXACTLY how I want it, no scrimping on anything, made to measure furniture etc etc. It is everything I wanted and it makes me happy every single day.

BitOfFun · 02/07/2019 23:20

Oh yes, squishee, I love that stuff!

clucky3 · 03/07/2019 06:59

Bose noise cancelling headphones - life changing. My commute is infinitely less stressful in my little soundproof bubble. I didn't know I needed them till I tried someone else's on.

Kerastase shampoo and conditioner

More expensive sunglasses - not mega money. I spent 40 quid on a pair from Costco and I love them. They have lasted so much better than high st ones that I've paid a tenner for in the past.

Boden clothes in the sale

A coach handbag. I have one but may be hooked.

The main luxury for me is nice holidays. It's dawned on me as I've aged that I don't have a good time on holiday if I don't sleep well. So for me, that means holidays every 2-3 years rather than every year, but in lovely hotels with amazing big beds, rather than normal hotels or apartments with normal double beds.

megletthesecond · 03/07/2019 07:09

Lumie sunrise alarm.
It seemed like a shocking amount of money, £70, when I bought it 7 years ago. I haven't even had to change the bulb yet.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 03/07/2019 08:10

The MN favourite - my instant pot. Got it in Amazon prime day. Even then, not cheap. Totally worth it though, it gets used loads and I like how one of my favourite curries can be cooked in under an hour when I used to have to prep it at lunch time and then slow cook for hours.
My Kenwood chef titanium. Bloody expensive even at sale price, but it's brilliant. Most of the accessories are dishwasher safe too. It has a pasta making doohickey that makes me think of playdoh!
The expense corner cupboards we chose when we re did our kitchen. Nifty sliding baskets so you can use all the space. Probably about 1/3 the total cost of the kitchen but utterly worth it. Still working well after 7 years too!
The very powerful graphics card on our pc. Yes DH and I are total geeky gamers. Even though this card is a few years old now it's still coping well.

RingtheBells · 03/07/2019 08:31

Bodum knife block, it looks good and I can get loads of knifes in it, one of my better kitchen buys.

www.bodum.com/gb/en/11089-913s-bistro

You can get them off eBay and Amazon for about £30

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 03/07/2019 09:02

To the PPs who like good butter, I buy President unsalted which is lovely. However, for even better butter, try Isigny sur Mer - Waitrose usually have it, but I get my DH to stock up when he goes to France. It freezes well and is even creamier than President!

My splurge was an Omega Constellation watch with diamonds round the edge - I have had it nearly 10 years, wear it every day and it still looks like new.

CasparMum · 03/07/2019 11:11

John Smedley knitwear (I get it in the sale or from their clearance site). It lasts for years, doesn’t pill and washes in the machine. Plus it looks fabulous and comes in some lovely colours. Full priced it does make your eyes water though.

Treefloof · 03/07/2019 13:00

God this thread is costing a bomb, thanks for all your recommendations though. The bedding ones especially. But also a lot of clothing ones.

Hadenough4 · 03/07/2019 13:47

@ChippingInLowCarbing, can I ask how expensive the water softener was as I've been considering one, and it would be good to have a ballpark figure. You can always pm me it, if you don't want to put it on here. Thanks.

sueelleker · 03/07/2019 13:48

MilkTrayLimeBarrel I love the Isigny crème fraiche. And the little pots with clip-on lids are very useful for storage!

MrsHardbroom · 03/07/2019 14:52

An electric Aga. It's the best thing ever.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/07/2019 17:23

Loving some of the latest replies, especially the very happy dog in a nice new chair.

I love my robo vacuum, I flick all the crumbs onto the floor and it’s cleans while I wipe round.

Wish list;
Non-electric water softener, pricier than electric ones though.
Steam mop.

BlueSkiesLies · 03/07/2019 18:37

BlueSkiesLies · 03/07/2019 18:38

candlefloozy · 03/07/2019 19:57

@MissingDietCoke we have reclining sofas and I totally agree with you. Game changer!!

BeyondMyWits · 04/07/2019 07:52

our reclining sofas have phone charging ports in the arm by the button to recline - bliss.
