What have you splurged on that has been worth every penny?

Recently bought a MacAir which is a thing of beauty and wonder. Am also gradually replacing cheap crockery with lovely Denby stuff.

I now buy good quality bras instead of M&S and more 'high end' makeup.

So I'm not talking houses, cars, horses etc. What have you bought/upgraded that you love so much more than the cheaper version and has been good value?

Molton Brown Rose & Rhubarb room smellie

I didn't realise they did it a home fragrance, I love the hand wash and lotion.

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 01/07/2019 16:10

Recliner sofa. That 'aaah' moment when I can sit down and really put my feet up is priceless! and a reminder I'm not as young as I once was

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/07/2019 17:35

Thanks Skinny. I will probably buy an All Saints biker jacket ready for autumn.

Well my new coffee maker came today. Inspired by this thread! I am now a little poorer but I never need to go to Costas again Grin

I have another one to add, my portable air con! As a regular on the "we hate summer" thread it is completely priceless to me.

VivaJen · 01/07/2019 18:16

Absolutely love this thread!

For me my sonic toothbrush has been worth every penny, bought for about £200 a couple of years ago and has made such a difference to my teeth.

Totally agree with getting a decent bed. I adore my Sealy mattress and we saved for ages when we were doing up the house.

My Lakeland DrySoon airer has made such a difference, I've never felt confident putting clothes in the tumble dryer and this means I can dry a load of washing overnight. No more hanging clothes over radiators.

I remember when i bought my first high thread count sheet and the sales assistant asked if I had used them before when I said no she said you'll never go back - totally right. I like Christy and Sheridan and if you wait until sale time you can get some good reductions. The White Company also do excellent ones.

My LeCruset cast iron pieces are fantastic, I also bought the non stick pots and pans and they are like new 7 years later.

For everyone that has mentioned Proper Butter, what brands do you like?

Hadenough4 · 01/07/2019 18:21

This sounds like heaven:
MissingInActionYouSay
"My roof garden. It is 3x3m and opens from my bedroom. It has been an expensive labour of love making it usable, but after 3 years I have wisteria, several jasmine plants and loads of bee friendly plants and flowers. I have a hammock out there and its just total and absolute bliss to read a book in the sun. total privacy too as I am not overlook as its on the 3rd floor. A few hours out there is as good as a holiday."

My best beauty purchase is Benton's Snail Bee high content essence. Gross (I hate snails) but my god, not a blemish since I started using it - it's incredible! Must never run out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/07/2019 18:35

Proper butter - I tend to go for President or Lurpak.

So glad I started this thread. I'm finding it fascinating (and am having to sit on my hands to stop buying nearly everything on it!).

BestIsWest · 01/07/2019 18:39

I usually get Lurpak but then I remember how delicious President is. Mmm.

EggplantVestibule · 01/07/2019 18:41

My piano. We deliberated over whether to buy one or not, but we went for it and it is without doubt my most favourite possession in the world. I only wish we'd bought it years before we did.

happytobemrsg · 01/07/2019 18:42

We splurged on getting a remote-controlled awning fitted to the back of our house. Cost about £3500 when you add all the fancy lights etc. A parasol would have been much cheaper but the awning is just amazing. It covers a much bigger area (my whole decking), doesn’t need moving when the sun moves & I actually use it all year round as it cuts out the winter sun into our kitchen in the mornings (East facing garden). Had a garden party the other day & it started to lightly spit - my guests didn’t even notice as they were sitting under the awning. It’s spf 50 so it’s great when DC are playing on the deck. My dad (who is notoriously difficult to please) said it really makes the garden an extension of the kitchen. When standing the kitchen the awning blocks everything out so all I see is my lovely garden it’s like a little private oasis. Definitely a splurge but worth every single penny.

happytobemrsg · 01/07/2019 18:45

Oh & adding air con to our new bedroom (loft conversion). It’s been a life save this weekend alone!

VivaJen · 01/07/2019 18:51

Forgot to add, this thread has made me feel a whole lot better about spending a ridculous amount on wellies last week. I have got through 2 pairs in the last 2 years and I decided to do some research so I went for Le Chameau. I have never spent so much on footwear in my entire life but I wear wellies pretty much every day from Autumn right through to Spring. I'm asking all my family to chip in towards them for my birthday in 2 weeks!

BikeRunSki · 01/07/2019 18:56

Remote controlled roller shutter garage door. Much better security for the many bikes, much easier fir putting the bikes away after a ride, keeps the bedroom above much warmer. Looks really neat too.

BarbarAnna · 01/07/2019 18:57

I am really liking the sound of that awning @happytobemrsg I was talking about the exact same thing at the weekend in lieu of an extension we have vaguely been thinking about. Are you able to link to a picture of something similar?

BarbequeWeather · 01/07/2019 19:01

An independent architect. We could have gone with one that is affiliated to the builder but he's come up with a creative solution to our request.

Also was very honest that what we originally wanted would not work without significant disruption but made independent enquiries regardless.

We haven't had the work done yet but having previously been sceptical I am a convert! (And in the grand scheme of things, he's pretty reasonable)

wishingchair1 · 01/07/2019 19:18

Happytobmrsg how can i pm you. We are about to do a decking area, and i think this would be amazing and we'd use it alot more. Dh not keen. Could you pm me or show me some pictures. Sorry, hijackiing

YumyumAndyum · 01/07/2019 19:49

@VivaJen.
I got those wellies
£175
I’d have paid double that!!

And I agree with poster about private health insurance. I wonder if we got the same (county medical?) as I pay same. So good.

YumyumAndyum · 01/07/2019 19:52

@BarbequeWeather.
I’m only saying this as you haven’t actually started work yet.

I speak as someone recently out the other side of a major build

Presumably you really trust and like your builder if you’ve selected him? so trust his choice in designer as the two will work well together or he wouldn’t be recommending. And trust me - that’s important!

blueiris71 · 01/07/2019 19:53

bean to coffee machine. It was nearly ten times the cost of our Tassimo but a million times nicer. I'm excited every time I use it!
Recliner sofa. We're on our second recliner. I wouldn't get anything else now. Whats the point? So good.
A Caspar mattress.
Two dogs.

happytobemrsg · 01/07/2019 19:56

@BarbarAnna @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Not my house but mine is very similar to this. I’m in Essex so if you’re in that area I can give you the details of who did mine

What have you splurged on that has been worth every penny?
FrenchyQ · 01/07/2019 20:10

My lazyboy electric reclining suite...never thought I'd spend that kind of money on a sofa.

Dyson hairdryer
Tefal health grill
Joseph and joseph chopping boards, utensils and bowls....the quality is really good and they dishwash really well.

Dora26 · 01/07/2019 20:52

Natuzzi sofa in cream - waited a while for that!
Bialetti percolator - it travels with us...
Brabantia bin - why oh why did I wait so long
Le Creuset salt and pepper mills - at last - good quality grinders that I expect to LAST
Fly London shoes - 5 pairs last count - they are so comfortable and that little bit edgy - LOVE LOVE LOVE them
Last but most, my beloved springer spaniel - joy and love every hour of every day - priceless!

Goodgriefisitginfizzoclock · 01/07/2019 21:16

Botox- told no one but, lots of comments on how well I’m looking recently!
Nice butter- enough said
Replaced my 16 year old Meile washing machine when I finally died with new.
