What have you splurged on that has been worth every penny?

Recently bought a MacAir which is a thing of beauty and wonder. Am also gradually replacing cheap crockery with lovely Denby stuff.

I now buy good quality bras instead of M&S and more 'high end' makeup.

So I'm not talking houses, cars, horses etc. What have you bought/upgraded that you love so much more than the cheaper version and has been good value?

@Shosha1 - glad your hot tub is helping with your pain.. my DD has EDS & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (amongst other things) - I've just bought an old Babyliss bath spa thing from eBay - it turns your bath into a jacuzzi...

Actually brilliant and she gets such a lot of relief from it.

Loving this thread: lots of positivity! Best value buys for me:

2 glass beaded globe chandeliers: big, bold, beautiful, and they've completely brought my newly-decorated sitting room to life. Love them.
Brick archways in the house, which a foolish former-owner had slathered in magnolia paint, stripped back to bare brick. Messy and costly, but worth it.
Big bed with pocket-sprung mattress
Large Osprey tote bag in a bright emerald with a contrasting strap.
Dubarry boots.
My garden hammock
My book collection
My Doc Martens collection!

Most wanted:

Hot tub
Luxury coffee machine
Boob job (reduction, not expansion!)
Rainforest shower (as a direct result of this thread; thank you for the recommendation, PP!)

PS. Vitamin D tablets. Worth every penny: anyone who's ever had a major deficiency will know how debilitating and bloody painful this is.

Kelp23 · 30/06/2019 20:21

My car- ridiculously powerful vehicle for me to be tootling about in every day but I love it
Laser eye surgery

Zoejj77 · 30/06/2019 20:22

Gucci loafers - go with everything
Gucci bag, goes with the loafers and everything else.
Bought before my son was born as now I get nothing but these will last

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/06/2019 20:23

Good point re vitamin D. I have prescription pills every month, and will probably have to take them forever, but definitely worth every penny. I feel so much better.

Sorry - mine are not vitamin D, but a steroid. Worth their weight in gold.

My camper van. It was a big standard panel van, then had it converted to a full camper van. It cost a lot but was worth every penny.

Haven't RTFT but this bin - www.johnlewis.com/brabantia-touch-bin-fingerprint-proof-matt-steel-60l/p1615334 which we bought about 20 years ago and still going strong. Prior to that we had horrible plastic swing bins that always looked grubby and regularly broke. I was aghast at the price but DH bought it because I laughed at him and said how ridiculous it was to spend so much on a bin, so it was his fu to me Grin. Wilko do bin bags that fit perfectly!
And secondly this www.johnlewis.com/simplehuman-tension-shower-basket/p1697270?sku=233971872&s_kwcid=2dx92700040389574830&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3uSmx_WR4wIVD-d3Ch1NiwHHEAQYASABEgLfQvD_BwE, I was so fed up of those stick on trays that kept falling off and there was never enough room and were always a bit twee looking. We had an extension done 9 years ago and the first time I had an en suite. We had a gorgeous big shower put in and I didn't want to ruin it with an ugly shower caddy. 9 years later it hasn't budged and still looks as good as ever. I'm very much a Primark person usually so these two purchases stand out as crazy expensive for me but so worth it! (Apart from holidays, I do spend a lot on holidays and have never regretted a penny!)

Another laser eye surgery here. Best thing ever, was able to read in the waiting room afterwards while waiting for my DH. Amazing, wish I’d done it earlier. 7 years later can still see fine.
White company pillows and duvet. So cosy and comfy

yeahokright · 30/06/2019 20:34

Dyson hairdryer, dyson cordless vacuum, cloud nine rollers Grin

Asta19 · 30/06/2019 20:36

I need to stay away from this thread. After reading about high end coffee makers I ended up ordering one on Amazon Blush I really don’t need any more ideas! I also have nice high thread count sheets. I got mine from “soak and sleep” along with some gorgeous king size pillows. They are so squishy I now end up hugging them all night! (Being huge they are both big enough for my head and my arms). I also have a vispring mattress. Not cheap but I think they really are the best. Although it’s very hard to leave my bed now.

This thread got me thinking though how we have so many “luxury” choices now. When I was a kid yes some people had more money than others, maybe bigger houses and nicer cars, but day to day stuff was pretty generic without much choice. Now there are just so many things to spend money on and so many ways to feel pampered. I sometimes feel like a bit of a spoilt brat! And I am on no level a “high earner”. I guess maybe the high side of average. It just makes me wonder how they will improve on all these things and what will people be buying in 40 years time!

Earlier this year we had our house professionally deep cleaned. It was epic. We've since started having a regular clean - it's quite a big monthly expense for us but worth every penny.

user1492520381 · 30/06/2019 20:47

Love this thread, one of the most interesting on MN, have had some of the stuff mentioned, agree with some, disagree with some, splurging unaccompanied by buyer's remorse is very satisfying.

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 30/06/2019 20:53

I would love to replace viscose and polyester clothing with cotton and other good materials, as it;s better for skin and the environment.

But not enough money!

I do prefer more high end makeup (mascara, eyeshadows), and treat myself to some nice shower stuff on sales, as otherwise it;s more Boots stuff.

Asgoodasarest · 30/06/2019 20:57

Designer handbags / purses. I buy them rarely, always in the sale / airport / outlet, but have used the few I have constantly. They still look amazing, I take care of them and it’s stopped me buying throwaway cheap items I’m bored of in 5 minutes. I do make sure I go for a classic style and nothing faddy that will date.

Apple products. I like how they look and work and they just seem to last and last. My phone still looks brand new as I’m so careful.

I have less disposable income now, so I’ve revisited the pleasure of really wanting something and saving for it. Then loving it every time I see it. I shudder at how much money I’ve wasted on tat in the past. I’d rather have the best quality I can and buy less.

Great thread and @LauraRo I loved your picture.

71wheretogo · 30/06/2019 20:59

I bought a 4.5 tog siberian goosedown duvet. It was about 70 pounds, and for me that was an awful lot. But my goodness, I love it. Perfectly warm, and also perfectly cool. Just lovely.

And I have some double wear foundation.

sunshinyday12 · 30/06/2019 20:59

Posh fridge, cordless Dyson and hot water tap in our new extension. Had none of these before but the things combined seem to make things so much easier.

OhTheRoses · 30/06/2019 21:01

Made to measure orthotics for my shoes. They have eased so much pain through knees, hips and back.

AcrossthePond55 · 30/06/2019 21:02

Quality shoes and foundation garments. It's amazing what really good shoes, a proper fitting bra, and pants that don't ride up your bum can do for your day! I'll wear cheap clothes, but no more cheap scanties and shoes for me!

Makeup where a consultant works with you to find the right shades and type for your complexion.

A good set of stainless steel pots and pans. I've had mine for over 25 years and they still look brand new.

This was a few years ago, but BFF and I bought Annual Passes to Disneyland in California. We took multiple trips, really got our money's worth, and enjoyed every minute we were there. They've gotten too pricy for us now.

NameWithChange · 30/06/2019 21:17

@CauliflowerBalti Do you have a 'refer a friend' code for Eve? We could do each other a favour here 😊

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 30/06/2019 21:20

Very minor compared to most of these but:
Micro plane fine grater, brilliant for zesting and hard rinds of Parmesan
Second Circulon pans, just bought a frying pan half price £28 and 😍

shortaris1 · 30/06/2019 21:27

Good bras and matching Knicks from Bravissimo
clinique anti redness foundation
Microblading. I had nothing much left so it was £290 but I now have brows even when I'm gymming, running or on hols.
