What have you splurged on that has been worth every penny?

Recently bought a MacAir which is a thing of beauty and wonder. Am also gradually replacing cheap crockery with lovely Denby stuff.

I now buy good quality bras instead of M&S and more 'high end' makeup.

So I'm not talking houses, cars, horses etc. What have you bought/upgraded that you love so much more than the cheaper version and has been good value?

I’m poor so my mine are budget versions.
A Brazilian wax. Couldn’t give a monkeys about using the cheapest own brand razors anywhere else but ( or not bothering) but a Brazilian is a game changer for me.
Soft top car. Never knew it had so many advantages ( easy to load/ unload for a tip run, makes you tidy up, you can fit kids or dogs in the back but not great big blokes - gets me out of being a taxi service).

Good kitchen equipment which is still in good nick after over 30 yrs family use:

  • Le Creusets, some bought new over 30 years ago, other vintage designs bought second hand. The youngest are those I bought new, all heavily used, all in fantastic condition.
  • Good copper based pans - heavy use over 30 yrs, still look good
  • good kitchen knives, same story
  • durable everyday kitchen china (another Denby user for this).

All were very expensive to me at the time and bought gradually, all have saved their cost times over.

A few have disappeared with DC as they left home but my first Le Creuset started life with my DM. That pot is seeing its third generation of use!

Also high thread count sheets - last for years.

Good winter coat in a fairly classic style plus a mac of similar spec last years.

Cost per year on all the above is much less than when I was starting out buying basic versions. Not everything is worth buying "good" but for basics and daily use items it definitely is worth it when you can afford it.

People buying luxurious sheets and bedding, could you recommend where to purchase please?

OhMyDarling · 30/06/2019 19:49

The only things I have ever splurged on are when buying my dogs and dance/gym classes for dd’s.
The joy these bring to our lives is immeasurable.

However I want a robot lawn mower!!!! Had a quick look on amazon and was so disappointed to see the price- way beyond me.
Thought I’d found one for £35 and got v excited- turns out it was just the top cover.
Never mind.

Thinking positive by focusing on all of the steps and calorie usage I ‘benefit’ from with my old mower!

Eve pure linen bedsheets. I will never sleep in anything other than linen again. It's next level lovely. Counterintuitive as they feel quite rough on the hand, but they are GORGEOUSly soft to sleep in.

Heston Blumenthal/Sage bean-to-cup coffee machine. Amazing.

concernedandworried · 30/06/2019 19:54

Kitchenaid, makes perfect bread each single time. It's magic

ChilliScallops · 30/06/2019 19:54

Maui Jim sunglasses. I buy previous seasons on eBay so not full price but still worth the 100£ + price tag

RoundingError · 30/06/2019 19:54

I stalked this recycling and food waste and everything all in one bin for about a year on amazon, waiting for the price to fall. It did, and I got it, and it makes me happy every day - the design just works.

Also my Delonghi bean to cup machine - 10 years and still going strong.

Anything I’ve bought from Bravissimo (in particular the 28 back bikini in the sale several years ago when 28 backs were like hens teeth).

The diffuser that keeps my kitchen smelling of citronella and so keeps away the flies, without me spending ages fiddling around with citronella tea lights and worrying the kids will burn themselves or set something on fire.

My high thread count sheets mostly came from John Lewis sales or similar but all are plain white. If you want specific designs you might need to look wider.

I'd love a robot hoover (DH would love a robot lawnmower - but I think he actually secretly enjoys the ride on mower!). My problem is that we live in a weird MC Escher sort of house where every floor has a big ledge on the threshold and the floor levels don't match in any of the rooms! We'd have to get 5 to do our downstairs!

We recently splurged on a new car. I've been driving an enormous people carrier type car for more than 10 years and we were recently gifted a fairly sizeable amount of money. Instead of doing the sensible thing and taking it off the mortgage (although the mortgage isn't huge), we decided to get me a new car. It's only a few months old (so is like brand new to me), it's low, high tech and it's sporty and it makes me smile every time I get into it. It's not a premium brand but I got way more bang for my buck than I would have with a prestige marque and it's actually almost identical to one of them, just with a different badge!

The other thing we've been splurging on recently is toiletries - we've started buying soap and shampoo bars instead of plastic bottles. I've been using quite expensive brands to date, as I work my way through the brands to find the ones I like best. We've also been buying eco-friendly loo roll in bulk (which is quite pricey, even on subscription) from Who Gives a Crap! LOL

ChilliScallops · 30/06/2019 19:56

And yes to decent quality bras. Was brought up to believe that m&s were the best but they are so not!

PandaG · 30/06/2019 19:58

Made to measure winter boots. I am incredibly wide of calf, could not get navy boots to fit. Had some made to measure. Amazing, so comfortable to wear, worn hard for two winters and still almost like new. Can be resoled, restitched etc by the cobbler, worth every penny!

MissingInActionYouSay · 30/06/2019 19:59

For me its my 600 thread count cotton sheets. I love them, my bed always feels cool and crisp.

I also have a 13kg washing machine and two 10kg tumble driers. I can do 50+ kg of washing a day, dry it and have it put away over 5-6 hours AND it saves my washing getting covered in allergens on the line.

I have a brand new golf GT TDi and I love it. Not just a little bit of love, but massive "makes me smile every time I see it" love.

My roof garden. It is 3x3m and opens from my bedroom. It has been an expensive labour of love making it usable, but after 3 years I have wisteria, several jasmine plants and loads of bee friendly plants and flowers. I have a hammock out there and its just total and absolute bliss to read a book in the sun. total privacy too as I am not overlook as its on the 3rd floor. A few hours out there is as good as a holiday.

Supermansmum · 30/06/2019 20:00

Next teddy bear bedsheets are absolutely incredible, for winter months. Not so much for temperates like we're having atm. My cordless Dyson is brilliant, but I wish I'd gone for the higher priced one as it's even better.
Didnt want prescription sunglasses, so got reactors in my glasses-bloody love them.
A king size expensive bedframe-im single but treated myself after sleeping on a mattress for almost 2 years when ex left and took the bedframe.
Next clothing for my sons-you can really feel the quality.

raspberryk · 30/06/2019 20:00

Top to Toe laser hair removal, half price it was still close to £2500 but worth every penny!
A Windows surface pro 2 in 1 touchscreen tablet and laptop.
800 thread count sheets.
A 2.5 metre mirrored sliding door wardrobe with the premium interior fittings such as drawers and shelves etc.
Le creuset kettle and casserole dishes and never stick saucepans and frying pans.
The next one will be Disneyland Paris which seems a lot of money for 3 or 4 nights but the kids are only young once.
I get prescription sunglasses and didn't think they were really splurges as you often get them free with a normal pair and there's not really any other way you can see without them in the summer? However I do splurge on getting the lenses thinned, scratch proofed and anti glare which is usually more expensive than the glasses lol.

Queenofmyownheart · 30/06/2019 20:01

I bought a second hand lazy spa. Absolute bliss and keeps the kids happy for hours.

Prescription sunglasses 😍 absolute life saver.

I've also recently started buying more expensive shampoo & conditioner. Revelation. My hair feels amazing 😂

Toriadoria · 30/06/2019 20:01

We bought a super king size bed a few years ago and got a vispring mattress which alone cost a few thousand but worth every penny

FreedomFidgit · 30/06/2019 20:02

Private gastric sleeve - worth every bloody penny!

Elphame · 30/06/2019 20:03

Made to measure sofa and chairs. Cost an absolute fortune but after 25 years are still going strong.

Toriadoria · 30/06/2019 20:03

Oh also a all inclusive trip to the Maldives in February worth every penny Grin

Rosiesmydog · 30/06/2019 20:04

An amazing holiday in New Zealand. So good we are saving up for another one..
Oh and, reading this thread has made me decide that I NEED a CrossWave!

SquirrelShit · 30/06/2019 20:05

Permanent makeup tattoos for eyeliner and eyebrows.

Very extravagant camera lenses.

Car with lots of creature comforts including heated seats and heated steering wheel.

SquirrelShit · 30/06/2019 20:06

Ladymargarethall · 30/06/2019 20:11

Opossooom · 30/06/2019 20:13

LVL Lash lift - wow!!! and a new (for me not brand new) but v nice car!
A full set of nice bedding purchased as shown in the show room and a private plate for my car.
