Had to go wedding dress shopping alone- come and tell me what you think!

Went wedding dress shopping yesterday on a spur of the moment, it was getting to difficult to get my mum and close cousins to join as we all live in different parts of the country.

I ordered this dress from Phase eight which I think is the one, I just need a few more eyes to tell me if I'm missing anything glaringly obvious and some second opinions.

I will pay for it to be taken up when I am set on shoes. And apologies the only heels I have in the house at the moment are black boots as the rest are in storage for moving house!

I'm getting married in the scottish highlands with a party to follow in my home city. Will wear a tasteful tartan shawl outside for travelling to photos/inclement weather.

Gorgeous, angry owls and all. 🦉

nicecuppaforme · 27/06/2019 14:12

theme is Scottish

Grin I'm Scottish, I've never seen a bride with a tartan shawl.

AhhhHereItGoes · 27/06/2019 14:18

You have the right figure for the dress - it's lovely!

Not too glitzy and over the top, but still beautiful.

Don't think it's particularly low cut.

BenWillbondsPants · 27/06/2019 14:24

OP, it doesn't matter which dress you pick, not every single person will like it. I think it's beautiful and much nicer than any of the other dresses that people have posted, you look fantastic in it. More importantly, you feel fantastic in it.

And if you want a tartan shawl, get one.

TheBossOfMe · 27/06/2019 14:26

Seriously? I've seen loads of weddings with tartan shawls - almost every Scottish wedding I've been too has had the bride bundled in tartan for outdoor photos.

BenWillbondsPants · 27/06/2019 14:28

@TheBossOfMe I've only seen it once, I'm Scottish too so have been to about a million Scottish weddings, but that doesn't mean the OP shouldn't get a shawl if she wants. I think it's a lovely idea.

Cwtches123 · 27/06/2019 14:29

I'm really sorry but you did ask................

I think it draws the eye to your hips and isn't flattering.

TheBossOfMe · 27/06/2019 14:31

To be fair, the Scottish weddings I've been too have all been in slightly odd places with either no proper heating (winter) or a gazillion bitey insects (summer) - so the tartan shawls were necessity!

I think they're beautiful.

Jojoanna · 27/06/2019 14:32

I’m not keen , but if you love it go for it

ElizaPancakes · 27/06/2019 14:32

I think it’s gorgeous. I’d go for a little cape rather than shawl, but that’s a really personal choice as I never know what to do with my arms with a shawl!

origamiunicorn · 27/06/2019 14:33

That's beautiful OP, very 1920s, I love it!

happyhillock · 27/06/2019 14:40

Dress is stunning I'd try the next size look's to tight across the hips, im Scottish never seen a tartan shawl at a wedding

MissPhonic · 27/06/2019 15:08

Theme isnt scottish, just happens to be in Scotland! We're eloping with 10 guests (parents, siblings and partners) to a beautiful loch side lodge we've stayed in previously on one of our many highlands holidays. Groom is just wearing a suit. He's welsh so wouldn't wear tartan.

By shawl I think I mainly just mean bundled in a blanket- just for huddling in waiting for photos etc. I like the idea of a cape too! Just thinking of realistic weather in the highlands in May!

I got married in May in Scotland OP and it was fucking freezing! Hailstones, the lot!

PeePooAndPaperOnly · 27/06/2019 15:18

It really suits you.!

Ohyesiam · 27/06/2019 15:23

You are going to look a lot more trad bride than I will when I get married next month , so don’t question the not typical bride shop look.
It’s a great dress, really properly special, and nicer than the links people have been posting.
I thought the fur wrap someone linked was great though, but a tartan wrap for a Scottish bride is a great thing.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 27/06/2019 15:42

There look some nice ideas on that Light in the Box link posted above, sure to be something to keep off the chills.

Fair enough if the angry owls don't worry you, embrace them Smile

I think my issue is that the dress has been designed for someone straight up and down, no curves and a flat bottom as per the model
www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_54510+203857106_-1
hence the blouson waist on the dress and the fact that it is pulling a bit across your hips and mid section.

If you read all the reviews people seem to say that different dresses vary a lot even within the same sizing, so it's a question of finding the best one for you. Going up in size and having it tweaked and fitted to enhance your shape seems the best idea and having your Mum give it the once over for loose threads too as a few reviews mention that problem. As a PP said, you need to be comfortable sitting as well as standing around and you need to be comfortable after you've eaten too, so as someone else said, get great underwear. The dress needs to slip over and then sit well so you can forget about it.

Obviously the most important thing is that you feel fabulous, so it's just a question of making the overall look as good as it can possibly be.

NannyRed · 27/06/2019 15:49

The dress is beautiful. It suits your lovely hourglass figure.

Do not spoil it with a tartan shawl, (possibly a sparkly wedding dress style diamanté belt), a cream fur stole or bolero would look so much more tasteful.

When you find the correct shoes, this is a winner. It’s not difficult to hem up a wedding dress, I altered the hem on mine and 3 out if 4 bridesmaids dresses.
Enjoy your day, you look lovely.

Ifeelinclined · 27/06/2019 16:01

I love it! Congrats!

MissPhonic · 27/06/2019 16:06

Shawl idea is scrapped! Will look at lace boleros and capes and faux fur shrugs.

Monsoon do these and are usually lovely

feelingverylazytoday · 27/06/2019 18:52

It looks nice, but not stunning. Personally I would try a few more dresses on in slightly different styles. I think there might be a better dress out there for you.

ProfessorofPerspective · 27/06/2019 19:07

I got married in May in Scotland OP and it was fucking freezing! Hailstones, the lot!

We went for November by the lochside, overlooking the Paps of Jura. It was absolutely freezing but very dramatic. We went to a Jason Byrne show a few weeks before, sat in the front row and it somehow came up as he talked to the audience. He was so incredulous that anyone would choose a beach wedding in Scotland in winter that he did virtually the whole second half on it.

Have a lovely wedding OP!

Livpool · 27/06/2019 19:08

It's lovely- and fits you perfectly xx
