What do posh people drink as an aperitif?

I'm currently drinking Pimms. DH commented that it was posh. I said it's probably what riff raff like us think is posh, but really isn't.

So out of interest, what would be a posh (ahem, sorry, I mean "smart") aperitif?

I don’t like negroni, poured the last one down a sink. I’m obviously not posh!

Like gin and tonic, but not sure if it counts as odd.

Mum2jenny · 26/06/2019 21:29

Odd = posh.

AnnaNimmity · 26/06/2019 21:31

it's not posh. G&T maybe is. Champagne possibly.

I would only drink pimms at a barbecue I think. Or possibly outdoors drinks party.

(disclaimer, I only know old posh people, not young ones)

My in-laws are properly posh, and so I've had years of experience of this sort of thing ( not largely through choice, I hasten to add, I've spent hours of my life listening to elderly aristos talking about their spaniels, plumbing and adult children in Australia). In my experience, it's right that at home properly posh people drink gin and tonic out of glasses bought in a petrol station in 1982. In fact, at Rules I think that g and t is just about the only aperitif in the menu. There is Aperol Spritz or Campari and soda of course, but they are pretty vile if you ask me. Negroni tastes the same as both of them. I do like a proper cocktail in Italy or an American city. Anywhere else it just feels a bit try hard.

In France we drink supermarket cremant de Bourgogne which FIL has been stockpiling in the sauna for about 20 years. If he's also stockpiling champagne, I'm damned if I can find it!

To be honest the best lesson to learn from very posh people ( especially septuagenarian ones) is just to do the fuck you like.

At the Oxbridge college where I was an undergraduate, we were always served dry sherry before dinner (or at occasions like, e.g. choir drinks with the Dean). Everyone pulled faces about having to drink dry sherry (but guzzled it down anyway - free booze, innit Grin).

Mrsjayy · 26/06/2019 21:42

I don't know what an aparitif is Blush illtake myself off the thread Grin

Nacreous · 26/06/2019 21:45

Dry sherry or a g and t has definitely been my posh person aperitif experience.

My friend who was an old Etonian did used to feed us Pimm's, but only outside on the lawn, and not really as an evening drink.

And then whisky, Madeira or port after dinner I think.

EnidButton · 26/06/2019 21:47

Scoop of vanilla ice cream in a tia Maria and coke. Proper classy.

Stravapalava · 26/06/2019 21:48

My Ddad is very old money posh & it's always g&ts or sherry before dinner at his.

GabsAlot · 26/06/2019 21:48

i dont think drinking gin is posh its now the most common drink the uk

caffeinebuzz · 26/06/2019 21:49

Pimms isn't really an aperitif, and not especially posh. Although I do love it for a bit of daytime drinking.

Pre-dinner I'm thinking either G&T or champagne, or I know some quite posh people who Ike a Campari.

tenbob · 26/06/2019 21:50

G&T at home
Champagne at a restaurant

30not13 · 26/06/2019 21:51

Grin @ Buckie

BoudicasBoudoir · 26/06/2019 21:53

Gin absolutely is posh. Not fancy newfangled gin, though. Normal London gin, probably with lukewarm flat tonic in it, before dinner with a peanut if you’re lucky.

Pimms, as a PP has said, is not an aperitif.

DirtyBlonde · 26/06/2019 21:53

"What do posh people drink as an aperitif?"

Whatever the fuck they want

donquixotedelamancha · 26/06/2019 21:57

What do posh people drink as an aperitif?

The tears of the poor.

Fibbke · 26/06/2019 21:57

God no, no fancy gin.

Gordons and schweppes. Maybe fever tree if you want to feel a bit yoing and modern.

YesILikeItToo · 26/06/2019 22:02

Q: How many students at St Andrews university does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Two. One to mix the G&Ts and one to call the electrician.

Thunderpunt · 26/06/2019 22:02

Cream soda

thinkfast · 26/06/2019 22:05

Aperol spritz is no longer in

How about
Kir
Kir royale
Champagne
Gin and tonic
Negroni

Unescorted · 26/06/2019 22:09

It depends on the event.

Fibbke · 26/06/2019 22:15

I have been to many posh houses and events and 9 times out of 10 its g and ts or maybe champagne (NEVER PROSECCO)

nanbread · 26/06/2019 22:15

Definitely a bog standard G&T. Champagne on special occasions only. Occasionally someone will ask for a sherry. Whisky neat is also acceptable.

aweedropofsancerre · 26/06/2019 22:16

gin and tonic
champagne
bellini at a push

BlueBrush · 26/06/2019 22:17
