What do posh people drink as an aperitif?

I'm currently drinking Pimms. DH commented that it was posh. I said it's probably what riff raff like us think is posh, but really isn't.

So out of interest, what would be a posh (ahem, sorry, I mean "smart") aperitif?

A suitable alternative to gin and tonic is vodka and orange drink from an old orange squash bottle, according to Jilly Cooper.... personally I’ll stick with gin!

Iamthewombat · 26/06/2019 22:24

We are of one mind, Fenella. I was thinking, what would Jilly Cooper’s creations drink?

Answer: an ENORMOUS gin and tonic, or two fingers of whisky with MASSES OF SODA. (Not Rupert. He takes his neat).

aperitif

Pimms isn't an aperitif

Dry sherry
Dry martini
vermouth
champagne

GarlicBreadItsTheFuture · 26/06/2019 22:29

Gin and Tonic
Champagne
Fino sherry

Pimms is for garden parties/outdoor events

wowfudge · 26/06/2019 22:29

Campari and soda is my favourite aperitif.

wannabebetter · 26/06/2019 22:32

For the Aperol Spritz brigade - or even Campari & soda fans at a push, Lidl is currently selling 'Bitterol' for £6.99 which is a remarkably acceptable alternative!!

daisyboocantoo · 26/06/2019 22:33

We drink kombucha, daaaarling

Peitho · 26/06/2019 22:34

Gordon's gin (definitely none of these gauche nouveau gins) with plain old tonic. In a glass garnished with labrador hair.

AnthonyCrowley · 26/06/2019 22:35

Le perroquet

BasiliskStare · 26/06/2019 22:35

G&T before dinner - whisky / brand afterwards ( except I don't like whisky)
Pimms at Henley or during the summer

But the truth is - have whatever the hell you like Smile A small kir would always be welcome in my book

But a sherry or a brandy alexander - this may make some smile

Personally I hate gin and do not buy into its current trendiness. Pour me a whiskey please. Or a negroni if it's been a particularly challenging day.

Peitho · 26/06/2019 22:39

I do like a proper cocktail in Italy or an American city. Anywhere else it just feels a bit try hard.

Well seeing as I'm only in America or Italy on the very odd occasion I'm happy to be a bit try hard with my delicious espresso martini in a regional city Grin

GrimSisters · 26/06/2019 22:39

I'm far from posh, but I like Campari soda. DH says it tastes like dentist mouth rinse so the bottle is mine. Grin I suppose you could say I'm authentic though - used to drink it at aperitivo when I lived in Italy.

dreichuplands · 26/06/2019 23:00

Delighted to read that proper cocktails are fine in American cities.
I think the difference between winter and summer needs to accounted for.

FairNotFair · 26/06/2019 23:05

Gin and french
Or Tio Pepe

hopefulhalf · 27/06/2019 05:48

Pink gin (from the colonies).

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 27/06/2019 08:19

I went for dinner hosted by a Lord so-and-so once, the aperitif was an incredibly dry, well chilled Riesling. It was lovely Grin

Pimms for drinks outside, apart from at the Summer Exhibition when they have it at the Buyers’ and Friends’ Days. Champagne if you are having friends over for dinner.

Isn't a negroni a gin cocktail? Grin

ThorosOfMyr · 27/06/2019 09:22

Absolutely agree never ever ever Prosecco. Vile syrupy stuff anyway.

Usually champagne or a good cremant (de Loire; limoux etc).

Otherwise bog standard G&T but in a tumbler not balloon glass.

Pimms is for outdoor daytime drinking - picnics, Wimbledon, Henley regatta.

Aperol for when you're actually in Venice.

BonitaBonita · 27/06/2019 10:02

The Queen Mother drank Gin and Dubonnet so I stick to that :)

Peitho · 27/06/2019 10:24

Isn't a negroni a gin cocktail?

It is but the gin flavour is delightfully drowned out by the vermouth and Campari.

Peitho · 27/06/2019 10:26

Pink gin (from the colonies)

Oh dear. Do posh people still refer to 'the colonies'.

Vive la Revolution.
