Broadway show cancelled

Our treat to dd for studying hard for GCSEs, is a trip to New York. We got her Broadway tickets for a show she is desperate to see for Christmas.

We found out today the show has been cancelled!! We will get a refund on the tickets and will obviously still go on the trip, but I was wondering what we could do with the money in New York instead? There aren't many other shows she's interested in as most are on at the west end.

What time of year are you there?

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 07:36

We are in New York in August. We had two shows booked and both have now been cancelled.

You should book another show. Saying you’ve seen a show on Broadway is a special thing

Can’t you book another show anyway, even if it is on in the West End? I agree with a pp that seeing a show on Broadway is special!

LIZS · 21/06/2019 07:56

There is a Ticket booth in Time Square so should be able to find an alternative show.

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 07:58

I've never heard of shows being cancelled before, didn't realise it was a thing. Its made me cautious to book any more.

I wonder if they sell any tickets on the day ?

My dd is taking drama and theatre for a level and the shows were the reason for travelling that far.

Last time I was there about ten years ago, the Marriott we stayed in actually employed people to stand in the ticket returns line and we got to see Cats for about 50 dollars for two premier seats. Maybe we got lucky but it might be worth seeing what's available when you get there - in my experience there are not many bad shows on Broadway. Enjoy your trip Smile

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 08:03

Thank you, that's reassuring, hopefully we will get refunds and find something once we are there.

Has anyone done the Broadway tours?

Blimey, what will she get for studying hard for her A levels? A trip to the moon?!

MustardScreams · 21/06/2019 08:23

@MT2017 I was thinking similar! Imagine if she gets a first in her degree Shock

AJPTaylor · 21/06/2019 08:26

Go to the ticket booth and take your chance on what you will see. Great fun. Cheap. I would imagine that you will get some bargains in August. It's a different experience to seeing in the West end.

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 08:28

We haven't been on holiday in the last 5 years and no plans to go anywhere again, it was supposed to be a once in lifetime trip.

Just back from NYC. We saw My Fair Lady whilst there.

ProseccoSupernova · 21/06/2019 08:36

Just being in New York will be amazing. So much to see and do but yes see what other shows are on broadway.

Other ideas could include Coney Island, a baseball game, or see who is on at madison square garden as may be a pop act she likes on tour!

She will not be disappointed though with the usual sights... trip up the Rockefeller centre, Central Park picnic, Ellis island ferry, pizza in Brooklyn and walking back over the Brooklyn bridge.

HamptonLucy · 21/06/2019 08:37

@MT2017 and @MustardScreams - Don't be so bloody sneery. Have a great time, OP - good advice re. the ticket booth - your DD will love the experience of a Broadway show.

Yes sorry that was a bit out of order. Sorry op! Didn’t mean to be such a knob, have a lovely time.

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 08:47

Thank you for all the ideas, I know she will have a good time, and we are lucky to be going to New York.

The shows cancelled are The Prom and Be More Chill, she likes to see new up and coming musicals. Can't afford Dear Evan Hansen or Hamilton. Has anyone seen mean girls?

OP posts:
FuckPoliteness · 21/06/2019 08:53

Mean Girls was brilliant! Saw it in NYC last year. Definitely go!

HamptonLucy · 21/06/2019 08:57

@MustardScreams - Smile You're a good egg!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 21/06/2019 09:02

God yes there's so much to do, you will all have a fab time!
How about going to the TKTS booth and letting her choose tickets to something, Coney island is pretty cool as a PP suggested too, the ariel tram to roosevelt island is a bit different to do. Or foid walking tours, there's tons of those, look on Groupon to save cash on them. Have fun!

DaisyDaisydoo · 21/06/2019 09:06

I saw Beautiful on Broadway, cried with joy and sadness- best show I have ever seen by far, and I’ve seen a lot!

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 09:07

Feeling much more positive now. The tickets were a surprise, at least now we can get enjoyment from planning our trip together.

She loves the idea of spending the day in central park, which we wouldn't have had time to visit if we saw two shows.

Might book mean girls or take a chance and see what's on when we get there.

Has anyone been to Ellen's Stardust Diner?

OP posts:
DaisyDaisydoo · 21/06/2019 09:10

Yes Ellen’s is amazing!! Go for breakfast and get there 10/15 mins before it opens which won’t be hard when you are jet lagged. The queue gets very big very quickly. It is amazing though, I’m sure your daughter would love it

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 21/06/2019 09:19

Check out the schedules at Lincoln Arts Center. It may not be Broadway but it's got an amazing range of theatres there and is much more for those "in the know" and a bit less touristy so may be something she fancies going on there, often with famous faces etc. Just eat enormous burgers and steaks. I can't get enough of NY meat :) Katz Deli is meant to be great but I've not got around to it. 9/11 memorial absolutely phenomenal.
