Broadway show cancelled

Our treat to dd for studying hard for GCSEs, is a trip to New York. We got her Broadway tickets for a show she is desperate to see for Christmas.

We found out today the show has been cancelled!! We will get a refund on the tickets and will obviously still go on the trip, but I was wondering what we could do with the money in New York instead? There aren't many other shows she's interested in as most are on at the west end.

My cousin just saw Beetle Juice there and said it was fantastic, the best show she’s ever seen.

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 09:41

I'm making a list of all your suggestions so we can look at them over the weekend.

We have now been told our refund won't be done until the day we were supposed to see the shows, so pre booking any tickets is out of the equation.

I know this isn't the end of the world but when I booked the trip I pictured dd at Be More Chill in her favourite creep T-shirt. I'm gutted, but she's happy and still really looking forward to it.

Yeah Ellen's diner is great, we went at odd times, so if we'd had a big breakfast we had lunch mid afternoon and never had a problem getting a table, they do pack em in like sardines though! The food was ok, but the singing made up for it!

Avoid juniors cheesecake, we had it and it was rubbish! Ellen's special cheesecake was better, not connected to the statdust diner I don't think! And try a corned beef sandwich. It's nothing like the mashed up fatty stuff they call corned beef here, it's proper meat and very tasty.

I love NYC and always get passionate when other people are going, and a little bit jealous too!

Not what you asked but you can do a behind the scenes tour at Radio City Music Hall. The guide was fab.
The TKTS booth in Times Square does same day tickets for big shows at a discount-you have to Q from mid afternoon.
Have a great trip.

PonderingPanda · 21/06/2019 12:53

We did Ellen's diner for breakfast. Got there at 7am. They wanted us to place the order asap but we kept saying we were still looking as they hadn't started singing.

Juniors also do a good breakfast.

For a cheap and basic cafe The Red Flame diner on W 44th Street is good. Ate there a few times.

We did a horse and carriage in Central Park. Booked online.

Went up One World Observatory. Went to 9/11, walked down to Staten Island ferry and went past Statue of Liberty. Ignore the people seliing tickets unless you do want to go across to it.

Went to Grand Central Station and did the whispering wall.

PonderingPanda · 21/06/2019 12:54

Went to Nutella shop, Rockefeller center, played on the floor piano from big, went to the cinema

PonderingPanda · 21/06/2019 12:57

Went to Hudson Yards, popped in Macy's, walked past Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. Saw Flatiron building.

Went to Jersey Gardens.

Angelo's pizza was really good food too.

If like Mickey Mouse the Disney store in Times Sq have one dressed as Statue of Liberty. Can only get that in NYC

Is it Be More Chill? Ds told me it’s closing (it is very common both on Broadway & the West End I’m afraid for shows to close early). It has a cult teen following, but doesn’t overly appeal to those with Broadway ticket money. I predict it will come to the Off West End at some point somewhere. That’s really bad about the refund though. Here you would get refunded straight away.

Trying to think of something that will appeal. There is Dear Evan Hansen but obviously that’s coming to London later this year.

MummytoCSJH · 21/06/2019 13:14

Cna you get tixkets for the same show on a different day? If not, Mean Girls is amazing, we saw it in February. We went to the ticket booth in times square (big and red under the steps, you can't miss it) on the day and got tickets really cheap and close to the front. Search TKTS for all of the information. On the day the website will state what shows are available and a rough price, you queue, go to the booth and say how many and you can ask for the best seats they have or if they have any under a certain price. We saw WICKED too, that was preplanned. I know its on in other places but being able to say you've seen Wicked on Broadway is a different caliber.

MummytoCSJH · 21/06/2019 13:16

No idea why Wicked was all in caps there... Just want to echo others and add that Ellen's Stardust Diner is amazing!

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 13:20

Wow, thanks for all the ideas!

Yes Be More Chill is the show she really wanted to see.

I think we would struggle to afford Dear Evan Hansen booking this late.

Loves Disney and radio city tour sounds good. We have found a Percy Jackson walking tour and she likes the idea of the ferry :) The two days are now quickly filling up!

@nursiecat Mean Girls is brilliant!

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 13:24

Does anyone know if it would be possible to get four seats together with tkts ?

There is a booth in Times Square which sells tickets for shows at reduced prices. You have to go early on the day but can get huge discounts. You will love New York, it's amazing🗽😊

user1486131602 · 21/06/2019 13:32

Try looking out for the rockette Christmas show, it’s absolutely amazing! I went at xmas last year and was just so good and Christmassy. I cried,🙄
The other thing to do is see Santa in Macys, I went there too!!
You will be able to get loads of disco7 ted tickets nearer the time....don’t be fooled not thinking they’ll be sold out, they were offering 1/2 price tickets to the shows I went to on the day!!
Have a great time, enjoy 😉. Hope her results are good!

GeorgeTheBleeder · 21/06/2019 13:43

Won’t her Drama A’Level be more skewed towards serious drama rather than big Broadway shows?

There will be an infinite number of plays on in New York. She should try to see as many as possible!

nursiecat · 21/06/2019 13:57

I will look into plays. They have on module on musical theatre but like you say the course is more related to plays.

I know you could see it in London but Broadway does have more Kufos but Come From Away is an amazing show for someone studying theatre. Yes, it’s a musical but it’s s fantastic example of physical theatre, ensemble cast multi-rolling, on stage band who get involved in the action. 12 actors, 12 chairs that turn into all sorts.

hellhavenofury · 21/06/2019 16:40

I saw Lion King in NYC which was AMAZING!!

EachandEveryone · 21/06/2019 23:50

Oh, Sleep No More is very, very different. Based on Macbeth web.ovationtix.com/trs/resources/enableSafariCookies.jsp?reref=https%3A%2F%2Fmckittrickhotel.com%2F

heraion · 21/06/2019 23:57

Sorry but I really don’t think that seeing a show on broadway is very special at all. Sure if it’s a show you like then super, but its location on broadway in itself won’t make it great.
I went to see Matilda, and spent the whole show cringing at the awful, fake British accents.

Could you spend the money on a flight upgrade?

BritInUS1 · 22/06/2019 00:00

This is a lot of fun experiencetheride.com/

WorraLiberty · 22/06/2019 00:03

Blimey, we took our son to Nandos Grin

Bummer that it's cancelled though OP. Hope you enjoy the trip regardless Thanks

Crunched · 22/06/2019 00:06

King Kong is pretty unique and I am not sure it will ever come to the West End. Tickets are usually available at the booth in Times Square.

heraion · 22/06/2019 00:07

Also forgot to say, best of luck to dd with her results!
