Do you flash your lights or do the hand wave to say thank you when driving

Realised today as I was driving that there is a mixture of flashed lights or hands lifted above the steering wheel to say "thanks" to a driver who is being courteous -
What are you?

Hand wave. Or in dark very briefly turn lights of and on again. Better than blinding someone with a full beam flash who deserves a thank you!

ShowOfHands · 17/06/2019 20:13

Hand wave. Flashing lights are too ambiguous. You risk other drivers thinking you're giving way and can cause accidents.

*off

DramaAlpaca · 17/06/2019 20:14

Hand wave.

VittysCardigan · 17/06/2019 20:15

Hand wave

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 17/06/2019 20:16

Hand wave.

Light flash means they’re giving way or is a warning for a mobile speed camera further up the road Grin

QueenEnid · 17/06/2019 20:17

Either 😂

Incrediblysadtoo · 17/06/2019 20:17

Both. Depends on the situation

MagicKingdom · 17/06/2019 20:17

Hand wave

EskewedBeef · 17/06/2019 20:17

You get the royal wave from me.

TheSpottedZebra · 17/06/2019 20:17

Hand wave. Totally agree that flashed lights are too ambiguous. They're also disturbing to other drivers.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 17/06/2019 20:18

Hand wave in day time. Flash if very far away (i.e. feel free to pull across me, I'll give way) or it's night time.

I'm aware that you're not supposed to "give permission" for people to manoeuvre when they don't have right of way. I would never do it if it might impact anyone else e.g. let them pull out and drive in the opposite direction to me, in to someone else's lane.

MongerTruffle · 17/06/2019 20:18

Hand wave

If someone flashed their lights at me, I'd assume that they were giving way.

Sunshineonleith12 · 17/06/2019 20:20

Daylight hand wave. Nighttime flash of the lights unless it could be considered as a come hither sign (in whatever way you want to mis/interpret that)

NC4Now · 17/06/2019 20:22

Prefer a thumbs up to a wave, personally.

Pipandmum · 17/06/2019 20:23

Hand wave in day. But if theyve pulled over to let me go at night I flash them when passing and only when passing. If I flash from a distance I mean I’m giving way.

CharDee · 17/06/2019 20:31

Usually a wave and a big smile during the day and if it's dark I'll flash my lights. One driver who I used to see quite regularly, we'd take turns letting each other go, once stopped next to me before driving off, wound his window down and thanked me for always thanking him so cheerfully of a morning!

Sirzy · 17/06/2019 20:33

Wave. Unless it’s dark.

Or if a HGV has let me in at some point then I will flash my indicator to say thank you as they can’t see the wave

RobinHumphries · 17/06/2019 20:34

Devonshire lifting fingers off steering wheel whilst still keeping palm on steering wheel here, slightly friendlier than the Cornish way of lifting just the fore finger

VelvetSpoon · 17/06/2019 20:35

Hand up. Never flash my lights, people do it to me a lot and I find it dazzling.

There's an old chap near here who always gives a cheery thumbs up when I give way to him, I think the thumbs up is great!

crazycatgal · 17/06/2019 20:36

Hand wave, unless it's dark.

PomDeNlume · 17/06/2019 20:37

Bit of hazard light action and/or a wave depending on how I feel!

CaptainPovey · 17/06/2019 20:38

depends

ShesABelter · 17/06/2019 20:40

Wave during the day and do a flash at night.

Bracknellite · 17/06/2019 20:42

I’m with @ShowOfHands
Light flashing is ambiguous and, if misinterpreted, it’s you that’s in the poo after an accident.
