Do you flash your lights or do the hand wave to say thank you when driving

Realised today as I was driving that there is a mixture of flashed lights or hands lifted above the steering wheel to say "thanks" to a driver who is being courteous -
What are you?

That’s the old VW to another old VW.

Wave to say thanks if I’m facing the other driver, 1-2 on hazards if I’m in front of them. Light flashing is for letting people out at junctions.

Fuck I need to go to sleep I though the title said “Do you flash your tits.”!!!!!

Hand up. Never flash my lights, people do it to me a lot and I find it dazzling.

Me too. I really hate being blinded at night by people 'thanking' me - it's especially bad on a humpback bridge at the end of our village because of the angle of the lights if they flash as they're coming up it.Hmm

The Highway Code states:
110 - Flashing headlights. Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.^

If someone has given way to you, they know you're there so don't bloody well flash, you're breaking the Highway Code and may impair their vision.

Light flashing is for letting people out at junctions.

It absolutely is not!

Birdie6 · 18/06/2019 01:26

Hand wave. Flashing my lights would mean " there is a police speed camera ahead".

Yes - I had someone drive into my car, as I was passing stationary traffic in a left turn lane at a junction because he'd been 'flashed out' by someone in the left lane. Twerps.

So, here's the next section of Highway Code:

  • 111 Never assume that flashing headlights is a signal inviting you to proceed. Use your own judgement and proceed carefully.*

cluster you read my mind for my next thread!

I realised today whilst driving, and making a mental notes of all the various hand waves - that my favourite one is with my thumb curled around the steering wheel, with an artful raising of the four fingers (however in poorer visible conditions i do more of a hand wave)

Thanks for all those with info on light flashing - i might have to confess to perhaps having used this incorrectly at times!

Hand wave for the front, quick flash of the hazards for behind, and light flash for letting someone in or out.

Agreed - I was more thinking letting people pull out of parking spots, letting them merge into stationary traffic, giving way to oncoming traffic on streets with lots of parked cars, etc. Of course the onus is still on the other driver to check it is safe.
