Do you flash your lights or do the hand wave to say thank you when driving

Realised today as I was driving that there is a mixture of flashed lights or hands lifted above the steering wheel to say "thanks" to a driver who is being courteous -
What are you?

Hand wave. I always seem to manage to turn my fog lights on my accident if I try to flash and end up driving around with full beam on with people honking and me not knowing why.

CoraPirbright · 17/06/2019 20:47

Hand wave or a quick 1-2 with the hazards. I mean why wouldnt you?!! I HATE people who dont thank - it’s literally just lifting a couple of fingers off the steering wheel!! Such a tiny thing but makes life infinitely better for the thanker and the thankee.

small2018 · 17/06/2019 20:56

I give a thumbs up 👍

Frith2013 · 17/06/2019 21:31

Hand wave

I save the headlight flash to warn someone of a hazard ahead.

Or very occasionally to chastise someone for poor driving.

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 17/06/2019 21:41

Handwave during the day, single flash at night, three quick flashes when there’s deer titarsing about all over the road to warn oncoming traffic (live in a forest)

OhMsBeliever · 17/06/2019 21:47

Hand wave. Or at night I windscreen wiper wave (because I always fail at that exact point to remember what side the lights are on!Grin)

Mollypolly2610 · 17/06/2019 22:22

Big hand wave and if behind me a couple of hazard flashes

SudowoodoVoodoo · 17/06/2019 22:48

Hand wave.

I'm a bit rubbish at managing a brief friendly flash, and would rather not inadvertantly blast their eyeballs out.

I'm an excessive thanker. There's a lot of chicanes in the area and tend to wave even when it was my right of way as it's nice to acknowledge that you appreciate that the other driver hasn't been a cheeky chancer.

IsThisSeeSawTaken · 17/06/2019 22:50

Hand wave, huge grin, totally over the top.

Soola · 17/06/2019 22:52

A wave usually but I so like to get a laugh and will blow a kiss if it’s a couple of men! The younger the better as they seem to appreciate it more! Grin

MadCap · 17/06/2019 22:53

Hand wave unless it's dark or massive ddog is stood up in the back.

goingtotown · 17/06/2019 22:55

OhMsBeliever I thought I was the only one to do that.

wowfudge · 17/06/2019 22:56

The Highway Code says only to flash your headlights to let somebody know you are there.

Using your hazard lights to say thank you is very different from flashing your headlights, which I dislike as it can dazzle another driver, but you can only do it if you are in front of the person you are looking to thank.

LoafofSellotape · 17/06/2019 22:58

I do a kind of lifting a finger/wave thing. People in Yorkshire will know what I mean Grin

thenightsky · 17/06/2019 22:59

Hand wave and big smile.

lalafafa · 17/06/2019 22:59

I do a quick wave and flash the light briefly. If someone lets me in I do a quick hazard flash.

lalafafa · 17/06/2019 23:03

A young driver did a twinkle little star movement out of his window to indicate I needed to put my lights on. Loved it, I do it now.

freshasthebrightbluesky · 17/06/2019 23:06

I lift my fingers off the steering wheel whilst still holding it if that makes sense. If I try to flash my headlights in thanks or warning I always get it wrong and end up putting the window wipers on instead!

HasThisSoddingNameGoneToo · 17/06/2019 23:08

I quite like the briefest flash of the hazards, like lorry drivers do. But we’ll timed so it’s only one flash.

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 17/06/2019 23:13

Hand wave. I put it up to the windscreen at night so they see it. Flashing lights is "Please, go ahead. You first" to let someone out or past.

Flashing for a thank you is a bit confusing to me as it's for giving the right of way whereas a wave is thanking someone for giving way to you.

Surfingtheweb · 17/06/2019 23:38

Wave in the day & maybe a flash of my hazards. I never flash my headlights, I don't think blinding people is much of a thank you 😂

PawPawNoodle · 18/06/2019 00:24

God I do all of them, particularly favour popping the hazards on and flashing a thumbs up though. Also do a little flick of beams when someone is hazarding me a thank you to let them know they're welcome.

BrightYellowPostItNotes · 18/06/2019 00:28

You should never flash lights to say ‘thank you.’

Ditto turning your hazards on.

Hmm
SrSteveOskowski · 18/06/2019 00:50

I do a bit of both really.

God bless the man in the navy van who flashed me today to warn me that there was a speedcam up ahead Smile

Winenotttea · 18/06/2019 01:04

Hand wave, unless I’m in the old VW then it’s the thumb and pinky sign whether I’m thanking or not!
