Evaporated milk.

HollowTalk · 15/06/2019 11:54

Easy! It's Carnation tinned milk.

TSSDNCOP · 15/06/2019 11:54

Evaporated google tells me. It’s a brand.

haverhill · 15/06/2019 11:54

Ideal milk was/is a brand name for it.

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2019 11:55

I said evaporated milk though and she said "no it's just milk in a tin"

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2019 11:55

Not condensed milk then?

OP posts:
Sooverthemill · 15/06/2019 11:57

It's evaporated milk and a specific brand. It's not condensed milk

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2019 11:57

Argh thanks. I might buy both, given she specifically said no to evaporated

x2boys · 15/06/2019 11:58

I'm sure my mum used to buy this for steamed puddings?

TheInvestigator · 15/06/2019 11:59

Are you sure she knows what she wants herself? Because "milk in a tin" comes as evaporated or condensed.... does she know that?

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2019 12:01

I have no idea. Think I'll go with evap

OP posts:
RomanyQueen · 15/06/2019 12:01

evaporated milk, but I do get confused between the two and would need to check.

Cobblersandhogwash · 15/06/2019 12:01

What's the difference? Evaporated and condensed?

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2019 12:02

I think condensed is sweetened. And given she said milk in a tin unsweetened would seem best. Thanks everyone

OP posts:
haverhill · 15/06/2019 12:06

Condensed is really thick and intensely sweet.

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2019 12:07

Good point. She clearly doesn't want that

LenoVentura · 15/06/2019 12:17

Evaporated milk is highly concentrated and high protein. Condensed milk is evaporated milk with added sugar - it's what you use to make dulce de leche.

FridaKahl0 · 15/06/2019 12:21

Semi-skimmed? That's my ideal milk.

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2019 12:33

I don't actually know what dulce de elche is :) but alsi used in cakes and to make Caramel if my memories of baking with my grandpa are correct

Mmmm condensed milk

TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 15/06/2019 12:39

I once made this error when my housebound nan sent me to the corner shop for some "milk in a tin" her dementia having erased the brand name from her memory.

I took her back condensed milk and she flipped her lid. "WHAT EXACTLY AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THAT!!!!?"

I mean, I have no idea but what exactly do you do with evaporated milk??? I've not a clue. My milk is from a bottle not a tin!

To make up for it I took the tin home and bought her a few of the correct tins with my weekly shop.

She passed away a few years later and I stood and sobbed the day I found the tin of condensed milk, long-since forgotten in the back of my pantry.

Gawd rest her soul.

(every time I see either tin it brings back the chastising I got 😂)

Livedandlearned · 15/06/2019 12:40

Could she mean dried milk?

Kez200 · 15/06/2019 12:46

Do you know what she might use it for. My grandmother used evaporated as a cream substitute, over puddings. Condensed she boiled in the tin for an eternity to make caramel for banoffee pie

CadburysTastesVileNow · 15/06/2019 12:47

Evaporated milk on steamed puddings, suet puddings, crumble, tinned peaches ... staple of a sixties / seventies childhood

x2boys · 15/06/2019 12:51

Indeed Cadburys, my mum used to get syrup and jam sponges that she boiled in a tin for hours and then we would eat it with ideal milk 😁
