Help!

She seemed happy with the evaporated milk despite saying that wasn't what she wanted.
I have to say my heart sinks every time she takes me up on an offer of getting shopping as I know I'll spend ages stressing I'm getting the wrong stuff.

I saw the thread title and thought "That's easy! Evaporated milk."
I think it's an age thing. Grin

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2019 12:55

It woukd have been helpful if she'd said yes then :) never mind

I really really want pineapple upside down pudding and evap now!

cwg1 · 15/06/2019 13:26

Ideal milk is/was a brand of evaporated milk as^^

What to make with it - fruit mousse or fluff, of course Grin - basically, whisk a partly set jelly with the evap, and then put the fluff back in the fridge to set completely.

cece · 15/06/2019 13:35

I use it to make rice pudding.

Laniakea · 15/06/2019 13:38

I use it when making yogurt! The kids like it on tinned fruit too (blast from the 70s!)

Housewife2010 · 15/06/2019 13:46

I used to have evaporated milk on jelly in the 70s. I haven't had it for years.

Kez200 · 15/06/2019 13:53

Showing our ages now!

Wait till she wants rennet then come back here - we can help with all 60s/70s recipes!

No-one seems to ear blancmange any more. I used to love chocolate blancmange.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 15/06/2019 14:28

My dad and I have Evap milk on our Christmas pudding, apple crumble, jelly, and tinned fruit, the rest of the family think were odd.

LadySainsburySeal · 15/06/2019 14:31

Evaporated milk. I had to use some in coffee recently when we ran out of milk, it was delicious! 😋

Evap on pineapple upside down pud. It's like being transported back to 1981. Mmmm.

Lwmommy · 15/06/2019 14:32

I had a 'Spanish iced latte' from a coffee shop the other day. Bloody delicious, just espresso, milk and a teaspoon of condensed milk. So so so sweet. So buy a can of each, if she doesn't want the condensed milk make Spanish iced lattes!

Oblomov19 · 15/06/2019 14:35

Yum. Childhood ideal evaporated milk. On puddings, tinned peaches. Yum!

Kez200 · 15/06/2019 15:17

Jelly and blancmange for parties! My Dad always insisted on it for his birthday too!!

Mustbetimeforachange · 15/06/2019 15:23

It's very good for making yoghurt. Yum.
I used to hate it on tinned fruit, but then I don't like cream or ice cream with tinned fruit, it's the mixture of cream & juice. Urgh.
Now milk jelly made with evap. Delicious.

LenoVentura · 15/06/2019 15:28

@cwg1 I made a raspberry evap milk mousse for a supper party last weekend using exactly that method. Went down a storm, as always Wink. I add pureed rasps to it.

LenoVentura · 15/06/2019 15:29

Wonder what the average age of posters on this thread is Grin. I'm 56.

LadySainsburySeal · 15/06/2019 15:31
  1. DP is 65 and loves evap on puds, too.
Haworthia · 15/06/2019 15:33

I definitely remember having milk from a tin (in place of cream) on desserts in the 80s. Don’t know whether it was evaporated or condensed though.

Also remember having sterilised cream from a tin. It was really thick and tasted odd. I feel really old thinking back to those days, and I’m only 38 😄

What do people use condensed for, other than to boil and make caramel (which I’ve never been brave enough to do)?

emwithme · 15/06/2019 15:36

DH takes squeezy tubes of carnation milk camping with him for coffee. Saves him carrying milk and sugar and takes up minimal space.

I now have a craving for tinned fruit and evap.

legolimb · 15/06/2019 15:39

I condensed milk is lovely on a slice of white buttered bread.

51 here.

Doilooklikeatourist · 15/06/2019 15:42

Did anyone else make mousse in Domestic Science lessons ?
Half jelly , half whipped up evaporated milk ?

Stroller15 · 15/06/2019 15:44

35 going on 75. I also call evaporated milk 'Ideal milk'. Use it for steamed puddings and baked oats, so yummy. We used to steal tins of condensed milk from our mom's cupboards, make holes on either side of the tin lid and suck it all out little by little. So sickly, I cannot imagine doing that now!

Mustbetimeforachange · 15/06/2019 15:46

I used condensed milk in a "Iemon cream pie" which is a 70s recipe of lemon, cream & condensed milk whisked together and poured onto a digestive or ginger biscuit base. Delicious
