Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Huge charity boxes outside shops, the one I think I remember was a little girl with leg braces - the Spastic Society maybe?

ADrabLittleCrab · 09/06/2019 07:02

Insect splatter on windscreen - whenever I went out in the car as a kid, it was like an insect massacre on the windscreen but I can't remember the last time I saw bug splatter.
Frozen Super Mousse, that went from frozen solid to overdefrosted slop in a matter of seconds.

burninglikefire · 09/06/2019 07:07

clackers - I remember hearing they were dangerous because they could knock your eye out!

Nicknacky · 09/06/2019 07:13

A scramble for coppers when a bride was leaving the house to get married.

Concentrated frozen Orange juice that came in a little cardboard peel-away cylinder which you then diluted with water. I'd buy it now if I could, would save loads of space and I would have thought it was more environmentally friendly.

In the 70's and 80's my nan and grandad used get me & my sisters suchard nests for easter, they had the little wrapped chocolate eggs in top. Honestly, no chocolate has ever tasted better, I haven't seen them for years.

I also don't know of anyone putting an orange in their children's stockings on Christmas Eve anymore? Throughout the year, if we did something for my mum or dad, they would say 'Thanks, I'll buy you an orange for Christmas'. And sure as sure there would be an orange in there!

Was amused to see all the actors (men and women) wearing those plastic rain hoods during the ‘Making of Games of Thrones’ programme.
My DM used to complain they, although they effectively kept your hair dry, all the water used to soak down the tapes tied under the chin and drip down your front.

PrivateIsles · 09/06/2019 07:19

onefootinthegrave I always put a tangerine in, if that counts. And an apple. And a coin. Probably quite old-fashioned but I'm a bit like that!

megrichardson · 09/06/2019 07:24

Does anyone else remember those little light blue cars driven by disabled people? I guess they were specially adapted.

megrichardson · 09/06/2019 07:25

And thalidomide victims around and about.

mooncuplanding · 09/06/2019 07:26

I sort of did notice this happen but it’s weird to think I don’t have any CDs or records anymore.

I listen to everything on Spotify or podcasts now

I find it hard to remember how on earth I actually listened to music....like if you were in / having a party, were we all just constantly changing the music? Did we basically listen to the same album until it finished?

I can’t remember the last time I listened to a full album!

Silvercatowner · 09/06/2019 07:27

French skipping with elastic. I was so good at it.

DustyOwl · 09/06/2019 07:29

Not totally gone but; people reading books/newspapers on buses.

We are so lucky. We live in a village with 2 butchers, 2 greengrocers, 3 excellent bakeries. 5 years ago they tried to open a Greggs but it was shut within 6 months because people were so cross about the effect on the other bakeries.

(Or we live in a time warp.)

RedTitsMcGinty · 09/06/2019 07:33

Ashtrays, especially in people’s homes.

megrichardson · 09/06/2019 07:34

Lucky you, @DustyOwl

DustyOwl · 09/06/2019 07:36

Oh I know. Reading back, I really didn't mean that to sound so smug! We have also lost nearly all the banks and the iron mongers.

bananamonkey · 09/06/2019 07:39

Where can I get a rain hood?! Can I wear one in my late 30s 🤔

Pick and Mix with all the different wrapped sweets, since Woolworths died I have never seen them anywhere else.

sashh · 09/06/2019 07:39

Does anyone else remember those little light blue cars driven by disabled people? I guess they were specially adapted.

Yes, they were made of fibreglass and could be pushed over by a couple of teenagers. They only had one seat so if you were a parent you couldn't take your child with you.

Thankfully replaced by the Motability scheme.

And thalidomide victims around and about.

If you go to South America you can see a whole new generation of children with thalidomide damage. Thalidomide is, apparently, very good at treating leprosy. But in South America the RC church is big, so although you are prescribed contraceptives if you are a woman and you are told of the dangers to your child if you become pregnant the local priest will tell you to throw them away.

Lion bars

terriblyangryattimes · 09/06/2019 07:41

Two things spring to mind. That classic 70s (I think) picture of a large swan and a naked man and the pictures with lots of tiny pins and thread around between them to create an image. Both hung in my friends parents house.

Also 'the art of sex' book.

N2986 · 09/06/2019 07:43

Toys in cereal boxes. Secret bars (I miss those). I do have vertical blinds tho Blush
