Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Fruit Polos are still around.

I miss park wardens.

Graphista · 09/06/2019 01:02

Rain hoods and flatcaps still very much worn around here but that's probably because of our shite weather! I'm in west Scotland where it's almost permanently windy and rainy! Umbrellas and most too loose hoods are useless here!

But yes the headscarves thing because that was what my granny's wore and of course that generation are almost gone now. It's my mums generation that are conspicuous in their style choices which seems to include lots of Bob haircuts and big scarves/wraps worn around the shoulders.

"The dryers in hairdressers that people used to sit under with their rollers in, in rows." The hairdressers I go to still has these but it is an older clientele

"Sheets and blankets." Yes I kinda miss these in a nostalgic way but not really as I get in a mess even with a duvet! (It seems to bunch in the corners fuck knows how I sleep to do that!)

"Candlewick bedspreads." Yep and Witney blankets

"Nylon houseboats worn over your normal clothes to do the cleaning in." There was a whole thread on these recently

"Launderettes, green grocers and fishmongers" still got those here latter 2 very popular and cheaper than the supermarket.

"Credit card sliding machines where the receipt was a top copy and then a pink and yellow copy I think?" Due to a couple of tech outages the supermarkets have reinvested in these "just in case"

Milk floats

ZiggyB · 09/06/2019 01:15

I should have said early morning milk floats

bibbitybobbityyhat · 09/06/2019 01:15

A choice of toothpaste. Nowadays it seemscto be 95% Colgate or Sensodyne. When I were a lass you could get Colgate but also Macleans, Crest, SR, Mentadent P, Ultrabrite, Pearl Drops, Clinomin, Aquafresh. We definitely has more choice. Similar with icecream - Walls now seems to have a monopoly on all corner shops with a freezer, whatever happened to Lyons Maid with all their interesting varieties?

kaitlinktm · 09/06/2019 01:27

Spangles

jennymanara · 09/06/2019 01:29

Ice cream in cardboard, rather than a plastic tub. Much more environmentally friendly, and it has gone.

We still have a milk float! No bottles though, just the usual plastic 2ltr three times a week.

Ash39 · 09/06/2019 01:39

Writing a cheque for your supermarket weekly shop ( and fingers crossed the cheque would take three days to clear)

Wannabeyorkshirelass · 09/06/2019 01:41

Smoking seems to be massively disappearing - not gone yet but going. (Thankfully!)

Toasting forks.

Time40 · 09/06/2019 01:47

Sheets and blankets. So rare not to have a duvet now

I've got sheets and blankets - duvets are WAY too hot for me.

Theyellowsquare · 09/06/2019 01:47

The man from the Pru/Pearl collecting monthly. Repair shops that aren't for mobile phones. Bobbies on the beat. Proper snow and days of slush. Artificial flower arrangements (usually with a layer of dust). Fizzy pop in glass bottles.

Mumsymumphy · 09/06/2019 01:48

Hedgehogs. Always used to see them when I was little (40 years ago).

I saved my pocket money to buy my gran a rainhood when I was young, to keep her blue/purple rinse nice.

HerRoyalNotness · 09/06/2019 02:04

I had a candlewick bed spread that I cut as it wasn’t even, I snipped and snipped to make it so Grin

I’ve just googled and west elm and pottery barn have them Shock

jennymanara · 09/06/2019 02:09

I have just given some candlewick bedspreads to a charity shop from a dead parent. I felt quite nostalgic about them until I actually looked closely and they are horrible.

"Ice cream in cardboard, rather than a plastic tub. Much more environmentally friendly, and it has gone." Took up less space in the freezer too, especially as you could rip/cut away the cardboard that was no longer needed. Annoys me having a litre tub in the freezer for ages taking up space for a tiny amount of ice cream I'm loathe to throw out (we're not big ice cream eaters but occasionally take a craving for it)

We have milk floats and glad bottles but unfortunately the dairy that supplies their milk is bleurgh!

"Writing a cheque for your supermarket weekly shop ( and fingers crossed the cheque would take three days to clear)" yea cheques were great for budget jiggling.

"Smoking seems to be massively disappearing - not gone yet but going. (Thankfully!)"
I'm hoping it'll be gone before any potential grandchildren of mine will be old enough to be aware of this. Unfortunately it seems we'll have vaping instead (which has not yet been proven safe long term as it simply hasn't been around long enough)

"Repair shops that aren't for mobile phones" we have those - for shoes, clothes, appliances...

"Fizzy pop in glass bottles."
Them too, mainly barrs, irn bru of course but also flavours like cherryade, lime, cream soda (yum!)

I'm waiting on a very particular living room item being mentioned just so I can say "my mum still has them!" 😂

Mummaofmytribe · 09/06/2019 03:03

Daim bars

Beautiful3 · 09/06/2019 03:29

Highlighting rubber caps at the hair dressers. After 15 years of highlights, the salon told me they had thrown all these caps away because foils are more modern now! Hate foiled highlights as they don't get close to the roots like the highlighting caps.

powershowerforanhour · 09/06/2019 03:33

Glass bowls full of water with coloured glass "stones" in the bottom and floating candles had a brief moment. Parents had one, don't know where it is now.
