Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Ornamental picture frames on a stand that flip over to make sand art. Also 3d foil holographic pictures.

salsmum · 09/06/2019 03:39

People in the street drawing their curtains on the day of the neighbours funeral. Kids sitting on the curbs, homemade go carts. Orange kraft cheese spread in a jar.

The Pools man!

Credit card sliding machines where the receipt was a top copy and then a pink and yellow copy I think?

They still have those, all the card machines were down in a petrol station near me and they were using one.

Graphista - Anti-macassars?

Ounce · 09/06/2019 04:07

My parents have still got antimacassars. I bloody love that word.

Ounce · 09/06/2019 04:08

And of course you still get them on planes for all the sweaty heads.

floraloctopus · 09/06/2019 04:10

I was going to say that it wasn't 50-60 years ago that women would have their blue rinse and plastic hood because I remember them as a child. Then I realised that yes, it was 50-60 years ago Shock

Skipping ropes
Girls used to skip past my house on the way to school.

Decormad38 · 09/06/2019 05:01

We still have a milk float come to our street. I love getting milk in bottles and will hate the day he retires ( he’s 76 now).

Yellow film stuff they used to put in shop windows to stop the sun bleaching items in the window.

HalfBloodPrincess · 09/06/2019 05:14

Pot pouri

Graphista · 09/06/2019 05:20

"Graphista - Anti-macassars?" Yes! Thank you 😂

DerelictWreck · 09/06/2019 05:20

Morning Coffee biscuits

Yes! So annoying - we have a family recipe that requires them and every time it's a bitch to find a substitute!

AmeriAnn · 09/06/2019 05:23

Sawdust on the floor of the butchers.

Mumsymumphy · 09/06/2019 05:27

Ice Magic

BikeRunSki · 09/06/2019 05:34

Ice cream in cardboard is still available!

January and July sales - sales occur more regularly now, and don’t have the same wow factor as they did then

Durgasarrow · 09/06/2019 05:53

I still see lots of old men with flat caps. No plastic rainhats, though. What we used to call "Rubbers" or "galoshes' seem to be coming back with a brand new name--"Shoe covers," or sometimes 'shoe socks."

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/06/2019 06:01

Very specific shops, which sold a very narrow line of goods such as sweet shops selling pretty much just sweets and little else and green grocers ie not a corner shop. Also places like iron mongers, locksmiths etc. I do know of one locksmith shop and it must have been fitted out decades ago. Most of the latter have been swallowed up by shoe repair places with staff, who don’t have the in-depth knowledge of locking mechanisms. Locksmiths now mobile.

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/06/2019 06:03

Oh and bakeries, which just sold baked goods. Now the scant bakeries around seem to sell sandwiches and drinks etc.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/06/2019 06:11

In the past few months we have had/used ..
A travel brochure
Grove buddies... Elastic cord that goes through coat and clips onto coat
Currently designing our bar of our new house
My 6yo has a doll that 7yo is a bit jealous of
Both love their skipping ropes
I'm sure there was a few more too.

Seen many phone boxes turned into defibrillators.

My contribution is 10p/20p mix bags from the newsagent (depending how generous your parents were). Being so excited over your penny sweets .. pick n mix costs a bomb now.

sashh · 09/06/2019 06:25

Little boxes at the side of the kerb with a picture of a rabbit on them. I never worked out what they were for. Perhaps someone can enlighten me

Back when mobile phones cost a fortune and networks were limited (Orange only worked in London I think) you could get a 'rabbit phone' so you had a handset but you used something I assume like wifi to connect your phone at post offices, news agents etc.

Fish that nibble the dead skin from your feet in shopping centres.
Crocks.
Stocking flowers.
From the '70's water filled glass animals like a set of 3 swans.
From the 80's spun glass ornaments- my dad used to make them.

StealthPolarBear · 09/06/2019 06:39

"Proper snow and days of slush"
Wever had plenty of that over the last decade or so. I've had enough of snow now. My childhood had winters that were grey and cold but very little snow.

BarbaraofSevillle · 09/06/2019 06:43

Fax machines and spammy faxes. We still have one plugged in at work but it's years since we've received or sent a fax. Most places won't even give out their fax number any more or even have one. I'm now wondering if we're still paying for the line but we might be keeping it for relisilance reasons.
