Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

@necklace
I was always so impressed with those!

I haven’t had blancmange for years. Can you still buy it? Might treat DD (ahem me, she’s usually unimpressed with 80s food)!

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 20:10

@longtimelurkerhelen
You can buy those in my corner shop! The syrup one at least.

My parents still have a telephone table in their hall. It's mahogany with a striped seat and little drawer that was deep enough to hold the telephone directory, Yellow Pages and Thomson Local. The drawer is now empty, obviously.

BlueMoodComing · 10/06/2019 20:14

No17 make up at Boots. It was the younger version of No7. Original Formula toiletries - the packaging was cream and floral and they did Rose and Lavender perfume in a dark brown glass bottle, all very Victorian looking and gorgeous. Babe perfume with the bottle in the shape of writing. Tweed, Tramp, Panache, Pure Silk - all made by Lentheric what happened to them? Linco Beer shampoo in a single sachet. Miss Selfridge make up and the legendary Iron Lady lipstick and Soft Talk perfume.

@longtimelurkerhelen

If it wasn’t tipping it down, I’d go for a walk and check!

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 20:43

They probably last about 10 years, they’re so processed...

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 10/06/2019 20:50

Drinks trolleys. My Auntie Florrie used to wheel it out at parties.

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 10/06/2019 20:50

Ooh, and Icebreaker chocolate bars.

Daisychainsandglitter · 10/06/2019 20:51

Bath pearls. I used to love getting them from the body shop as a teenager during the 90s.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 10/06/2019 20:51

Frys Chocolate Creme - the one that had all different flavours .And Five Boys chocolate - when did they vanish? There was also this sort of chocolate sandwich bar effort - 2 layers of plain and one of milk in the middle and another bar that had the reverse. Can't remember what they were called

I see loads of young nuns (20s and 30s) near where I live and some visiting orders too, some in very traditional habit, some in more updated habits but always very happy looking. Not in a particularly religious part of the country either but it definitely looks like there are more young women joining religious orders. One of my friends became a Carmelite 18 months ago, in her 30s. We’ve got quite a lot of young priests in their 20s and 30s too, one even wears a long cape and a big wide brimmed hat when he’s out at Aldi doing his shopping dressed like most priests did pre Vatican 2.

Just thought of some more...putting an old Beano or Dandy annual on a skate and sitting on it going down hill. Few grazed knees and elbows but hours of fun.
I remember the tennis ball in leg of an old tight or stocking, one of my favorites. Also two balls, French skipping and Run Outs, British Bulldog, knock down ginger hahaha some of the games we played omg such fun. Now all kids want to do is sit on their bloody phones. Oh to go back in time and enjoy our childhoods all over again...I wouldn't change a thing!!

RingtheBells · 10/06/2019 20:59

For one bizarre reason I used to think that the white dog poo was done by white poodles

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/06/2019 21:00

Fun. Where did all the fucking fun go?

No one is allowed to have fun these days without the relevant risk assessments and safety equipment Grin

I loved green shield stamps. My mum used to buy stamps for everything at the post office, like for TV licence, then pay it once card was full.

Did anyone else have a pop man?
Used to come round weekly and sell big glass bottles of fizzy pop. Dandelion and burdock, cream soda (bright green and gross) and cherryade.

My mum was a pools lady for littlewoods. They did spot the ball too and we had a special rubber stamp with 100 crosses on. Twas marvelous.

I like the way your mind works Grin It's also full of sugar which is a great preservative. I think I would probably risk it.

BollocksIsTheWord · 10/06/2019 21:07

Crisp bags used to be more see through, like a transparent envelope window on the bag? My dog dug up an old cheese and onion Walkers packet in the wood with a 1996 date the other day and I was mesmorised! Grin
