It's time... Yes we fucking hate summer.

Although it hasn't got as hot as it was last year (yet) I feel like I've already had enough. I'm got hayfever, I can't go outside without insects getting in my face and I'm already feeling hot and sticky. I also want to go to bed and someone round here is having an outdoors party. Yes I'm a Scrooge, no I don't care. Roll on autumn and crisp sunny days and frost and apples and brightly coloured leaves (ahh, I feel cooler already.)

I've enjoyed this summer so far more than one I can remember actually. I've been very fortunate in that it seems to have been cooler here in comparison to where some posters on this thread live. As long as it isn't muggy I seem to be ok,the slightest hint of mugginess and I am a mess with a migraine.

RosaWaiting · 07/07/2019 21:37

There was a thread where posters were arguing that insulation would keep heat out...l didn’t post but clearly they’ve never lived in flats that have to meet EU regulations.

London is horribly muggy but I am doubly annoyed because I was out a chunk of the evening, the worst time in the flat, and left all windows open and temps haven’t improved at all. Literally no change when I got back.

Becca19962014 · 07/07/2019 23:07

Not much difference for me here.
Though I am more ill than I was last year so that'll be something to do with it.

RosaWaiting · 07/07/2019 23:48

Becca, I feel for you xx

HelenaDove · 08/07/2019 01:18

My parents have just had the new insulation put in when they had the roof done recently Their house was bloody hot enough already. I was round there on Saturday night and it was unbearable especially upstairs.

SapatSea · 08/07/2019 07:56

My friend lives in a new build house with the top EU rating for insulation. She rarely has to put the heating on in winter so her bills are under £20 a month but come April/May the house is an oven evrn with temperatures in the high teens. Last summer they actually slept in a tent in the garden as that was cooler. South East.

I read about this problem a few years back:
www.lboro.ac.uk/news-events/news/2017/march/overheating-in-uk-homes-is-a-public-health-disaster-waiting-to-happen.html

I've also read a few pieces in the press lately.

My dd has always wanted to live in a new build (we have always lived in draughty Victorian builds) and now rents a titchy 1 bed flat in a trendy block with her bf, absolutely baking, even when cool outside it feels so super insulated that I feel enclosed and unable to breathe. She is ground floor, she took me up in the lift last year in September to see the roof gardens, the top floor corridor was like an oven, the flats there have floor to ceiling windows and are larger so families with young children live in them. Can't imagine what it was like in last summer's heatwave. My dd and her bf have saved a deposit and are looking to buy a small flat and are favouring Victorian conversions.

This overheating problem in "eco" builds should have been foreseen. Why were metal shutters (Like they have on mainland Europe) not included or a least canopy shades. The eco benefits of the insulation in the winter will be undone if residents end up with energy guzzling and heat producing (to the outside) air con units.

My place was built mid 1800s and it retains heat really badly so it's not only new builds that do it. The walls are feet thick and whilst it's lovely and cool for the usual couple of days we had before recent times the temperature hasn't got below 20c even at night. It was far cooler last night outside. I cannot sleep outside unfortunately. I dread to imagine how much worse it'd be in a new build!

lololove · 08/07/2019 13:05

The humidity even when it's supposed to be "cooler" temps... Ugh!

So over being a soggy red faced mess 24/7

LoafofSellotape · 09/07/2019 22:04

Urghhh muggy as hell here, meant to be getting worse and I have an appt tomorrow evening I have to go to 🙄

Becca19962014 · 09/07/2019 22:30

Same here.

Supposed to be better here end of week.

Them fairies aren't going to trick me again!!

Becca19962014 · 09/07/2019 22:37

Today's 18c ended up feeling closer to 26c with sodding humidity!!

DappledThings · 10/07/2019 07:32

There's just been an item on Today about overheating in houses and care homes and how building regulations need to be changed to improve this.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 10/07/2019 12:20

I live in a 60s house. I'm actually happy that the patio windows do not meet current standards for insulation and let the draught and damp in. Thank Goodness! Because the walls do not 'breathe' and it's an oven in the summer. The boiler is in an upstairs cupboard near the bedroom - it's like having the heating on 24/7 as the pipes get warm and it emits heat. Nice in winter, but in summer you literally sleep naked with the doors and windows open because it's like a sauna! And its horrible cause I still need the heaviness of a duvet so sleeping downstairs instead helps.

I have these disgusting brown linoleum tiles on the floor downstairs and no carpet. Keep thinking about getting laminate or real wood but someone, thinking I would be pleased, told me wood or laminate would be 'great' because it 'gets warm' and helps conserve heat and I just thought god no! The last thing I need is more heat coming from the floor as well!!

RosaWaiting · 10/07/2019 13:07

How do I get rid of a humidity headache? Ibuprofen is doing nothing.

LoafofSellotape · 10/07/2019 13:09

Paracetamol, loads of water, damp flannel on your forehead and sit in front of a fan.

LoafofSellotape · 10/07/2019 13:09

Full sugar coke helps me too.

Becca19962014 · 10/07/2019 14:27

Stupid lying fairies.

Definitely not 19c here today.
Definitely no rain.

I'm going to complain.

if I ever find out who they work for

Going out this morning was unbearable because of the humidity. No idea what it's like now as we've sun now as well.

Did I mention lack of rain...

RosaWaiting · 10/07/2019 18:29

Thanks
I have cured it with wine
One advantage of not being much of a drinker is it takes very little to have an effect!

Becca19962014 · 10/07/2019 19:04

Still no rain...

Becca19962014 · 10/07/2019 22:49

It's raining right now!! Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!

Still boiling hot inside but hooray for a bit of rain.

Not the promised hours of rain by the fairies but at least some!!

BastilleKillers15 · 10/07/2019 22:55

Count me in! I hate the heatwave and all the bugs and creepy crawlies that get on you the minute you leave to go anywhere!
Night time isn't so bad as my bed is under the window so we get a bit of breeze, if there is any! I already can't wait for Autumn. Only upside is that I don't need ti wear a coat when I go outside

LoafofSellotape · 10/07/2019 23:20

Oh Jesus,it's like the air is treacle here! I'm trying to sleep but no chance! Fortunately when I went out earlier my destination unexpectedly had air con on full blast!!!

HelenaDove · 11/07/2019 01:00

Spent ages wandering around Superdrug today Their air con was lovely.

This insulation lark is not good for peoples health. I watched my niece eat yoghurts ice cream and choc ices last Saturday night. All because she was trying to cool down.

Its going to make people eat take in more sugar through these cold foods because they are trying to cool down. It uses up more calories to try and keep warm than it does to try and keep cool.

LoafofSellotape · 11/07/2019 10:32

Urghhh such a sticky night! Then it rained and was lovely and cool and now it's muggy as all hell again . At least it's full and the sun isn't blazing ...yet. I feel wrecked, hate mugginess.

Becca19962014 · 11/07/2019 12:49

Our rain today is more less than half hearted drizzle.
Not cooling at all.

I'd hoped it was going to belt it down and freshen things up.

No such luck.
