Can't he just have a bit of yours?

No MIL, my ravenous 3 year old (because you don't believe in snacking) can't just have a bit of my lunch. I'm very grateful that you've looked after him this morning, and then made a ham salad sandwich for us but the portion is far too small for either of us! I did offer to bring lunch with me, but no, instead you're huffing around the kitchen making another (weeny) sandwich for DS. He'll finish that then inevitably hoover up what's left of mine.
We're getting chips on the way home!

DP's aunt's idea of lunch for a teenage boy was a sandwich made with two slices of white bread and a single slice of wafer thin ham, he's still not over it. Grin

dreichuplands · 29/05/2019 17:24

I reckon it would be rude to ask for sufficient food at the house of someone you didn't know well and you were a guest.
But in the home of immediate family staying hungry seems perverse particularly if you had offered to bring food with you.
But I come from a family of feeders and a culture of feeding people.

redspider1 · 29/05/2019 18:29

I think I would have said, DS can have this and I'll eat at home later. If that did't prompt Mil to make another sandwich I'd know she was a tight cow and bear it in mind for future visits but I would never ask for more food in someone's house, not even family.

Oh for goodness sake, the grandma had the child for 3-4 hours. He isn’t going to die of starvation in that time, especially as he got chips on the way home.

“People need adequate food portions to function” FFS?! The kid was playing at grandma’s not spending the day down the coal mine.

NoSauce · 29/05/2019 19:40

In the real world people wouldn’t act like this. If you know your MIL is mean with food you wouldn’t send your kid without some snacks and you wouldn’t be all outraged because she only gave you a ham and salad sandwich because you’d know what she’s like.

It just makes a good froth thread I guess.

Likethebattle · 29/05/2019 21:47

Mil claims to have ‘a 2 an egg cup these days’ bollocks! She ate a full three course Christmas dinner and cleaned the plate like an Alsatian! Then as we were all still recovering asked for something else then ate all my Pringles (my Boxing Day pringles) Angry. She has no Idea about nutrition and lives off biscuits and ready meals but thinks a cup of tea (no sugar just a drop of milk) must be fattening as she doesn’t eat much or anything ‘bad’ 🙄

My mum has always done penis portions but no one goes hungry as the women’s portions are always huge anyway. I bet in a few years she’ll be feeding him properly as he’ll be a growing lad!

Likethebattle · 29/05/2019 21:48

Ffs phone, she claims to have ‘a stomach like an egg cup’

iknowimcoming · 29/05/2019 22:27

Slight tangent but the penis portions reminded me that when my ils were visiting at the weekend I made a cup of tea for us all and me and dh had our usual particular mugs (which we'd already used before that day) whilst I made ils in naice guest mugs (which are slightly smaller). When it was made mil went to grab the mugs and said "we'll let the men have those two then since they're bigger!" I said errr no we won't they're mine and dhs mugs thanks! Drives me batty!

Passthecake30 · 29/05/2019 23:01

Am I the only one that just goes fridge and cupboard diving round mil's house if the kids or I are hungry? Blush I ask before we eat it of course..

RabbitseatDogs · 29/05/2019 23:12

A sandwich made from 2 slices of Vogel bread is a perfectly acceptable lunch, people have completely lost sight of 'normal' portions. Vogel bread is 116 calories a slice, add in ham at 150 ish and butter etc then that's about 400 calories, plenty for a toddler and an adult. A 3 year old should (on average) eat 1,000 to 1400 calories daily, so 400 at lunch is plenty.

ilovebagpuss · 29/05/2019 23:45

I suppose this isn’t really about what’s nutritious enough or calorific enough to survive on. It’s just a rant about another persons views on generosity and hospitality that has caused hurt. Yes they survived and had chips don’t be ungrateful etc but I’m fortunate enough to have had both mum and mil that were happy to feed me and mine a sandwich yoghurt fruit crisps etc.
It’s all about being loving really and not a miser. Not wether the op is being ungrateful at her and her 3 year olds lone sandwich.
Unless someone is struggling financially it really is tight.

Singlenotsingle · 30/05/2019 08:47

It's always better to provide too much food, rather than not enough. I know when I invite ds, ddil and their two little ones to eat with us on a Sunday, I always think I've done too much food, but it always gets demolished pronto.

NaughtyLittlePassport · 30/05/2019 08:54

Rabbitseat
It's not enough for a 3 year old and a parent though is it!
Passthecake
She would not like that!

RabbitseatDogs · 30/05/2019 09:51

Each sandwich was 2 small (vogel) slices, a slice of ham and lettuce, cucumber, tomato. It was brown bread with seeds. There may have been a scraping of mayo

I apologise if I've got the wrong end of the stick but this reads as if you had a sandwich each?

sqirrelfriends · 30/05/2019 10:16

I can empathise, my MIL once served me exactly half of what she gave to DH while I was exclusively breastfeeding a hungry, feverish baby that was mostly inconsolable unless attached to my boob. When she offered DH seconds (none for me) she had the nerve to look put out when I took some from his plate.

This came after boasting she was lighter 6 weeks PP than before she was pregnant, knowing full well I still had a lot of weight to lose.

She's a lovely woman and was probably just trying to help me shift the weight but really?!Hmm

NaughtyLittlePassport · 30/05/2019 10:20

Rabbitsea. She wanted him to have some of mine. It was a single sandwich.

OP posts:
redspider1 · 30/05/2019 10:50

Penis portions? You mean giving men more than women? What's wrong with that? Men do need more calories. I'm 5ft 5 and DH is well over 6ft so if I ate what he does I would be fat.

redspider1 · 30/05/2019 10:51

Naughty why didn't you give your sandwich to your child and go without?

NaughtyLittlePassport · 30/05/2019 11:06

Redspider
Of course DS was going to have that sandwich. But who invites you for lunch and expects that a grown woman and a 3 year old share a small sandwich? Would you actually not say anything? Especially as I offered to bring lunch!

OP posts:
DoraChance · 30/05/2019 11:06

My MIL is terrible for penis portions. On our last visit I noticed I'd been bumped down the running order below 6 year old DS. He got way more than me, I couldn't believe it!

Jinglejanglefish · 30/05/2019 11:47

,redspider1

That's not really up to the person serving, especially if they're serving guests, to decide.

NaughtyLittlePassport · 30/05/2019 11:58

Dorachance
That sounds miserable, did you say anything?

OP posts:
NoSauce · 30/05/2019 12:06

If you know your son would be ravenous after a ham sandwich and would want to hoover up your sandwich that had a scraping of mayo and that MIL servers small portions ( yes I’ve picked up that you like the drama ) why didn’t you just make sure he had some snacks with him and why didn’t you eat some breakfast or take food with you? You know what she’s like.

Are you overweight? Is this her way of telling you so?

Bwekfusth · 30/05/2019 12:12

Some people are really weird about food. I once knew a girl who went to her boyfriends and had a packet of crisps, she was made to pay for them by his mother.

redspider1 · 30/05/2019 12:46

Op as I’ve said upthread, I would have given it to my DC and eaten at home . Yes she is tight/weird. I would have waited for her to realise I had no food. If she didn’t, I can still eat at home and I doubt accept a lunch invitation from her again. I’d never ask for food at someone’s house.
